Music can be a great power to change people’s lives. Regina del Carmen Sanchez, 14, always believes this. The girl from Kansas City, US, leads a hard life. She lives in a small house with her mom and grandparents. Her mom gets a very low pay.
But it doesn’t stop Sanchez’s love of music. She wrote her first song Keep Your Head Up when she was 12. It described the bad situation at her home, but it also sent the message of hope: “My house is old and poor, but it beats (胜过) being homeless… Love yourself and never give up. You’ll see a better life if you keep your head up…”
It took Sanchez several months to finish the song. Sometimes during a break in class, when lyrics (歌词) came into her head, “I would have to write them down right then,” she told the local newspaper The Kansas City Star.
Jeremy Lillie was a spokesman for Bright Futures, a charity fund. When he saw the video of the song, he was moved. He shared it through social media (社交媒体). The fund has provided money for poor students in Kansas City.
Now Sanchez often plays the song in public. “I want to help people understand what is happening in the world in an easy way,” she said.

Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there’s too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are very good.
Preview — if it’s long and hard. Previewing is very useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and science reports.
Here is how to preview.
●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Previewing doesn’t give you all the details. It tells you not to spend time on things you don’t really want or need to read.
Skim — if it’s short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading, like popular magazines or the sports of your daily paper.
Here’s how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.
●Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but perhaps we’ll get the same idea of what it’s all about.
38. What does the underlined word “preview” mean in Chinese?
A.精读B.默读C.朗读D.略读
39. What should we do when we read a science report?
A.Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
B.Spend a lot of time reading the details.
C.Read the first and the last sentences of each paragraph.
D.Pick up only a few key words in each line.
40. What should we NOT do when we read the news about sports events in a daily paper according to the passage?
A.Get our eyes to move fast.
B.Read the last two paragraphs carefully.
C.Sweep our eyes across each line.
D.Pick up only a few key words in each line.
41. What is the best title for this passage?
A.Why we should readB.What to read
C.When to readD.How to read faster

阅读下列短文,根据短文中的信息完成文后表格。在答题卡标有题号的横线上,写出空缺处所填单词的正确形式。(每空一词)

What do we really mean by being open? Being open is a kind of invitation to others to come in, to speak and to share. It is important in letting others get to know how we think and feel. In this way we will be understood and accepted by others. If we aren’t open with others, we won’t fully believe in ourselves or others.

Here are a few ways for you to be more open. First, make your outside behavior the same with your inside feelings and thoughts. Second, share how you really feel about something instead of just opinions. Third, try to change your questions into statements(陈述句) and talk in the first person so that people will understand you more easily. For example, you might say, “I feel happy that you’re here,” instead of, “Are you glad that you’re here?” Finally, try not to say, “I don’t know.” This usually means I don’t want to think about it anymore.

Remember also that it is not suitable to be open with everyone in every situation. You may want to be more open with close friends, but not with people you don’t know well, because you are not sure how someone else will use what they know about you. Besides, some people may not be used to too much openness. If we say everything we feel or think to them, they will feel very uncomfortable at times.

In all, being open is a good way for us to get on well with other people, but we’d better keep the balance between being open and not being too open.
