On the first day of the school, our teacher made us know somebody. Looking out, we found an old woman_____at the door. She came in and said, “Hi, my name is Susan. I am seventy years old”. He hunted （狩猎） lions in Africa, and rode a camel in the Sahara Desert. He says the most beautiful place he has traveled to is Kathmandu in Nepal.

Jack has married twice. His first wife died when she was 32. He met his second wife Maria while he was cycling round France. They have been married for 50 years, and they have lived happily in a small village since they got married.

Jack says that he has never been ill in his life. The secret of good health, according to my grandfather, is exercise. He goes swimming every morning. He has done this since he was a boy. He also has a glass of wine every night！Perhaps that is his secret！

Experts say that students usually need eight to ten hours' sleep at night, but most Chinese students do not get enough sleep. Some Chinese parents are usually glad to see their children study late. They will think their children work very hard. But not all parents are happy about this. Once a mother told us that every morning her 10-year-old boy put up one finger with his eyes still closed, begging for one more minute to sleep. Like thousands of students " early birds " in China, he has to get up before six every morning.

A report shows that without a good night's sleep, students seem to be weaker than they should be. Many students have fallen asleep during class at one time or another. Too much homework is not the only reason why students stay up late. Some watch TV or play the computer games late into the night.

Experts have said that students should develop good study habits. So some clever students never study late, they are able to work well in class.

There are many important rules which can keep us safe in our daily life.

In a fire

Escaping (逃) from a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family. For example, you can use stairways(楼梯), roofs and fire escapes, but no lifts. From the lower floors of buildings, to escape through windows is possible. The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. It is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building. Windows are also useful while you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed, before opening the window. Otherwise（否则）, smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low next to the window to be sure you get fresh air.

In earthquakes

Here are some tips on how to stay safe in earthquakes. Get under a desk or table, or stand in a corner or under a doorway. Cover your head and neck with your arms. Stay in your seat if in a cinema or a theater. Get below the level of the back of the sea and cover your head and neck with your arms. Try to stay away from kitchens, where there are often many objects that might fall or get hurt.

Traffic rules

It is necessary for all to keep the traffic rules in mind and obey（遵守） them strictly. When one crosses the street, he should take the crosswalk. Keep riding on the right side of the road. When the red light is on, please stop and wait until the green light is on. It is important to let the children know that playing on the road is very dangerous. Helping the aged and children cross the road is always a kind deed. If everyone obeys the traffic rules, it will be much safer to walk or ride on the road.

A group of swans（天鹅）flew down to a beach where a crow（公鸡） was jumping around. The crow watched them with disdain(鄙视).

“You have no flying skills at all!” He said to the swans, “All you can do is to move your wings. Can you turn over in the air? No, that’s beyond you. Let’s have a flying competition. I’ll show you what real flying is!”

One of the swans, a strong young male, accepted the challenge. The crow flew up and began to show his skills. He flew in circles, performed other flying tricks, and then came down and looked proudly at the swan.

Now it was the swan’s turn. He flew up, and began flying over the sea. The crow flew after him, making all kinds of comments about his flying. They flew on and on till they couldn’t see the land and there was nothing but water on all sides. The crow was making fewer and fewer comments. He was now so exhausted that he found it hard to stay in the air, and had to struggle(努力)to keep himself from falling into the water.

The swan pretended not to notice, and said, “Why do you keep touching the water，brother？

Is that another trick?”

“No,” said the crow. He knew he had lost the competition, “I’m in trouble because of my pride! If you don’t help me, I’ll lose my life…”

The swan took pity on him, and took him on his shoulders and flew back to the beach.

Confidence（自信）is very important in daily life.It can help you to develop a healthy attitude （态度）.A study shows that the people who are more confident are much happier.They can have more chances to make themselves successful.But how to be more confident?Here are some suggestions:

Speak loudly

When you are not confident，you can't do well what you want to do.You speak in a voice so low that other people can harlly hear you.Tty to speak loud enough so that people can understand you clearly.The high voice can help you become more confident.

Play sports

Playing sports makes you tired but completely relaxed. When you do sports，you will be full of confidence.

Encourage yourself

Write down a list of things you did during the day and see how many things you have done well. Did you finish your homework? Did you tell a joke that made everyone laugh? Give yourself praise for the good things you've done.

Get rid of（消除）fear

Fear comes along with failure（失败）.But it's easy to get over（克服）if you know that failure is part of your life. Don't hide your head just because you said something stupid last time. And don’t be afraid of failure, which is the mother of success. Try to start again and believe you can do better.

Pick up what you like to do

If you like singing，sing as much as you can. In some ways，a hobby can make you excellent. And it will make you happy and confident.
