At the age of 12, Romario Valentine is famous around the world. Why? Because he wrote a book named Protect Our Planet:Take Action with Romario.
Romario is a boy from Durban in South Africa. He is famous around the world for his tree planting and beach clean-up projects. He thinks people should learn to protect the environment from a young age. And a book can guide kids with information on how to protect the planet. But when he went to the library to borrow such books, he found most books about that were not easy to read, especially for children at his age. So Romario made a big plan—to write his own book. He hoped the book could help more children find a way to protect the environment.
Then it was time to carry out the plan. In the beginning, Romario decided to talk about water, animals, reuse and plastic pollution in the book. Then came the most difficult part—putting his ideas on paper, and making time to do research. Romario spent a lot of time and energy on them. But he made it after all with the help of his parents.
Finally, the book came out in September 2022. It’s popular among kids. “This book is quite fun,” says a young reader. “You can find some exciting scientific experiments (实验) and art activities. You can learn what jobs a child can do to protect the environment from it. It’s very helpful.”
Now Romario is still working to change the world. What does he plan to do next? We cannot wait to see it!

As soon as I could walk, I climbed up a hill that was nearby to see where I was. Was I on a continent or an island? Were there people? Were there wild animals? From the top of the hill, I could see that I was on an island. The sea was all around me, and I could see no other land. I saw no sign of people on the island, nor any wild animals. There were a lot of birds, but I did not know what type of birds they were. I shot a large bird, but its meat was terrible. I could not eat it.
I returned to the raft (木筏) and made a small hut with the wood I got from the ship. It was not very strong, but I was afraid of wild animals attacking me during the night. It was almost low tide again, so I swam back to the ship and brought back another raft of valuable things. I got some nails and axes and a grindstone to keep the axes sharp. I also got some iron bars, a lot of clothes, and some more guns. I found a sail and a hammock. I made a new raft and brought everything to shore. When I returned, I saw an animal like a cat sitting on one of the boxes. It was not afraid of me. I gave it some food. It ate the food and walked into the forest. I made a tent with the sail and brought everything valuable into it. Then, I made a circle around it with boxes and pieces of wood to stop animals or people from attacking me during the night.
Every day, at low tide, I went back to the ship and got more things. I had a lot of rope, and I took all the sails. I was surprised to find more food and gladly brought that back to shore as well. Once, the raft tipped (倾斜) near the shore, and everything fell into the water. However, the water was not deep there, and I managed to save most of my things. It was very hard work. On the twelfth day, I found some scissors and knives as well as some money. While I was on the ship, the wind began to blow, and I was afraid that I would not be able to get back to the shore. I did not make a raft that day but swam back with the scissors, knives, and money. I knew the money was useless, but I took it anyway.
That night, there was a storm, and when I woke in the morning the ship was gone. The storm had broken it up. I was very pleased that I had worked so hard to get what I could from it.

If you want to keep your houseplants better, you should water them properly. Here are a few steps you can take to help make watering easier.
When you plant something, leave enough room so that you can pour in some water. Importantly, never let your plants sit in water unless they like water. Some people are likely to water every plant too much or just forget them when houseplants are no longer so exciting or new. Some people don’t recognize the differences between their plants. For example, watering a sunflower isn’t the same as a rose. So search for some information to make sure what kind your plants are.
You may know top watering. Here’s a different way—bottom watering. Bottom watering is good for many plants whose leaves don’t like to get wet. When you water houseplants from the bottom up, their roots get stronger because they’re always growing directly down toward the moisture (潮湿). Use a long-necked watering can. This will allow you to offer water without wetting the leaves. When you do it correctly, this method is suitable for such kind of houseplants.
Do we need to water plants every day? It depends. Remember to water your plants at a fixed time and keep on. Mark the time on your calendar to remind yourself to check if your plant needs watering. And you’d better water in the morning. Watering at night means moisture, which may lead to illness.
