Project in Singapore The fantastic man-made “forest” is a Singapore landmark. It is made from steel and concrete(水泥) covered in local flowers and plants. At night, 18 solar-powered tree-like towers which get their energy from the sun often light up the city. The project was awarded “the World Building of the Year” and its designer said the idea was to create “a city in a garden”. Clearly, the special way of building up the forest makes a difference to lifting the public’s awareness about environment. | |
Project in Milan By decorating the buildings from top to bottom with more than 20,000 trees and plants, Italian architect Stefano Boeri said he’d wanted to make trees part of the buildings and create something that could help to reduce pollution. These buildings lie in the center of the city, Milan. Which types of trees are planted and where the trees are planted depend on the trees’ likes for sunlight. There is no doubt that this award-winning project is a great work. | Project in Medellin Medellin has won high praise for its green corridors(长廊)”. This project helps the city which used to be poor and dirty get a new look. Now the30 corridors full of trees and flowers connect green spaces such as parks and gardens in Medellin. The green corridors have reduced the temperature by two degrees and helped make the air clean Bees and birds have returned. To make the beauty of the city remain, more gardening jobs have been created. Because of this, people there live more actively. Its one of the best examples driven by government which improves the environment. |

When Scrooge woke up, it was very dark. A clock struck twelve! Scrooge suddenly remembered, “Another ghost is coming at one o’clock.” He decided to lie awake until after one o’clock.
He waited and waited until at last he heard the clock struck One.
At that moment, a light flashed in the room. And the curtains round his bed flew open.
Scrooge, sat up, and found himself face to face with a ghost.
“Are you the ghost that Marley told me about?” asked Scrooge.
“I am! Now stand up and walk with me!” said the Ghost.
When Scrooge saw the Ghost move towards the window, he was frightened. “I’m a mortal (凡人),” said Scrooge, “I’ll fall.”
The Ghost laid its hand on Scrooge’s heart and said, “You won’t fall.”
As it spoke, they passed through the wall. And they stood on a country road. There was no mist or darkness now. It was a clear, cold, winter’s day. And there was snow on the ground.
“Good Heavens!” said Scrooge, as he looked about him. “I grew up here, I was a boy here!”
They walked along the road. And Scrooge recognized every tree and every gate. Some ponies were trotting towards them with boys on their backs. All these boys were happy and shouting to each other.
“They are only shadows”, said the Ghost. “They can’t see us.”
Scrooge knew all the boys. But why was he so happy to see them?
Why was he happy when they called Merry Christmas to each other? What was Merry Christmas to Scrooge? “What good has it ever done me?” he asked himself.
“The school is not quite empty,” said the Ghost. “One child is still there.”
“I know.” said Scrooge with a tear in his eye.
They soon came into a large, red-brick building and entered an empty classroom.
At one of the desks a lonely boy was reading a book, Scrooge sat down on a bench and wept when he saw himself.
“I wish,” Scrooge muttered, after drying his eyes with his sleeve, “but it’s too late now.”
“What’s the matter?” asked the Ghost.
“Nothing.” said Scrooge.

What did people do to communicate in ancient times? Here are some very interesting answers to this question.
Alphorns(阿尔卑斯长号角) were once used to communicate in the mountains in Switzerland. They are very long and they are very heavy, too. So, alphorns are hard work to blow. Then why use them? Well, they make a loud sound which travels much further than the human voice. Herdsmen(牧民) used them to call cows in the distance for milking. At sunset, alphorns were also used to send a message down to villagers that all was well. These days, they’re mostly used as musical instruments.
The people of La Gomera, an island in Europe, have their own special way of sending messages from mountain to mountain. They use a whistled(口哨的) language called el silbo, which comes from their language Spanish. Whistling can be heard within five kilometers, which means it can be used across much greater distances than shouting. El silbo can be used for all kinds of messages, including greetings and announcements. El silbo is used a lot less than it used to be, but primary school students in La Gomera have to learn it.
Did you know it’s also possible to send messages without making a noise? This is called visual communication, and it includes the use of flags and even smoke. Long ago, soldiers along the Great Wall of China used smoke as a warning. If they noticed the enemy from their signal(信号) tower, they lit a smoky fire. When soldiers in other towers saw the smoke signal, they lit fires too. In this way, messages about the enemy’s arrival could travel as far as 800 km in just a few hours.

C.Sending messages down to villages. | D.Playing a kind of music. |

B.Because it is different from their language. |
C.Because it can be heard at a great distance. |
D.Because it is a subject for young students. |
A.By listening. | B.By whistling. | C.By shouting. | D.By watching. |

We all have those moments when bright ideas hit us, but not everyone can develop such moments into the fruits of creative thinking. While we believe creative thinking is the falling apple of Isaac Newton, one of the greatest scientists, we seldom notice that creative thinking is in fact a process (过程).
Let’s look at what happened in 1666.
Sitting in the garden, Newton watched an apple fall from a tree. He began to wonder if the same force that pulled the apple down also kept the moon circling the earth. Newton believed it did. He called it “gravity (重力)”.
This story has become one of the most popular examples of “eureka” moments. But when we cheer for the great discovery, the whole process of creative thinking shouldn’t be forgotten.
Newton studied mathematics for long to have a better understanding of the world. He always enjoyed finding new ways to solve problems. The falling apple was only the fruit of years of hard work before. It also started the train of thought that continued for the next twenty years.
Newton began to examine “gravity” carefully. He experimented (实验). Then he studied the results and used what he had learned to do new experiments. In 1687, the greatest scientific work ever written came out.
The whole process of creative thinking works the same in our life.
In school, we prepare ourselves for the right moment. Once the moment comes, we catch it and then keep on working in the years to come. It takes much to get the fruits of creative thinking, but the sweetest fruits will be ready for those who wait the longest.

Flora and her dad are moving to a new house soon. Next week, workers will turn the yard of the old house into a car park. The yard is full of beautiful flowers grown by Flora and Dad.
“My poor flowers,” Flora complains in a low voice, looking at the bright purple blooms (花朵) sadly. She sits outside, selling things she doesn’t want to take to the new house. Beside her hangs a sign that says Yard Sale. Several of her neighbours come to have a look.
Dad comes out, holding some snacks in his hands. “Here’s a snack for everyone,” he says. Flora’s dad loves sharing things.
Occasionally (偶然地), Flora digs her heels (鞋后跟) deep into the grass. Then she feels the soft earth move under her heels, and she knows what she can do.
She whispers her plan to Dad. He nods with a smile. Flora takes out some flowerpots (花盆) happily and finds a tool to dig with. Carefully she digs up the flowers with some earth and puts them into the pots.
She lines up the pots near her sign. Now she is ready to be a generous person, just like her Dad.
“How much is a pot?” asks Ana from next door.
“Zero cents!” she smiles and says, “Pick any pot you like!”
56. What will happen to the yard?57. Why does Flora feel sad at first?
58. What is written on the sign?
