In Britain, children go to school from Monday to Friday. School usually starts nine o’clock in the morning and finishes at about three o’clock in the afternoon. Most schools ask their students to wear a school uniform.

School always starts with registration(签到). What is registration? Every child going to school each morning and afternoon is recorded(记录) in a special book. The teacher reads out each child’s name in turn. On hearing his/her name, the child makes a reply(回复) and the teacher writes in the book. From the book, you can see whether(是否) the child is in school or not.

At 9:10, children go to the meeting place. There they sing songs, listen to a story and pray(祈祷).

The first lesson begins at 9:20. They have break time from 10:20 to 10:35. During break time, the children have a snack and play games outdoors. After that, they go back in for another lesson until lunch at 12:00. Afternoon lessons begin at 1:10 and end at 3:15, and children go home. They don’t have a break in the afternoon.

England

When it’s your birthday, your friends give you the “bumps”. They lift you in the air by your hands and feet and raise you up and down to the floor; one for each year you lived, then another one or two for luck.

Denmark

A flag is flown(飘扬) outside a window to show that someone who lives in that house is having a birthday. Parents place the presents around the child’s bed while he/she is sleeping, so he/she will see gifts at once upon when waking up.

Holland

Special year birthdays such as 5,10,15,20,21 are called “crown” years. The birthday child receives an especially large gift on a crown year birthday. The family also decorates(装饰) the birthday child’s chair at the dining room table with flowers, balloons and so on.

Canada

The birthday child’s nose is greased（涂抹）with butter for good luck. The greased nose makes the child too slippery for bad luck to catch him/her. In some parts of Canada, the birthday person even receives a punch（一拳）for each year he/she is alive and then one for good luck.

Brazil

The birthday child receives a pull on the ear for each year he/she has been alive. The birthday person also gives the first piece of cake to his/her most special friend or relative, usually mom or dad.

South Africa

On the twenty-first birthday, a key made of anything from paper to silver to gold is presented （呈现）by the parents as a sign that the child is ready to unlock the door to their future.

It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.

Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life getting education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and mathematics need not be taught in detail (详细地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all take an interest in the world.

I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.

Mind your meals

Try to eat more foods that grow naturally (自然地) on trees and plants. Have meals on time every day. And remember not to go to school or work without breakfast, for it is more important than lunch or dinner.

Exercise and smile

Each day take a 40-minute walk. Make time to practice some other exercise, such as yoga and Tai ji. They give us daily energy for our busy lives. Try to smile and make at least three people smile each day.

Forget and forgive(原谅)

Problems appear(出现) sometimes and they only stay for a short time. Forget what happened(发生) in the past. Don’t always think of your terrible past. Life is not very long, so we shouldn’t waste(浪费) time hating anyone. Forgive everyone for everything.
