Since September, many schools have increased the number of PE classes from three times a week to five or even more. This is in response to China’s new standard (标准) on PE classes. The standard asks schools to make sure that 10 to 11 percent of all class time must be PE classes, third only to Chinese and math.

Along with easy exercise like running and the long jump, the standard also asks schools to give students other popular sports to do.

Ma Jiajun, from Jilin, set a new world record for “the most consecutive jump rope triple unders (连续三摇跳绳)” with 701 times. His teacher said that the school has always kept an eye on PE. With Ma as a role model now, students are more hard-working on not only jump rope but also other kinds of sports.
