Outdoor activities are good ways to exercise and relax. Here are introductions to some fun activities. Whether you know these games or not, it is a good chance to learn more about them.
Conker (七叶树果实) fighting Conker fighting is great fun between two players. First, you need to collect a conker and get rid of its shell. Then make a small hole all the way through your conker and put a piece of string through the hole. The general idea is that one of the conker players holds his conker still in the air. The other conker player swings his conker to hit the opponent’s (对手的) conker. The aim is to smash (击碎) your opponent’s conker off the string. |

When a new headmaster came to work at Garden School, he learned the worst class in this school was Class 3A. The students in Class 3A had no interest in their lessons. So he decided to do something about Class 3A. On the second day, he walked to 3A’s classroom. He didn’t need to know where it was. He could hear them. They were making terrible noises. He stood outside the classroom for a few minutes and looked inside through the window. He became angry at what he saw. Some boys were fighting. Others were throwing things at one another. No one was doing any work.
The headmaster knew what to do. He would go into the classroom, catch the biggest boy in the class and punish him. This would be an example for the others. He took a deep breath and opened the classroom door. “Silence!” he shouted at the top of his voice.
This time the students stopped what they were doing and looked at him. Quickly he walked up to the oldest-looking boy in the room, who was also the noisiest and had been shouting at others at the top of his voice. He took him by the ear and pulled him to the front of the class. “I’m going to punish you as an example for others,” he said. “Now go to my office and wait for me.”Then he turned to the class and lectured them about how they should behave in school.

Do you know anyone born in the Year of the Tiger? What’s their personality like? Are they brave, strong and tenacious (坚韧的)? If so, then they are a typical “tiger”.
In Chinese culture, tigers are considered the king of all animals. They stand for power, energy and protection. Tigers are regarded as fearless animals, so that’s why in China you can see pictures of tigers on the walls of houses to keep away danger.
Tigers have an important cultural meaning not just in China, but across Asia. As they mostly live in Asia, for many people in the West, they have become a cultural symbol of Eastern countries and regions. For example, strong economies in the East—Singapore, South Korea, China’s Hong Kong and Taiwan—were called “The Four Asian Tigers”. In the book Life of Pi, Canadian writer Yann Martel chooses a Bengal tiger as the partner for the Indian boy Pion his adventure in the Pacific Ocean.
In the West, ▲ . A famous phrase is “eye of the tiger”, which means power and strength. In English, if you want someone to calm down, you can say to them, “Easy, tiger.”
Tigers are also one of my favourite animals. I first learned about the beauty of tigers as a child, while watching animal programs. If you ask my mom, she’ll tell you that my favourite toy was my toy tiger, which I have treasured dearly to this day. As an animal lover, I feel so sad that they are in danger and I want to help protect them.
Just as tigers serve as a symbol of protection in Chinese culture, we hope that in the Year of the Tiger more people can learn about tigers and help protect them.

We usually think that plants are quiet in the natural world. Grass doesn’t cry when you cut it; flowers don’t scream when they’re picked. But our human view of the world misses quite a lot. Plants talk to each other all the time.
Over the years, scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, release compounds (复合物) into the air to help neighboring plants.
“Recently, a team led by Junji Takabayashi of Japan’s Kyoto University has offered some explanations,” reported Time magazine.
To start out, they grew potato plants in two plastic boxes connected by a tube (管子). One plant had been bitten by insects,
They found that when insects bite leaves, the plant doesn’t sit quietly. It releases a chemical called BOVC into the air. These chemicals carry a smell that neighboring plants can sense.
“It is surprising that plants don’t release a chemical until they get a warning message from their infested neighbours,” scientists said, “These findings may help farmers with the control of insects which do harm to their plants.”
