John and Bobby joined a wholesale company together just after graduation from college the same year. Both worked very hard. After several years, however, the boss promoted (提升) Bobby to the position of manager but John remained an ordinary worker. John couldn't understand it anymore, gave his resignation (辞呈) to the boss and complained that the boss didn't value hardworking workers, but only promoted those who flattered (奉承) him.
The boss knew John worked very hard for the years. He thought for a moment and said, "Thank you for your criticism (批评), but I have a request. I hope you'll do one more thing for our company before you leave. Perhaps you'll change your mind and take back your resignation."
John agreed. The boss asked him to go and find out anyone selling watermelon on the market. John went and returned soon. He said he had found out a man selling watermelon. The boss asked how much per kg? John shook his head and went back to the market to ask and returned to tell the boss $1.2 per kg.
Boss told John to wait a second, and he called Bobby to come to his office. He asked Bobby to go and find anyone selling watermelon on the market. Bobby went, returned and said, "Boss, only one person selling watermelon. $1.2 per kg, and $10 for 10 kg. He has 340 melons in all, 58 of which are on the table. Every melon weighs about 2 kg. Bought from the South two days ago, they're fresh and red, good quality."
John was very impressed and realized the difference between himself and Bobby. He decided not to resign but to learn from Bobby.
My dear friends, chances exist in the daily details. For the same matter, a more successful person sees more and farther so that he can find out an opportunity and catch it to achieve his aim.

A wild baby bison(野牛) at Yellowstone National Park had to be killed because of tourists.
The tourists thought that the baby bison looked cold. They put it in their car and drove to a park ranger(管理员) station.
A ranger described the action of the tourists as a "dangerous move" because adult bison can look after their babies very well and they will attack(攻击) to protect their young.
Park rangers took the animal from the car and set it free. But, sadly, the baby was refused by its family because it had the smell from humans.
Yellowstone National Park explained on Facebook that the smell from people can cause parent animals to refuse to accept their young. The park tried again and again to make the baby bison lives with its parents. After several times they had to give up.
The tourists were fined(罚款) $110 for touching park wildlife. Park rules say that visitors to Yellowstone should stay at least 22 meters away from all wildlife, and at least 90 meters away from bears and wolves.

Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12, a white gardenia (栀子花) was delivered to my house. No card came with it. Calls to the flowershop were not helpful at all. After a while I stopped trying to discover the sender's name and just delighted in the beautiful white flower in soft pink paper.
But I never stopped imagining who the giver might be.
My mother encouraged these imaginings. She'd ask me if there was someone for whom I had done special kindness. Perhaps it was the old man across the street whose mail I'd delivered during the winter. As a girl, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy I had run into.
When I was 17, I didn't get good grades and I felt very sad, and then I cried myself to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, there was a message on my mirror, "If we let sadness go, happiness will surely come to you." I thought about those words for a long time. When I finally went to get the glass cleaned, my mother knew everything was all right.
One month before my graduation, my father died, I felt so sad that I became completely uninterested in my upcoming graduation dance, and I didn't care if I had a new dress or not. But my mother, in her own sadness, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved and lovable. In truth, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia — lovely, strong and perfect with perhaps a bit of mystery.
My mother died ten days after I was married. I was 26. That was the year the gardenia stopped coming.
31. From the age of ________, the writer began to receive a gardenia every year on her birthday.A.17 | B.12 | C.26 | D.10 |

A.the writer's father | B.the writer's mother | C.a boy classmate | D.one of the neighbors |
A.mother's love | B.the writer's bad luck |
C.teenagers' problems while growing up | D.how to pace difficulties |

Many people would like to watch sport matches. First, you need to know about audience(观众) manners. The following will show you how to be an audience.
Most sporting arenas(竞技场) have rules for audience written on the back of the tickets. Read your ticket carefully before you arrive. Try to reach your seat half an hour before the start of the event and don't leave when a game is in progress. When you have, remember to take away your soft drink bottles and other rubbish.
During exciting games, try to control yourself. Don't criticize(批评) the performance of players and coaches. Be careful with your words, since some may cause anger among other people in the audience.
Clapping(鼓掌) is a special form of body language you can use to communicate with players, but you should do it properly. When players first appear, clap your hands together to welcome them, but don't go on for too long. After an excellent performance, clap warmly. If someone fails, your clapping will help encourage them.
