Polar bears are the largest meat-eating animals on land, and they are the largest of all bears. They live in the cold Arctic. They are powerful swimmers who hunt seals (海豹) in the water. Polar bears can run 40 kilometers per hour.
Polar bears live in the icy Arctic areas of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia. They spend much of their time swimming in the cold seas.
Polar bears are up to 10 feet long and weigh about 1,700 pounds. Polar bears have small heads, powerful jaws and black noses. They have a strong sense of smell. They have 42 teeth and the tail is small and flat. They have wide front paws. There are small webs on their toes that help them swim. These bears swim with their front feet and steer (掌舵)with the hind feet.
Polar bears have two types of fur. They have thick, woolly fur close to the skin. Their fur keeps them warm. They also have hollow guard hairs. These hairs keep them from getting wet. Their white-looking coats camouflage (伪装)them well in the snow and ice. Under the fur, polar bears have black skin. They also have a thick layer of fat under the skin that helps keep them warm.
Polar bears are meat-eaters. They often hunt for food in the water, often many miles from land. They eat mostly seals. A polar bear's stomach can hold up to 150 pounds. Polar bears don't drink water.

One day, many years ago, when I was working as a psychologist (心理学家)in England, David was brought into my office. His face was pale and he stared at his feet.
David had lost his father when he was two years old and had lived with his mother and grandfather ever since. But the year before he turned 13, his grandfather died and his mother was killed in a car accident. His teacher told me that he refused to talk to others from then on.
How could I help him?
David didn’t say a word. As he was about to leave, I put my hand on his shoulder. “Come back next week if you like,” I said.
He came, and I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that we played chess every Wednesday afternoon-in complete silence . Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why didn’t he ever look at me?
“ Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,” I thought.
Months later, when 1 was staring at his head, he suddenly looked up at me. “It’s your turn,” he said After that day, David started talking. He finally got friends in school and he even joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times. Now he has really started to live his life.
Maybe I gave David something. But I learned a lot from him. I learned how time makes it possible to overcome (克服)what seems to be so painful. David showed me how one—without a. word—can reach out to another person. All it takes is a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch and an ear that listens.

Albert Einstein is considered as one of the greatest minds of the twentieth century. Even as a small boy Einstein was thoughtful. It was said that he was a slow talker and he did not start talking until he was three years old. The boy was encouraged by his uncle, an engineer, and by a medical student who ate dinner once a week at the Einstein's home.
Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, in Germany. Though he attended school as a young boy, his real studies were done at home with books on maths, physics and philosophy. By the age of 12 he had taught himself geometry (几何学).A teacher advised Einstein to leave school, since he destroyed the other students* respect for the teacher. When he was 15, he had to leave school in mid-term to join his parents, who had moved to Italy.
At the age of 16 he failed the exam to enter a school, where he would have been trained as an electrical engineer. At that time, Einstein developed a plan. He decided to enter a school to study maths and physics so that he could become a teacher. In 1900 he graduated as a teacher of maths and physics. His teachers did not think very highly of him, so he had difficulty in finding a job in a university. In 1901 he took a job as a high school teacher and married Mileva Martisch. One year later, Einstein became a teacher at the University of Bern. In 1905 Ein-stein wrote a paper on what is now known as the Special Theory of Relativity (《狭义相对论》).He won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 for his work on the photoelectric effect (光电反应).
