Who wants to eat food that is thrown away as waste? Believe it or not, that’s exactly what world leaders did at a lunch held by the United Nations in 2015.
During the meal, the world leaders enjoyed dishes like salads and burgers made with thrown-away vegetables and fruits. Chef Dan Barber, who helped create the meal, hoped that the experience would make the leaders pay more attention to the issue of food waste.
It is a huge problem. One out of nine people on Earth does not get enough food. Yet every year over one third of the food produced worldwide goes to waste!
Why is so much food wasted? Firstly, food is often thrown away before it reaches customers because too much of it is produced, or because it is not kept properly in farms. Secondly, shops and supermarkets usually throw away unsold food. Finally, customers often buy more food than they need, so a lot of uneaten food is wasted.
How can you waste less food? When eating out, you may ask for less food and take home what is left. Visit fast food restaurants less often, since they are usually more wasteful. Encourage your favorite restaurants to give unsold food to food banks.
You can also waste less food at home. Use smaller rice bowls so that you serve less rice. Encourage family members to use unfinished rice to make rice puddings. Tell family members to make a shopping list and buy only what is on the list when shopping for food.
Food waste is a growing problem and we, either farmers or food sellers or customers, must take this problem more seriously and do what we can to help.

Tom Sawyer tried to cut the cupboard with the knife. Then it was the time for him to dress up. However, Tom didn't want to take the trouble to wash his face and hands. I remember my first fire. I was the second volunteer on the scene, so there was a pretty good chance I was going to get in.
When I found the captain, he was having a conversation with the homeowner in a hurry. She was surely having one of the worst days of her life. Here it was, the middle of the night, she was standing outside in the pouring rain, under an umbrella, without shoes, while her house was in fire.

Now I know what you’re thinking, but I’m no hero. A few weeks later, the department received a letter from the homeowner thanking us for the valiant effort displayed in saving her home. The act of kindness she noted above all others: someone had even got her a pair of shoes.
So as I look around this room at people who either have achieved, or are on their way to achieving, remarkable levels of success, I would offer this reminder don’t wait. Don’t wait until you make your first million to make a difference in somebody’s life. If you have something to give, give it now.
Not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody’s life, but every day offer us an opportunity (机会) to affect one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.

Beggars are often seen sitting by the side of a street with heads bowed as people pass by. Some ask people passing by for a small amount of money and some just sit and wait to be given money.
To solve the problem, another giving plan has been suggested. Ten blue money boxes will be placed in busy places such as the market and the railway station. It aims to encourage people not to give money directly to beggars but instead to give generously to local homeless people.
Supporters of this plan think it will be a useful way to solve the beggars' alcohol and drug problems (酗酒和吸毒). But the police are against the plan arguing that beggars who do not receive cash may turn to criminality! (犯罪) to fed their addictions(瘾). Most of the beggars dislike the plan because they think they will not get enough money from the boxes for their showers, food and clothes.
Begging is a big social problem both in developing and developed countries. Government must play a big role in solving this problem.
