Have you ever seen guides letting you get close to elephants and even offering you rides? Don’t do this, we’re here to explain why you should not ride an elephant.
Humans often think it’s OK to have elephants under their control (控制). Many people in Southeast Asia buy and sell elephants illegally (违法地). But elephants are wild animals. Humans shouldn’t do that.
Elephants are smart. They can feel sad and happy. Wild elephants won’t let humans ride on top of them. So in order to control them, humans catch baby elephants and train them in pretty bad ways. These all cause a lot of pain for their spirit and bodies.
Although elephants have large bodies, their spines (脊椎) are not strong enough to carry humans. And many of them die as a result of years of carrying humans on their backs.
Asian elephants are in danger. The United Nations says that only about 35,000 Asian elephants are left in the wild now. Riding elephants is one of the main causes (原因) to their death.

Dolphins live their whole lives in water. But they are not fish. They are mammals (哺乳动物) that live in water. That’s why a dolphin comes to the top of the water so often. It has to breathe air. A dolphin’s nose isn’t easy to be seen. It’s just a small hole on top of its head. The hole is called a blowhole (喷水孔).
A dolphin comes up every half minute or so to breathe. It opens its blowhole and take in air. Then it closes its blowhole and dives under the water again. But a dolphin can stay under the water for six or seven minutes if it has to. It can hold its breath.
A dolphin listens with two ears. It can hear all kinds of noises under water. It can hear small stones rolling. It can hear the sound that fish and other dolphins make. A dolphin’s ears may be small, but its mouth is big. It has to be big. It holds almost one hundred teeth. These teeth are all the same shape and size. They are used for catching food, but not for chewing. A dolphin opens its big mouth and seizes a fish firmly between its two rows of teeth. Then it swallows the whole fish.
A dolphin swims very fast. It is said that a dolphin swims faster than anything else in the water. So men are trying to study their skin and shape. They are learning ways to make boats go faster through the water. Most people believe that dolphins are very clever. Some scientists say they are cleverer than dogs. But dolphins are not all alike. Imagine walking into a movie theater without being greeted by the smell of popcorn. It’s hard to believe, isn’t it? For many people, popcorn goes hand in hand with movies. They can’t have one without the other. But how did this happen?
The relationship (关系) between the two is younger than you may think. In the mid-1800s, popcorn was already a popular snack in the USA. Vendors (小贩) sold it on the streets. People, especially kids, loved this street food. In the early 1900s, vendors started to sell popcorn outside movie theaters.
However, theater owners were against popcorn. They believed it would make the experience of watching a movie less enjoyable. Eating it would make too much noise during the silent movies.
About 20 years later, when movies added sounds, the eating noise problem went away. More and more people went to the movies. Some of them even secretly took popcorn into the theaters. Later, more movie theaters opened. People were allowed (允许) to eat popcorn in some of the theaters while they were watching movies.
In the 1930s, the theater owners realized that people didn’t need to buy popcorn from street vendors. Because popcorn was easy to make, they could make and sell it on their own. They did that and the smell of popcorn drew more people to their theaters. The owners made a lot of money, and people enjoyed themselves at the movies.
Today, popcorn is still an important part of the movie-going experience. Roles, a man who once ate three bags of popcorn, said, “People come to theaters sometimes just for the popcorn. They don’t even care what is playing!”
