Tom can, and his mum’s very happy with him. Tom is like any other teenager. He goes to school, does his homework, meets his friends and enjoys doing sports. But between 5:30 and 6:30 from Monday to Friday, Tom does something different. He cooks dinner for all the family: his mum, dad, younger brother Joe and older sister Emma.
Tom’s mum says, “I think it’s important for teenagers to learn how to cook. Maths and English are important, of course, but they need other skills too to help them to survive. First I taught Tom how to cook easy meals like pizza or egg and chips. Then he started using recipes (食谱) in my cooking books. Yesterday he made vegetable soup. It was very good!”
Tom says, “I love cooking and I think I’m really good at it. None of my friends cook. I don’t know why. It isn’t difficult and it’s great fun!”

It was the coldest winter ever. Many animals died because of the cold weather. The porcupines (豪猪) faced the problem as well. But these clever porcupines had an idea. They decided to huddle (蜷缩) together to stay warm. It seemed like a good idea to make it through the cold winter. But there was a problem—their pointy quills (尖尖的刺) started hurting their closest friends!
After some time, the porcupines couldn’t stand it any longer. They decided to leave some room around themselves. However, as they moved away from each other, the cold air came in, and some of them started to get ill and die.
Now they faced a difficult choice—either put up with the quills or face death. After careful thinking, the porcupines decided to go back to huddle together. They found out that living with pain from their close friends was a small price to pay for the warmth of being together.
And so, the porcupines learned an important lesson: Sometimes, a little discomfort in relationships is not a big problem if it means staying warm and living through the cold. From that day on, they happily stuck together, quills and all, living a warm and long life.

“How hard could this be?” I thought before I took part in this year’s Hot Pepper Eating Contest at the Hot and Spicy Festival (麻辣节). “I have won the contest two times before. I can win for a third time!”
Each year, the contest happens three times on a spring weekend in Beijing. On Friday night, there were teams of two people each: one man and one woman. If one person on a team gives up, then both would lose. Knowing this, I invited my friend Jennifer to be my teammate because she had won last year’s contest.
In this contest, peppers each round are spicier (更辣) than the last. The first several rounds were nothing, just like chewing on vegetables. But then things got difficult. The last round really got to me. When I got to the Yunnan Devil Pepper (魔鬼椒), it felt like a huge ball of fire swimming in my mouth.
Jennifer saw how much trouble I was in, so she encouraged me, “Don’t give up, Patrick! You can make it!”
These words really helped me. We finished all of our peppers and the other team left finally quit. Then, we won!
My stomach later, however, was not so lucky. But that’s a story for another time.
