I went to England last year. I enjoyed my stay, and I noticed something interesting with the English way of life.
For example, you must say Mr or Mrs when you meet someone for the first time. When you get to know each other better or when they ask you to, you can just use their first names.
One day, we visited some friends and had afternoon tea together. Afternoon tea is not just a drink but a light meal at around 4 : 00 pm. We ate sandwiches and a large fruit cake. In England, you usually drink tea with milk. So I tried to drink tea with milk, too.
Fish and chips is traditional food in England. You can buy it and eat it in special fish and chip shops on the high street, or you can take it away and eat it with your fingers! It is delicious.
At the bus stop, you must not push your way onto the bus. You need to stand in a line and wait for your turn. Sometimes people are slow to get on a bus.
Once I noticed a gentleman touch a young man on the shoulder, smile politely (礼貌地) and say, “Excuse me! Are you waiting for this bus?”He was really polite.

Winter is here. In many Chinese cities, the weather is freezing cold. Have you put on your winter coats, gloves and qiuku?
Qiuku is a kind of long underwear—it is also called “thermal underwear” (保暖内衣). It keeps people warm in the coldest months of the year. Because of its pronunciation (发音) in Chinese, English—speaking people call it “chill cool”.
In fact, in western countries people also wear long underwear, like qiuku. They call them “long johns”. Some people think they are named after John Sullivan, a famous British boxer (拳击手). He wore clothing that looked like long underwear while boxing.
But long johns are not very popular among young people in these countries, they think they are not cool. They may think they will be fine without them, since they won’t be outside for very long.
However, doctors may advise you to forget your pride and wear qiuku in winter, or you may get arthritis (关节炎) easily.
47. Why do people put on qiuku in winter? ________A.Because they think qiuku is cool. |
B.Because they get arthritis. |

My interest in cooking started when I was 11, partly thanks to my mother. She didn’t really like cooking and when she did cook, I didn’t like her food. Once I was watching something about cooking on TV and I thought I could do this, so I went to the bookstore and looked for the biggest cookbook I could find.
During a year, I cooked most of its recipes (食谱) and was ready for a bigger challenge (挑战). I wanted to make my own dishes and I started cooking for more people than just my family. My parents allowed (允许) me to build a test kitchen. I did much cooking to test my dishes in it and my skill (技艺) improved quickly. Later, my mom and I set up a dinner club that organized monthly events inside my home. Now as a teen chef (主厨), I have also cooked in top-class restaurants around the country. I am not doing it for money, but because I love cooking.
Now I know that when you stop caring whether you’ll be famous or do well, your dream will come to you.
50. What made the writer start to cook? ________A.His parents’ wish. |
B.The information about cooking on TV. |
C.The teacher’s advice. |

Have you ever thought about what you are going to be when you grow up? Many people think we can have only one job in our life. We all know that this is not true. But quite a few people think this way. However, there are many examples where people became successful after changing their jobs later in life.
J. K. Rowling, the writer of the famous novel Harry Potter, was a school teacher before writing books. In fact, she was out of work before the first Harry Potter came out.
The famous 19th century artist Vincent Van Gogh was a painter from the beginning. He once worked as an art salesman and later become a preacher (牧师). It was only ten years before he died that he decided to become an artist.
Jobs are always open to change, the most important thing is to find what you are really good at or what you really want to do. Once you find the interest, it’s all a matter of how hard you work.
53. What do many people think of jobs? (不超过15个词)54. What was J. K. Rowling before she began writing books? (不超过5 个词)
