Societies and Clubs
There are rich after-school activities at Oxford. Students may join different clubs and societies according to their own interests. The Oxford University Scientific Society aims to bring together undergraduates to discuss scientific matters. The Oxford Union Society is famous for its debate. The Newman Society has been as a model for religious society throughout the English-speaking world. In addition, there are a great many clubs, including Oxford University Cricket Club, Oxford University Chess Club, and so on.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was a French writer and pilot who used his life experiences to write his publications. The Little Prince is one of his most famous books, selling about 140 million copies worldwide, which makes it one of the best-selling and most translated books ever published. Born in Lyon, France in 1900, Saint-Exupéry’s family was filled with fame. His father was a manager of an insurance company who died when Saint-Exupéry was very young.
In 1915, Saint-Exupéry joined a high school in Switzerland. Due to his poor performance in class, Saint-Exupéry didn’t graduate from the boarding school in 1917. Saint-Exupéry twice tried to apply to the French Navy Cadet School. However, both times he failed the entry test. Finally, he went to a local college to study architecture. Again, due to poor grades, he didn’t complete his study.
In 1921, Saint-Exupéry decided to join the French army as a soldier. He trained as a pilot and made his first solo (单独的) fight in July of that year. The next year, after he got his license, he was asked to work for the air force. However, his wife and her family believed that joining the air force means risking life and limb. In that case, they were against his staying in the military. Finally, Saint-Exupéry gave in to them and left the military. Later he took an office job in Paris.
As he had difficulty setting on a career path, Saint-Exupéry began to fly as a pilot again in 1926. It turned out that he was a successful pilot and made great contributions to his country during World War II. Saint-Exupéry’s last flight was on 31 July, 1944. He left on a wartime mission over occupied France, from which he was never seen again.
Saint-Exupéry was honored by the French in France and the French region of Quebec, Canada. His portraits appeared on the 50-franc notes and 100-franc coins before the introduction of the euro in France. In Lyon, his birthplace, the city’s international airport was named after him.

In Flanders, a small town in Belgium, lived a little boy called Nello. His parents died when he was two. Then he lived with his grandpa in a small house. Life was harder for them.
Every morning, Nello’s grandpa collected fresh milk from one house to another. He then put the milk onto a cart and sent it to the city. Growing up a little older, Nello tried to help his grandpa travel from Flanders to the city.
One day, as Nello and his grandpa were going home from the city, they saw a large dog lying on the side of the road.
“What happened?” asked Nello. “Is the dog dead?” His grandpa examined the body of the dog and said to Nello, “The dog is seriously ill. We have to take him to a vet (兽医), or he will die. ” With the words, his grandpa put the dog on the cart and the two went home. In fact, the dog was abandoned (抛弃) because of his serious illness. Seeing the dying dog, Nello was heart-broken. He took good care of the dog. Nello and his grandpa did not have enough to eat, but he still fed the dog with milk and bread. Day by day, the dog could stand on his feet and became stronger.
“Let’s name him Patrasche,” said Nello one day to his grandpa. “Good idea,” replied his grandpa. From then on, Patrasche became a member of the family.
One day, as Nello and his grandpa were ready to start their journey to the city, Patrasche stood in front of the cart.
“Out of the way, Patrasche,” said Nello. “We’ll be late. ” But Patrasche refused to move. He was simply staring at Grandpa and wagging (摇摆) his tail. “What does he want to do?” asked Nello.
His grandpa smiled and said, “I believe our Patrasche wants to help pull the cart. ” Hearing Grandpa’s words, Patrasche was wagging his tail even harder.
Patrasche had been badly treated all his life. Never had anyone treated him nicely as Nello and his grandpa. Patrasche was thankful for the kindness he received, so he wanted to help, Grandpa tied a stripe on Patrasche, and he started to pull the cart right away.
From then on, people in town would see such a scene: a large dog was pulling a cart with milk with the grandpa pushing behind and Nello helping at the side.

Sending astronauts to Mars is a big challenge. Astronauts will have to ate everything they need, including food, air and water. The room inside the spaceship is too limited to hold many things. So packing a spaceship is a huge challenge for a trip to Mars.
Six astronauts on an eight-month tip to Mars will need at least 18,000 kilograms of water for drinking and washing. They’ll also need water to protect themselves from space rays which can pass right through spaceship walls and harm astronauts’ living cells. But a layer of water placed around the ship can stop the harm.
That’s a lot of water. And sending water into space is too expensive. It costs $33,000 to send one cup of water to Mars. The more you take, the more it costs. We have the technology to get to Mars, but the problem is that it’s too expensive.
But Flynn, an engineer at NASA, thinks he has a way of solving the problem. Instead of building a heavy spaceship and packing it full of stuff (物料), why not use the stuff as part of the spaceship?
Imagine a spaceship that blows up like a balloon. Inside, the walls have pockets like a big honeycomb (蜂巢). These hold lots of plastic bags filled with water, dried food and algae. All these make hard walls and great radiation (辐射) protection. And stopping radiation does not influence the food or water itself — it is safe to eat and drink. And what if the same water could be reused again and again? Flynn and his team call their packed-pocket idea Water Walls.
Making oxygen and taking away CO2—the waste gas you breathe out—is another problem in space. “Water Walls will take away CO2 the same way it’s done here on our Earth—with living plants,” Flynn says. Living plants make in CO2 to make their food, and give off oxygen. “Plants are hard to grow in a spacecraft, so we use algae,” he says.
Algae are tiny plants that live in water. The algae will live in bags in the walls too, fed by human waste and sunlight, eating up CO2 and making oxygen for the astronauts to breathe.
Flynn thinks his onboard recycling system has many advantages. He hopes it will help make flying to Mars a reality very soon.

When we talk about history, some big events or historic characters may pop into our minds.
The drama opens with the story of a young man called Shuai Jiamo helping measure (测量) the land for a farming family, but only to find the result is different from what’s recorded on the official papers.
Following Shuai and his friends’ fight to solve the problem, this drama presents us what life was like for ordinary people at the bottom.
History, in fact, is a collection of stories of people. Though some people were brought to the spotlight (聚光灯) for different reasons, it never becomes an excuse to forget about the “little” people.
A.After all, history is made by everyone, big or small! |
B.That’s also what many history dramas are showing us. |
C.This drama is based on a book by Ma Boyong with the same name. |
