The Chinese pingfeng, a folding screen, is an old invention (发明) and traditional Chinese furniture. Its earliest common use dates from the Han Dynasty. The pingfeng means protection from wind, showing its purpose at the very beginning.

As time passes, it has been made into different sizes with colourful paintings. On screens usually appears (出现) a dragon. It stands for nobility and power. The peacock, a beautiful bird, can be seen on screens, too. It’s a symbol of everlasting (永久的) life. Beautiful flowers mean good luck. Lots of people like to choose them as a popular design of the pingfeng. All the designs carry people’s beautiful wishes.

Behind the pingfeng lies an interesting story. In the past, the unmarried daughter of a rich family couldn’t be seen by men except her father, brothers or very close cousins. When an admirer (仰慕者) paid a visit, however, she might take a secret look at him from a screen behind. Her father would discuss poems with the young man and ask him to create (创造) one. If the daughter and her father were glad with the young man’s poem and his looks, she might agree to marry him.       

Today the pingfeng is back in fashion for its beauty and its practical (实际的) use as furniture. Acting as a moving wall, it can be the perfect match for modern sofas and walls, and it adds style to them.

The Beijing Library in Beijing’s Tongzhou District opened to the public on December 27th, 2023. It offers people a modern and relaxing space to enjoy reading.

The Beijing Library covers an area of 75,000 square meters. It is the world’s largest and most intelligent (智能的) library, with a first-of-its-kind 21,809-square-metre open reading space. It won the Guinness World Record for the largest library hall and the largest outdoor reading space for children. The library is called “the forest of knowledge” because of the shape of its roof.

There are about eight million books in the library. It provides people with a relaxing space for reading and learning about the culture of Beijing. There are over seven million books in the underground intelligent stacks (书库). Robots can take the books to the reading area within 15 minutes. With the assistance of robots, people can easily get the book they want without having to search for it themselves.

Ms. Cheng lives in Tongzhou District. “I can’t wait to take my child to the library and I am happy that there is a good outdoor space for children in the library. For children, reading in such a beautiful library is really interesting. It’s a perfect place for life-long learning.” she said.

To welcome the readers, the library held a number of immersive (沉浸式的) activities on the opening day, including a concert, a traditional dress-up experience, and the creation of artistic works. The library will hold more than 1,000 activities in the future. Also, it’ll give new born babies some gifts to encourage life-long learning, including a reader’s card, a book, and a reading list.
