Xuan Paper is one of the Four Treasures of Study. Chinese Xuan Paper has a history over 1,000 years. ① first, it, the, appeared, in, Dynasty, Tang. Its quality (质量) was so fine and soft,      ② painters liked to use it all the time. The traditional skill of making the paper by hand has been passed down by people. Even today, it is still widely used in painting.

It’s said that Jing County, Anhui, which was called Xuanzhou in ancient time, produces the best Chinese Xuan Paper. The materials to make it are usually bamboo, qingtan (青檀), rice straw (稻草) and so on. That is the reason why Xuan Paper is known for its pleasant smell of plants.

Since the Tang and Song Dynasties, people have found the paintings on Xuan Paper look more lively than on other kinds of paper. ③And no matter how many years have gone by, paintings are kept well.     

However, making Xuan Paper is not an easy job. It can’t be made by machines but by hand. Besides, it needs 18 steps to make a perfect piece of Xuan Paper. So it usually takes about one year to make a piece of complete Xuan Paper. The skill of paper making was listed as a world intangible culture (非物质文化遗产) by UNESCO in 2009.
