Mrs. Andrews had a young cat, and it was the cat's first winter. One evening it was outside when it began to snow heavily. Mrs. Andrews looked everywhere and shouted its name, but she didn't find it, so she telephoned the police and said, "I have lost a small black cat. Has anybody found one?"

"No, madam," said the policeman at the other end. "But cats are really very strong animals. They sometimes live for days in the snow, and when it melts or someone finds them, they are quite all right."

Mrs. Andrews felt happier when she heard this. "And," she said, "my cat is very clever."

The policeman was getting very tired. "Well then," he said, "why don't you put your telephone down? Perhaps she is trying to telephone you now."

In America, when people say "man's best friend", they don't mean another person. Instead, they are talking about a lovely animal: a dog! These words show the friendship between people and animals. Dogs and other pets can give joy to people's lives. Some people think of their pets as their children. A few even leave all their money to their pets when they die!

Animals can help people, too. Dogs can be taught to be the "eyes" for a blind person or "ears" for a deaf person. Scientists have found that pets help people live longer! They make people happier, too. Because of that, animals are brought into hospitals for "patients".

Americans hold "Be Kind to Animals Week" the first week of May. Pet shows are held during the week. Even if you don't live in America, you, too, can do this. How? First, think about how animals make your life richer. If you have a pet, take more time this week to play with it. Remember to give it delicious food.

If you don't have a pet, be kind to animals around you. For example, if you see a street dog, don't kick it or throw things at it. Instead, just leave it alone, or better yet, make friends with it. If others around you do bad things to an animal, try to speak up. As people, we must protect animals who can't speak for themselves.

Last month we bought a little dog for our four-old daughter. There are not many children of her age in this place and we thought a dog would make her_________. We were right. Rats carry many diseases and these diseases have killed and are still killing thousands and thousands of men today in many countries. Rats are dangerous not only in one way. They not only carry diseases into men's homes, they also eat up men's food. They eat 33 million tons of grain every year. Men starve because rats eat their food. Rats are clever, too. They have good leaders to tell them the food is terrible when men put poison in it. There are a lot of rats in our cities and villages today. We can go to the moon, but we can not kill all these terrible animals. Is this dangerous enemy too clever and grows too fast, or are we not clever enough and not clean enough?
