Many great projects in the world were completed by Chinese. Now let’s take a look at some of them.

Jacob lived at the foot of the mountains. There was a thick forest, and the boy loved it very much. He knew the birds and other animals there very well.

One day, while he was playing in the forest, Jacob found an eaglet (幼鹰) with a broken wing. It fell off a tall tree. Jacob picked it up and then took it home. He cleaned its wing with warm water. Then he carefully put the medicine on the wing. And he made a bed for the little bird to lie on.

Jacob fed the eaglet with fresh milk every day. As the bird got stronger, it started to follow Jacob everywhere. Jacob knew he couldn’t keep it for long. It was time to set the eaglet free.

Early one morning, Jacob took the eaglet high up a hill. He then let it go. The bird flew into the sky happily. But soon, it seemed to remember something. It flew down again and followed Jacob all day. It was getting dark. Jacob had to do something. He ran to a nearby cave so that it couldn’t find him.

The eaglet flew round and round for a long while, looking for Jacob. As it grew darker, the bird finally flew away. Jacob watched it fly further and further, feeling happy.

When you go to the park, you might notice many older people listening to audiobooks (有声书) instead of reading paper books. Audiobooks become quite popular these days.

Reading needs us to pay all our attention to the words in a book. However, you can listen to audiobooks anytime and anywhere you like, and it lets your eyes have a rest, too. But the big question is—Do we get knowledge from audiobooks as effectively as we do from paper books?

Researchers did an experiment to find the answer. Volunteers in Group One listen to an audiobook, but volunteers in Group Two read a paper book. It turned out that they remembered the same amount of information in these two ways.

Another study published in the Journal of Neuroscience further agrees to the result above. In the study, researchers scanned (扫描) people’s brains when they listened to and read books. The result showed that listening to audiobooks uses almost the same parts of the brain as reading does.

However, some people still believe that they learn better from reading paper books. One reason might be that when we listen to audiobooks, we are often doing other things at the same time. “If you’re trying to learn when doing two things, you’re not going to learn well,” Daniel Willingham, a professor of psychology (心理学) at the University of Virginia, told The New York Times.

She is a great Chinese woman. She has spent almost all her life in Dunhuang, studying and protecting the 1,600-year-old Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟). People call her the “ Daughter of Dunhuang”. Her name is Fan Jinshi.

Born in 1938, Fan grew up in Shanghai. After graduating from the Department of History, Peking University in 1963, she came to Dunhuang. In 1998, she became head of the Dunhuang Academy (研究院).

When Fan first came to Dunhuang, it was a poor village and life there was really hard. Although she missed life in Shanghai, she stayed. She and some workers put doors on the caves, planted trees and controlled the number of visitors. “The longer I’ve stayed here, the deeper my love has grown for Dunhuang.” Fan said.

Fan started many projects to protect the Mogao Grottoes. One of them is “Digital Dunhuang”. It gives people a new way to see the caves without destroying (破坏) them. Under Fan’s leadership, Dunhuang Academy becomes known as the world’s largest place for Dunhuang studies.

“In my whole life, I’ve only done one thing: protect and promote (提升) the world cultural heritage of the Mogao Caves,” she told People’s Daily. “My heart belongs to Dunhuang.”
