The cowboy has become the hero of many movies. He is,even today, believed to have courage and adventure(冒险). But what was the life of a cowboy really like?
The cowboy's job is clear from the word "cowboy”. A cowboy, according to dictionary explanation,is a man who rides a horse and whose job is to care for cattle(牛). The cattle were in the West and in Texas. People in the cities of the East wanted beef from these cattle. Trains could take the cattle east. But first the cattle had to get to the trains. Part of the cowboy's job was to take the cattle hundreds of miles to the railroad towns.
These trips were called cattle drives. A cattle drive usually took several months. Cowboys rode for sixteen hours a day. Because they rode so much, each cowboy brought along about eight horses. A cowboy changed horses several times each day.
The cowboys had to make sure that the cattle arrived safely. Before starting on a drive, the cowboys branded(给……烙上印)the cattle. They burned a mark on the cattle to show who they belonged to. But these marks didn't stop rustlers(盗窃牲口的人),or cattle thieves. Cowboys had to protect the cattle from rustlers. Rustlers made the already dangerous trip even more dangerous.
Even though their work was very difficult and dangerous, cowboys did not earn much money. They were paid badly. But cowboys liked their way of life. They lived in a wild and open country. They lived a life full of adventure and freedom.

【知识点】 文化差异
In our culture, the ability to make one's own decisions is important. John F. Kennedy's quote(引语)"Too often we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought." shows an unpleasant truth.
Much of what we know and believe has been taught to us by others, and we often accept this information without spending much time thinking it over for ourselves.
In today's world, we are being presented with information, ideas and beliefs, but many of them are against each other. Psychology(心理学)tells us that if we hear an idea enough times, or心t comes from someone we respect(尊敬), we will probably believe that idea. In these cases, we base our opinions on the opinions of others. If each of us does not think about this information for ourselves and come to our own conclusions , we will become nothing more than parrots(鹦鹉) quoting the opinions of others.
Examples of spreading fake news without thought can be seen on the Internet. Some people believe whatever they read and then share the story without thinking about the facts. All it takes is one quick click(点击)of the "share" button, and the story travels on its way to influence even more unthinking readers. This can cause serious problems.
If we just stop for a moment to think about what we read and hear, and form our own opinions, we will be more thoughtful, more independent, and more creative people, but few take that time. Yet we need not lose heart over this bad habit. In fact, simply becoming aware (意识到) of it is the first step towards correcting it. Once we become aware that we tend(趋向)to hold opinions and beliefs without thinking them through, we can change that pattern of behavior. Hopefully, we can learn to experience and enjoy the "discomfort of thought" and form our own opinions.
38. What's the purpose of this passage?A.To describe how Internet news spreads. |
B.To explain why people don't have their own opinions. |
C.To tell people that they should have their own thoughts. |
D.To warn people not to believe other people's ideas. |
A.untrue |

B.By learning more about psychology. |
C.By quoting others' opinions like parrots. |

If I were to ask you to close your eyes and I gave you a piece of apple to eat, would you be able to tell me what it is just by tasting it?Of course, you could. Your tongue(舌头)helps you know what different foods taste like. Do you know that foods would taste different if you did not have a nose?
What You Need
☆a friend to help
☆small pieces of any food like carrot,orange,banana-whatever you have
☆small pieces of apples,raw(uncooked)potato and(if you are brave)onion(洋葱)
What You Do
There are actually three different experiments. You and your friend should take turns trying them on each other.
Experiment1:
Have your friend close her eyes and open her mouth. Give her a piece of the food and ask her to taste it. Then, ask her what she thinks it is. She will probably guess correctly.
Experiment2:
While your friend has her eyes closed, give her a piece of raw potato. At the same time, hold a piece of apple right under her nose. Ask her to eat the potato and tell you what she thinks it is. She will say it is a piece of apple! You can even do it the other way around, and she will think she is eating a potato, or, perhaps, she won't be able to name what she is eating.
Experiment 3:(for the brave)
Take a piece of raw onion. You don't have to close your eyes this time. Press your nose closed with yourother hand so that no smells can get into your nose. Now eat a small piece of the onion. Surprise! As long as you hold your nose, you will not be able to taste the onion.
The Science Secret
You already know the science secret. Your nose and your tongue work together to make food taste the way it does. Your tongue, however, can taste only certain flavors like salty, bitter, sour, and sweet. All of the other"tastes"are actually "smells", and you need your nose to taste them.
Oh, you might use this science secret the next time you are forced to eat something you don't like the taste of. If you hold your nose while you eat it, you won't"taste"it at all.
42. According to this article, what could a person know about food?A.People hold their noses to eat onions. |
B.If you close your eyes, food will taste better. |
C.People need a sense of smell to taste some food. |
D.If you can smell potatoes, you will taste apples. |
A.You have to eat a raw onion. |
B.You keep your eyes open. |
C.You have to hold your nose. |
D.You do the experiment alone. |
A.Knowledge comes from personal experience. |
B.Team work helps us to find out science secrets. |
C.We should have courage while doing experiments. |
D.We can't draw a conclusion simply from the feeling. |
A.Why different foods can smell the same. |
B.How smell influences the way food tastes. |
C.Why some things smell better than others. |
D.How smell changes the way we see things. |

Claude Monet's paintings were quite different from the art styles that were popular in the 1870s France. Traditional artists always did their artwork in a studio and their paintings were realistic-they looked exactly like the real world. Claude Monet was part of a group of painters who were called Impressionists(印象派画家). Their paintings were light and a bit fuzzy-they gave an impression of what the real world looked like. Sometimes Impressionists worked outside, which was a very unusual thought in their time. Impressionism received its name from an early painting by Claude Monet titled impression, Sunrise.
Knowing that trains were interesting subjects and represented modern progress, Claude Monet crated a series of Impressionist paintings of trains from January to March of 1877. He worked on his paintings right on the train platform at the Gare Saint-Lazare, the train station on Saint Lazare Street. Although there were many train stations in Paris, this was the first train station built in Paris so it had historical significance(意义).
Monet’s friend, Impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir, told the following story to his sons about Claude Monet and painting the trains. Monet needed permission(允许)to spend time on the train platform and paint what he saw in his impressionistic style. One day Monet dressed himself in his very best suit along with a fine top hat, a good linen shirt and a silk tie. He appeared to be a wealthy gentleman while he really was a poor painter.
When he went towards the clerk at the train office, he presented his calling card which introduced him as Claude Monet, Painter. He asked to see the station master. The clerk quickly allowed this fine gentleman to enter the station master's office. The station master was also impressed and gave Monet permission to paint on the train platform. The station master even kept trains from leaving on time so Monet could complete a scene even though passengers complained.
Was it all worthwhile(值得)? Monet’s train scenes turned his career into a success and for the station master, made his train station famous until even now.
