Once upon a time , there was a saint(圣人). In his final years, someone asked him about teachers from whom he had learned all wisdom, so the saint told him three stories:
One day, I visited a village. It was late and no one was outside. At last, I saw a man who was trying to make a hole in a wall. I asked him if I could find a place to stay. He replied that I could stay with him if I didn’t mind staying with a thief. I stayed with him for a month. Every night, he would go out to “work.” Many times, he would come back with nothing. However, he never lost hope and said, “Tomorrow I will try again.” In the past years, there were many moments when I became so hopeless that I just wanted to give up what I was doing. And then suddenly, I would recollect the words of the thief.
There was another day when I was walking along the bank of a river. I saw a dog who was very thirsty and wanted to drink water from the river. However, he was afraid of his own image (身影)
reflected in the water. He looked into the river, barked and then ran away. He did this several times. Finally, he managed to take a drink from the river despite(尽管) his fears.
I met a little boy the other day in a small town. He was carrying a lighted candle(蜡烛) with him. I asked him , “Did you light the candle by yourself?” He said yes. I asked him again, “Then can you tell me where the light came from?” The boy laughed. He blew out the candle and asked me, “You see, I just put out the candle. Could you tell me where the light has gone?” I couldn’t answer and he told me, “It has returned to where it came from. “Since then, I have dropped all conceit(自责).
I have had no teachers, but it doesn’t mean that I have nowhere to learn the wisdom of life.

One morning, the sun shone happily from the blue sky onto the house of Verona. The birds sat in the trees and sang, and the people of the city were beginning their daily work. The shopkeepers were opening their shops, and children were playing in the streets.
Two young men were walking toward the marketplace. They were servants of the Capulet family.
“Look at my new sword(剑), Gregory,” said one of the servants. “Isn’t nice and shiny?”
“It certainly is,” agreed Gregory. He watched as his friend, Sampson, waved the sword around. “Be careful with it. You don’t want to hurt anybody,” cautioned Gregory.
Sampson, however, was very pleased with his new sword. He continued to wave it around in the air, pretending(假装) to be in a sword fight. He thought that perhaps he would like to fight somebody with his new sword.
“Just imagine what I could do to one of those Montagues with this sword,” he laughed. “I could cut them to pieces!”
He put the sword away and the two young servants continued walking down the street, joking and laughing. Then, on the other side of the street, they saw two servants of the Montague family.
“Watch this,” said Sampson, and he made a face at the Montague servants.
“Are you making a face at me?” asked Abraham, the taller of the two Montague servants.
“Yes, I am,” answered Sampson proudly. “I can do that because my master is better than yours. What are you going to do about it?”
It wasn’t long before all the men had their swords in their hands. Soon they were all fighting.

I was cycling(骑车) and saw a person about 250 meters ahead of me. I could tell he was cycling a little slower than me and I decided to try to catch up with him. I had about a kilometer to go on the road before turning off.
I started cycling faster and faster and with every block, I got just a little bit closer to him. After a few minutes I was only about 100 meters behind him, so I really picked up the pace and tried my best.
Finally, I caught up with him and passed him. I felt so good. I “beat him”, but he didn’t even know we were racing.
After I passed him, I found that I had missed(错过) my turn, had gone six blocks past it and had to turn around and go all the way back.
Isn’t that what happens in life when we race with others, trying to outdo(胜过) them or trying to show that we are more successful? We spend our time and energy running after them and we miss out on our own paths.
The problem with unhealthy competition(竞赛) is that it’s a never-ending cycle. There will always be somebody ahead of you in one way or another. What you should do is just run your own race and wish others well.
Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.
回答下面5个问题, 每题答案不超过5个词。
96. What did the writer decide to do when he saw a person ahead of him?
97. How did the writer feel when he passed the person?
98. Why did the writer have to turn around?
99. What do we want to show when we race with others?
100. What does the passage mainly tell us?
