18-year-old Brennan Smith, a colorblind boy, started his custom (定制的) sock business in middle school, with a small loan (贷款) he got from his parents. Up till now, he has sold over $1 million worth of socks online in the last four years.
Brennan thought of the idea for his custom sock company at just 13 years old. He was attending a high school basketball game in his hometown of Sherwood, Oregon, and noticed that many kids of his age were wearing the same white Nike sport socks. The boy told himself that if these white plain socks were so popular with kids, then some cool custom designs would surely be an even greater hit.
But the boy didn't tell his parents about the business idea at once. He spent six months researching and drawing up a business plan. When he had everything planned out, he asked his parents for a loan. "They thought the idea was a little out there," Brennan recently told CNN Money, but he kept pushing, and at last received a $3,000 loan to start his company. Then he began to work on his own designs. The fact that he was colorblind didn't stop him and he has created over 200 designs now.
Business was slow the first year, but then Brennan started pushing his HoopSwagg products (产品) heavily on the Internet. Orders soon started coming in large numbers, and HoopSwagg became a popular brand among custom sock lovers. Right now, his designs can be found on HoopSwagg website, Amazon and eBay.
Four years after starting his business, Brennan has achieved great success while balancing school, housework and social life. And he says he loved every minute of it.
24. The writing purpose of this passage is ________.A.to tell us how to start a business | B.to introduce a story about a colorblind boy's business |

The Australian government researchers believe that the sunlight is good for people’s eyes. They compared the vision(视力) and habits of 100 seven-year-old children in Singapore and Australia. In all, 30% of the Singaporean children were short-sighted—this rate(比率) was ten times higher than Australian children.
Both groups spend a similar amount(数量) of time reading, watching television and playing computer games. However the Singaporean children spent an average (平均) of only half an hour a day outdoors—90 minutes less than the Australian children.
Professor Ian Morgan, from the Australian Research Council’s vision Centre, said, “Humans are naturally long-sighted, but when people begin to go to school and spend little or no time outdoors, the number of short-sighted people gets larger. We’re also seeing more and more short-sighted children in cities all around the world and the main reason may be that city children spend less time outdoors.
Daylight can be hundreds of times brighter than indoor light. But why does playing outside prevent us from becoming short-sighted? Scientists believe that natural light has a special chemical(化学物质) which stops the eyeball from growing out of shape and prevents people from becoming short-sighted.
So be outdoors. It doesn’t matter if that time is spent having a picnic or having sports.
27. How much time did the Australian children spend outdoors on average according to the research?
A.30 minutes. | B.60 minutes. |
C.90 minutes. | D.120 minutes. |
A.If people spend less time outdoors they will certainly become short-sighted. |
B.There are fewer short-sighted Singaporean Children than Australian children because they have more knowledge of protecting their eyesight. |
C.There will be fewer risks of getting short-sighted if people spend two or three hours a day playing outside. |
D.When people begin to go to school they will become long-sighted. |
A.Why natural daylight has a special chemical. |
B.Why daylight prevents people from becoming short-sighted. |
C.Why daylight is much brighter than indoor light. |
D.What the special chemical which can stop eyeballs from growing out of shape is. |
The evening arrived; the boys took their places. The master, in his cook's uniform, stood at the table; his poor helpers were behind him; the gruel(稀粥) was served out; and after they spoke to God to give thanks, there was little time left to eat. The gruel disappeared in no time; the boys whispered to each other, and encouraged Oliver to ask for more. Oliver was very hungry and decided to take a risk. He rose from the table; and went to the master, plate and spoon in hand, said:
"Please, sir. I want some more."
①
The master was a fat, healthy man, but his face became very pale. He looked at the small boy in great surprise for some seconds, and nearly fell but for the support to the table. The helpers were frozen with wonder; the boys with fear.
"What!" said the master at last, in a weak voice.
"Please, sir," replied Oliver, "I want some more."
The master hit Oliver's head with the ladle(长勺) and screamed for Mr. Bumble.
②
Some people were sitting in talking about something, when Mr. Bumble rushed into the room in great excitement, and spoke directly to the gentleman in the high chair, said:
"Mr. Limbkins, I beg your pardon, sir! Oliver Twist has asked for more!"
③
"For more!" said Mr. Limbkins. "Calm yourself, Bumble, and answer me clearly. Do I understand that he asked for more, after he had eaten the supper which was offered?"
"He did, sir," replied Bumble.
"That boy will be hanged," said the gentleman in white. "I know that boy will be hanged."
Everybody supported the gentleman's idea. A heated discussion took place. Oliver was locked in a cold dark room and no boys were allowed to talk to him. The next morning a notice was put up on the outside of the gate, offering a reward of five pounds to anybody who would employ(雇佣) Oliver Twist. In other words, five pounds and Oliver Twist were offered to any man or woman who wanted an apprentice(学徒) to any trade or business.
④
"I never was more sure of anything in my life," said the gentleman in white, as he knocked at the gate and read the notice the next morning. "I never was more sure of anything in my life—that boy will be hanged."
Adapted from Oliver Twist by Dickens

Sometimes, you feel down or unhappy and it is hard to come back to your high spirit. So if you're having a bad day and need a boost, then help is just a click away.
A website is trying to offer people positive (积极的) messages from strangers to cheer them up. It announces to be "the nicest place on the Internet", where happy people can present their positive thoughts and feelings to those who are in low spirits.
The website, the nicest place on the internet, lets people post videos of themselves blowing kisses and leaving positive and encouraging messages to lift visitors' spirits.
The website was created by Jeff Lam and is considered to help many people out when they feel low. The well-known artist who lives in San Francisco said he came up with the idea when he and his friend Lauren were having one of those bad days.
"We tried to become cheerful, but none of the usual methods seemed to be working. Not music. Not food. What we hoped was something positive, honest and good. So with only a camera and work-free weekend, we created ‘The Nicest Place on the Internet’." he explained on his website.
One user of the site, Joseph Meehan, 27, from Birmingham, said, "It's a fun and exciting website. I visit every once in a while when I'm missing my friends or family. I think it could really be a help to people that are feeling down or sad. It may even stop them from doing something stupid. You can also post your video to the website, and they add it to the series. It's very easy to share the love."
