One day in April, a special activity called “Food Street” was held on the playground at Railway No. 1 Middle School in Xi’an.

Dumplings are traditional Chinese food. On the lunar New Year’s Day, most families make a lot of delicious dumplings. To make them, we can follow these easy steps.

The first step is to mix the flour (面粉) with water. When the dough (面团) is ready, we can begin to make dumpling wrappers (薄皮). We roll the dough into small, thin and round pieces so that they can be easy to cook. Then it’s time to prepare the filling (馅), usually, we use meat such as beef or pork, and some vegetables for filling. Remember to cut these things into small pieces, put some salt and oil into it and mix them.

When all these are done, we can start making dumplings. First put a spoonful of filling in the center of the wrappers. Then stick (粘) the two opposite sides together. The best shape of dumpings is like a ship. When they are boiling in the pan, they look like ships sailing in the sea. The smell can make your mouth water.

These days many people are interested in losing weigh (体重). It is very popular among people, especially young people. Everybody hopes to become thin quickly. Some people even take medicine. When you want to go shopping, you will decide how much money you can pay for new clothes and think about the kinds of clothes you really need. Then you just only look for those clothes. There’re labels (标签) include all new clothes. The labels tell you how to take care of your clothes. The labels may say “dry-clean only”. If you put these clothes into the water to wash them, you may ruin (损坏) them.

Many clothes today must be dry-cleaned. Dry-cleaned is expensive. So when you buy new clothes, check if they will need to be dry-cleaned. You’ll save money if your clothes can be washed in water.

You can also save money if you buy clothes that are well-made. Well-made clothes last longer. They look good even after they have been washed many times. Clothes that cost more money are not always made better. They don’t always fit better. Sometimes the less expensive clothes look and fit better than the more expensive ones.

Customs on Eating

Food in China and western countries is different. Chinese may spend half of their time on food. Chinese people choose food very carefully. They only use fresh materials to make food. For example, they only eat fresh fish. Chinese have a lot of ideas for cooking. They can cook a chicken in over ten ways.     46     Western countries, like England or America, don’t have fresh food because they buy their food from supermarkets which only sell stored materials (储存的材料).     47     They are unhealthy for man’s body.
