Dan Scarfe’s grandfather has a hearing problem. During a family gathering last Christmas, Scarfe noticed something. His grandfather was sitting quietly by himself. The old man was unable to join the others’ conversations.
Scarfe was sad about this. “Grandpa watches TV with captions (字幕),” he thought.“Why can’t we put captions on our conversations?”
Then, Scarfe began working on that idea with his team. They spent about half a year developing XRAI. These smart glasses help users “read”spoken words.
The glasses are connected to a smartphone. There is a microphone (麦克风) on the glasses. It records audio (音频) and sends it to the phone. A piece of software (软件) turns the audio into words. These captions are then shown on the glasses.
You can wear the glasses and speak to someone face-to-face or over the phone. That person’s words will appear in white words on the glasses in real time. This allows users with hearing problems to reply quickly during the conversation.
Scarfe’s company began selling the glasses, and they soon became very popular. Many users call the invention “life-changing”. “I can keep up with my friends’ conversations better,” said one of them. “I feel more involved than ever before.”

We can already see some traditional festival decorations on the windows and doors of some houses. Paper-cut is one of them.
Traditional paper-cuts were first put on windows for decoration. This is why they are also called “window flowers”. Most paper-cuts are made of red paper because red means good luck in Chinese culture. Today, people use paper-cuts to decorate not only windows, but also mirrors, lamps and other furniture. The paper-cuts themselves can also be given as gifts.
Paper-cuts are popular because of their expressions of good wishes and hopes. During the Spring Festival, for example, many people put up paper-cuts of the Chinese character “Fu” upside down. They hope that this will bring them good luck. At wedding ceremonies, you can always see paper-cuts of the character “Xi”. It means that the new couple can enjoy double happiness together.
And paper-cuts of dolls or lotus flowers express blessing for the couple to have a baby soon.
Paper-cuts have developed into different styles in different areas of China. Paper-cuts from the northern areas usually have interesting shapes and rich patterns. In southern China, people prefer elegant paper-cuts. They focus more on the themes of flowers, fruit, birds and fish.
It is quite easy to learn how to make paper-cuts. With a piece of paper and a knife or a pair of scissors, you can try to make your own paper art. You can only make one piece at a time by using a knife. But if you use scissors to cut several pieces of paper together, you can make several paper-cuts at once. Although paper-cut is easy to start with, one needs a lot of practice and imagination to become really good at it.

In 2013, my husband Robin took a new job in Ghana. We moved from London to the African grasslands. With few people around our home, I felt bored. I turned to nature and learned about different types of local birds.
One morning in September 2018, after a bad storm, I found a baby bird on the ground outside of our home. He was shaking. The poor little thing had been left behind by his partners. Clearly, he was too young to be able to live on his own. I placed him in a cardboard box. I stayed up all night that day to study how to care for him.
The next day, I fed him some food. He jumped into my hand and then fell asleep in my palm (手掌). To him, I was Mother.
For the next 84 days, the cute little thing lived on me. Wherever I went, he would fly around me. He would make short flights from my hand to my head. I never named him because he didn’t belong to me. I had to remind myself that he needed to return to the wild.
Almost three months later, he was stronger, more confident and flying farther from me. His partners had returned to the grasslands. It was time for him to go. Before I flew back to England in November for the holiday season, Robin and I decided that he should be allowed outside to fly daily. Robin took him out to the partners three times. On the fourth day, the bird flew away with them.
When I returned, in January, I would watch out for him whenever the finches (雀科小鸟) flew past. I still cry when I think of him. I wrote our story into a book, Fledgling. That, along with the lesson that any tiny animal can make a difference, will be his legacy (遗留的影响).

Feeling shy around your new friends? Playing some icebreaking games can help you get to know each other better. Give it a try!
Describe Yourself
The first player should use one word to describe himself or herself. The first letter of this word should be the same as the first letter in his or her name. Henry, for example, can call himself “Happy Henry”. The next players should say their own name combination (组合) as well as the name combinations of all the players in front of them.
Ten Fingers
Players should hold up all ten fingers. One by one, they can say one fact about themselves. One could possibly say, for example, “I can swim.” The other players who can’t swim should then put down one finger. When a player puts down all ten fingers, he or she loses the game.
Who Am I?
Each player is randomly (随机地) given a card with someone else’s name on it. The card should be taped to the player’s forehead (额头). This way, the player can’t see whose name is written on it. This name becomes his or her new identity (身份). Players can ask others “yes or no” questions about themselves. For example, one may ask, “Do I have long hair?” Players should use the answers to guess who they are.
77. Why do people play the icebreaking games?78. What should the second player do while playing “Describe Yourself”?
79. How can we tell if a player loses the game of “Ten Fingers”?
80. Where should the card be taped when playing “Who Am I”?
