Emily St. Denny is fifteen years old. She was born in Beijing, China, where her mother worked as a French teacher and her father taught English. When she was five years old, Emily and her family moved to Belgrade, Serbia. When she was seven years old, they moved to Nairobi, Kenya, where her little sister was born. Two years later, her family moved to Hong Kong, where she attended a French international school. After five years, the family moved to France.

Emily's mother was born in France. Emily's father is American. Emily says her little sister is very French, like her mother. However, after living in so many places, Emily does not really know who she is. She says she feels more American than anything else, as English is her first language, but she has never lived there! Emily is a "Third Culture Kid".

This term (shortened to "TCK") was made up in the 1960s by doctors Ruth and John Useem. They used it to talk about the experience of mainly immigrant(移民)children growing up between two cultures: their culture of "origin"(or that of their parents), and the place they are presently living.

Today, TCK also refers to children who have travelled a lot and who are "culturally blended". These are children who are familiar with many cultures, but not as familiar with their parents'.

Portia gave the decision. “One pound of the merchant’s (商人) flesh (肉) is yours. It is what the contract (合同) says. You may take his flesh!”

Shylock held his knife and told Antonio to get ready. “Wait!” shouted Portia. “You will not do anything that is not written in the contract. Is that right, Shylock?”

“Yes, that’s right,” said Shylock. He wondered what the wise young judge (法官) was going to say. “Well,” said the young judge, “I have read the contract carefully, and it does not say anything about taking his blood (血). It says ‘a pound of flesh’. You can take your pound of flesh, but you may not take one drop of his blood. If you take any of his blood, the duke (公爵) will take everything you own!”

Now it was Graziano’s turn to bless the judge and call him wise (智者).

“You wanted justice (公平),” Portia told Shylock, “and you will have more justice than you wanted.”

Shylock didn’t want to give everything he owned to the duke. He decided not to take his pound of flesh. He said he would take the money.

“Give me ninety thousand dollars,” he said, “and I will have pity on Antonio and let him go.”

Bassanio was happy to give him the money. He was very pleased that his friend Antonio would not die.

“Wait!” Portia said again. “He does not want the money. It is not written in the contract.”

Shylock said he just wanted to have his money back and wouldn’t even need interest (利息). Bassanio was ready to give it to him, but again Portia stopped him.

“He said he wanted only the thing written in the contract.”

Shylock understood that he would not get his pound of flesh. He understood that he would not get his money. He decided to go home.

“Wait!” said Portia, for the third time. The law of Venice, says that if you plan to kill a citizen (公民) of Venice, you will lose everything that you own. Half of what you have will belong to the person you tried to kill, and the other half will belong to the duke.

When you think about a Hawaiian holiday, you may think about relaxing on the beach with a drink in your hand and the sun on your body. Hawaii is certainly a perfect place for a lazy holiday, but there is much more than just sunshine and beaches.

Molokai (莫洛凯岛)

If you go on holiday to experience local culture and history, then there is no place better than the island of Molokai. Take a tour of the Halawa Valley, where the earliest Hawaiians are thought to have built one of the island’s first villages, and find out what Hawaii might have looked like hundreds of years ago.

Kauai (考艾岛)

Do you prefer your holiday to be more exciting? The island of Kauai is home to the Napali Coast State Wilderness Park, state park full of beautiful views and nature trails (小路). Why not try a hike along the sea on the 18-kilometer trail? Or book a place at the Hanakoa campsite so you can rest under the stars.

The Island of Hawaii       

Hawaii’s biggest cities are on the island of Oahu, but Oahu isn’t the state’s largest island. That would be the Island of Hawaii, also called the “Big Island”. And if you dream about leaving the city behind and spending all of your time with the local wildlife, this may be the place for you! Here you can swim with manta rays (魔鬼鱼) and snorkel (用通气管潜泳) with green sea turtles (海龟), and maybe you’ll see a dolphin or a humpback whale (驼背鲸) by the Kona Coast.

▲Public Libraries

Most towns in Britain have a public library. A library usually has a large selection of books and other resources (资源), which library members can use and borrow without paying.

The first Britain’s public library opened in Manchester in 1852. Its first librarian was a man called Edward Edwards. Edwards attended the library’s opening ceremony (仪式) and two famous writers called Charles Dickens and William Thackeray were there, too.

Modern public libraries have something for everyone. Most of them have audio books, CDs, newspapers and DVDs as well as books to borrow. To join a library, go to your local library and fill in a form. You’ll receive a library card which is needed when using library services.

▲Mobile Libraries

Thanks to mobile libraries, some people live far away from cities and those who have an illness can still borrow books. The libraries are special. Unlike most libraries, which store (存储) books in buildings, mobile libraries usually keep their books in a mini-bus. The back of the mini-bus has shelves for the books, and it is big enough for borrowers to step inside and look around. A driver takes the mini-bus to a certain place at a certain time, so people know when to expect (期待) it and they can give their books back to mobile libraries and borrow some more.

Do you believe a school library can be as small as a bus? A school in London didn’t have space for a library inside the building. However, everybody agreed that it was still important to have a school library. So, the head of the school, Graham Blake, decided to park an old bus on the school playground and change it into a library. Students helped to paint the bus, and after eight months, the new library was ready.
