文章大意:本文主要介绍了一些有趣的户外活动。

Outdoor activities are good ways to exercise and relax. Here are introductions to some fun activities. Whether you know these games or not, it is a good chance to learn more about them.

Conker (七叶树果实) fighting

Conker fighting is great fun between two players. First, you need to collect a conker and get rid of its shell. Then make a small hole all the way through your conker and put a piece of string through the hole. The general idea is that one of the conker players holds his conker still in the air. The other conker player swings his conker to hit the opponent’s (对手的) conker. The aim is to smash (击碎) your opponent’s conker off the string.

Go-kart racing

Do you have a competitive spirit and a natural need for speed? If yes, then go-kart racing is just the sport for you! You can go racing around go-kart circuits (环路) which include many bends, curves (曲线) and straights. Go-karting is one of the sports regulated (规定) by the FIA allowing go-kart racing for anyone from the age of 8 onward.

Skateboarding

Skateboarding is not only a cool sport to show off your skills and styles, but also a great form of transportation. Skateboards have been around since the 1960s when surfers tried surfing on land. As it developed, more and more tricks and even specific terms were invented, such as the fakie (riding backward) and air (when your skateboard leaves the ground). 文章大意:本文主要讲述老虎在东西方文化中的象征以及作者呼吁人们保护老虎。

Do you know anyone born in the Year of the Tiger? What’s their personality like? Are they brave, strong and tenacious (坚韧的)? If so, then they are a typical “tiger”.

In Chinese culture, tigers are considered the king of all animals. They stand for power, energy and protection. Tigers are regarded as fearless animals, so that’s why in China you can see pictures of tigers on the walls of houses to keep away danger.

Tigers have an important cultural meaning not just in China, but across Asia. As they mostly live in Asia, for many people in the West, they have become a cultural symbol of Eastern countries and regions. For example, strong economies in the East—Singapore, South Korea, China’s Hong Kong and Taiwan—were called “The Four Asian Tigers”. In the book Life of Pi, Canadian writer Yann Martel chooses a Bengal tiger as the partner for the Indian boy Pion his adventure in the Pacific Ocean.

In the West, . A famous phrase is “eye of the tiger”, which means power and strength. In English, if you want someone to calm down, you can say to them, “Easy, tiger.”

Tigers are also one of my favourite animals. I first learned about the beauty of tigers as a child, while watching animal programs. If you ask my mom, she’ll tell you that my favourite toy was my toy tiger, which I have treasured dearly to this day. As an animal lover, I feel so sad that they are in danger and I want to help protect them.

Just as tigers serve as a symbol of protection in Chinese culture, we hope that in the Year of the Tiger more people can learn about tigers and help protect them.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了植物之间的谈话。

We usually think that plants are quiet in the natural world. Grass doesn’t cry when you cut it; flowers don’t scream when they’re picked. But our human view of the world misses quite a lot. Plants talk to each other all the time.     16

Over the years, scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, release compounds (复合物) into the air to help neighboring plants.     17

“Recently, a team led by Junji Takabayashi of Japan’s Kyoto University has offered some explanations,” reported Time magazine.

To start out, they grew potato plants in two plastic boxes connected by a tube (管子). One plant had been bitten by insects,     18

They found that when insects bite leaves, the plant doesn’t sit quietly. It releases a chemical called BOVC into the air. These chemicals carry a smell that neighboring plants can sense.     19     They begin to make more BOVCs to protect themselves.

20     The plants were able to kill nearly 50 percent of the invaders (入侵者), much more than their sick neighbors.

“It is surprising that plants don’t release a chemical until they get a warning message from their infested neighbours,” scientists said, “These findings may help farmers with the control of insects which do harm to their plants.”

根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使短文意思通顺、内容完整。
A.Their language in chemical.
B.while the other plan t wasn’t bitten.
C.This way, the neighboring plants understand the danger.
D.Later, the same scientists place insects on the plants that hadn’t been bitten.
E.But how plants receive and set on many of these signals is still unknown.
