To: Class 1, Grade 9 From: Jim Stone Subject: Web design (网页设计) class Sent: March 16, 11:30 AM Hi, classmates. I’m writing to see if any of you are interested in taking a special class with me. I want to learn how to make my own website. It turns out that a woman who my mother once worked with has opened her own company that creates websites for other companies. Her name is Wendy and she teaches web design at her home on weekends. She has one class now on Saturday mornings, but I can’t take it because it’ s already full. (She’s a very popular teacher!) But here’ s the good news: I called her, and she said that if I could find at least seven other students who are interested, she would be able to add a second class starting next week on Saturday afternoons from 2 to 4 p.m. Please let me know right away if you want to do this with me. It is a great opportunity (机会) to learn! Jim |

When Grandma welcomed us, she was dressed in bright colors and wore jewelry I never knew she had. She seemed to be in a good mood (情绪), but because of her deafness, communication was still difficult.
It had been half a year since my last visit. She must have thought that as an overseas student, I didn’t get to eat much good food anymore. So, with her wrinkled (有皱纹的) hand, she passed me some homemade pastries (糕点).
Her hands tested the temperature of my cup again and again, and every time it showed a slight sign of cooling down, Grandma poured in more hot water. She also never allowed me to stop eating. As soon as I finished what was on my plate, she gave me something new to try. Finally, when my stomach couldn’t take any more, she stopped and held my hands as she sat beside me.
When it was time to leave, she walked downstairs to see us off. The sun shone on the white pearls round her neck. She was smiling, and her wrinkles sat happily on her soft skin. People usually compare wrinkles to a dry trunk (树干). But to me, my grandmother’s wrinkles are among the loveliest things I’ve ever seen.
There used to be a time when I disliked old age and stayed away from elderly people, but that was because of my ignorance (无知). And now I understand that there’s beauty in everything. My grandma’s wrinkles are just like a thousand stories being told all at once.

We can’t remember clearly since when we started to take our mobiles to a dinner table. This happens a lot, especially when we eat out. Once a dish comes, instead of lifting our chopsticks, we take out our mobiles and click (点击). Later, we post the photos onto Weibo or Wechat, waiting to be “liked.” Then we check our mobiles from time to time during the meal, to see whether we get “liked” or not. We just cannot leave our mobiles for simply a meal.
Does that sound familiar (熟悉的) to you? Do you do that often? If not, how do you feel when others do that when having dinner with you?
A recent study suggests that what we are used to doing is not that good. Spending time taking photos of food makes the food less pleasant. To test this, some researchers did an experiment. Some people were asked to take photos before they could enjoy food. It turned out that the more photos they took, ________. So, why not stop taking photos and just enjoy the food ahead of you?
Besides the scientific result, there are also some other bad influences of taking photos of food before meals. After posting the photos onto the Internet, one will be unable to control himself and check his mobile many times. “Does everyone accept my photo? I hope a lot of people like it!” It seems like your mobile secretly calls your name all the time, even when you are with real people.
So, next time you go out to have dinner with your family or friends, how about not taking photos of food? Let the food be delicious as it is and share your life with people around you. Trust me, it will be a wonderful time.
9. Which of the following can be put in the ________ in Paragraph 3?A.the less cheerful they became | B.the less delicious the food seemed to them |
C.the more interested they were in the food | D.the more “liked” they got on Weibo or Wechat |
A.People often treat mobiles as real people. |
B.People regard mobiles as their secret friends. |
C.People often make phone calls when they get together. |
D.People pay more attention to mobiles than to real people. |
A.We take out our mobiles and click when a dish comes. |
B.We check our mobiles from time to time during the meal. |
C.Spending time taking photos of food makes the food less pleasant. |
D.Some people were asked to take photos before they could enjoy food. |

It seems like only yesterday since I first started school in the Czech Republic (捷克共和国). It was a totally new country for me-a place where I was only supposed to stay for one year as an exchange student.
I still remember I was late that morning, as I got off at the wrong metro station (地铁站). I felt ashamed (羞愧的) when I sent a text to my teacher that I would be late. After she picked me up at the station, she said, “Don’t worry, Linda. It’s fine to be late by just a few minutes. The teachers will understand.”
Later, as I walked to the classroom, my English teacher taught me some basic Czech sentences so I could introduce myself to my classmates.
The next moment was probably the most embarrassing of my life. Now I can still picture myself standing in front of 30 strangers and introducing myself in poor Czech. I wasn’t even sure whether they would understand me or not. However, many of them came to my desk during the break and tried to make friends with me. They even went for a walk with me around the school after lunch.
Now, I’ve been studying in this country for three years. Every time I look back to my first day of senior high, I always wish that I wasn’t so shy. Though my new life didn’t start easily, I was so lucky to have my new classmates there to help and talk to me.
41. Why was the writer late for her first day at school? (No more than 9 words)42. What were the writer’s classmates like? (No more than 3 words )
