It is everyone's duty to help animals to stop extinction (灭绝). As a student, there are so many things you can do yourself too! Please look at the following tips (建议) to help the endangered animals.

Send a letter to your local environment protecting center and show how you feel about the quick extinction of animals. Use the facts to write what you have found. Give some advice to the officers who make the strong rules to save animals.

Draw pictures and make a poster. Put this poster somewhere at school or where people will usually see it. Add some texts in the sign to make it clear why you care about the loss (丧失) of animals. It may encourage people to do something to protect the animals.

Avoid buying things that come from endangered species (物种). When you travel, be careful about what you buy. You shouldn't buy things made from endangered animals or endangered tree species from forests that the animals live on.

Watch your diet. Before eating meals, you should see if you will break a food chain. If you see somebody doing something bad for the food chain, please stop him at once.

【推荐1】Since the mid-1970s, Mike Reynolds, founder of Earthship Biotecture has had one goal to build green environmentally friendly houses. His designs have become better over the years but his new Earthships are still built with three goals: to be made from environmentally friendly materials, doesn’t it? However, for people who want to lead a green lifestyle, living in an Earthship has become a great green choice.

Although the walls of Earthships can also be made of concrete (水泥), stone, cans and plastic bottles (轮胎) have become the normal material to use because they are easy to find and change to “bricks”. More than 2 million tyres appear in rubbish in the United States. In addition, rubber tires filled with earth weigh up to 150 kg each so they can support heavy weight. They also keep the house cool in summer and warm in winter, which means that people don’t have to keep air conditioners at 25.5 degrees and they don’t have to use air conditioners at all as their houses remain as cold as ice!

Earthships put a stop to wasting water and electricity. They have special roofs (屋顶) that catch and store rainwater. Once this clean water has come out of showers, it becomes “grey water”, when they realize that it is used only in toilets, their disgust turns to amazement. By the time they learn that Earthships are powered completely by the wind, sun and other clean energy, their amazement has usually become one word: “wow”!

Mike Reynolds hopes that in the future all houses will be built with sustainability (耐久性) in mind just like his Earthships are. As we all know time is running out to deal with environmental problems. Any creative designs such as the Earthships are a welcome change. The world needs more like-minded people to voice the world’s problems.

1. What can we know about Mr. Reynolds’ first Earthship homes?
A.It’s difficult and expensive to build.B.It helps lead to a green lifestyle.
C.It’s only a choice for wealthy people.D.It’s powered by coal, oil and natural gas.
2. Why have recycled tyres become the normal material to use?
①It can support heavy weight.
②It’s easy to find.
③It is as cold as ice.
④It keeps the house at a comfortable temperature.
A.①②③B.①③④C.①②④D.②③④
3. What does the underlined word “disgust” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Worry.B.Fear.C.Anger.D.Dislike.
4. What is your special way to help solve environmental problems? (Within 20 words)

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。本文主要介绍了十二岁的Anna Du开发了一个机器人,并用它清理海洋垃圾的故事。

【推荐2】12-year-old Girl Built a Robot to Find Plastics in the Ocean

When walking along the beach, Anna Du noticed plastics there. She reached down to pick them up, and quickly realized there were many more tiny pieces than she could deal with. It seemed impossible to clean them all up.

At the age of 12, this girl tried to solve the problem like any good scientist—first by doing a little research.

That’s how she learned that 8 million tons of plastics end up in the oceans every year.

Then she got to work building something that could help solve the problem; a remote-operated vehicle (遥控潜水器), or ROV. Her ROV can move through water. Also, it can find plastics on the ocean floor.

“She has a very good engineering sense to break down a problem like this and then go after it,” says engineer Casey Machado. “It sounds simple, but it’s a level of thinking that’s really amazing.”

Du started attending public events and workshops at a university when she was five years old, and so she picked up the engineering skills necessary to build her ROV. She says actually getting her ROV to move through water well was not easy. She failed many times, but she never gave up trying and testing.

When asked about future plans, she mentions, “I know I want to be an engineer because I like building things to help solve world problems.” “But I’m not sure what kind of engineer I want to be yet.”

Du thanks her parents, who for years have taken her to student outreach activities, for supporting her interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). She says she has been able to meet students and scientists there.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了Joshi通过创办一个组织来教人们如何通过种植当地树木来恢复森林。
【推荐3】阅读下面短文,完成短文后的问题。

Aadya Joshi looks out at the eucalyptus trees (桉树). They were planted to take the place of a forest that was cleared for wood. The view doesn’t make Joshi happy. Eucalyptus trees don’t grow naturally here in India. “Native (本土的) trees should have been planted,”she says.

Joshi started The Right Green. The group teaches people how to bring back forests by growing native trees. Once, Earth was home to 6 trillion trees. Now, only about 3 trillion are left. “Planting new trees to replace those that have been lost sounds like a good idea,” she says. “But what people are doing in many places is not restoring (恢复) forests. They’re just replanting. There’s a difference.”

Trees are important to the health of the planet. They help clean the air. They’re also a source of food and medicine. But 46% of the world’s trees have been cut down. Some actions to replant trees have made environmental problems even worse. This happened in Chile, in South America. Big companies cut down forests for wood. Then they replanted trees. But they used the wrong kinds of trees and created tree plantations (人造林).

“They’re not really what we imagine a forest to be,” says Robert Heilmayr, who studies the forest. “These trees are more like crops. At cleaning the air, they are not as good as forests.”

Now, a program called AFR100 is started in Africa. It says restoring native forests is more helpful. It will restore almost 100 million hectares (公项) of African land by 2030.

1. Why were eucalyptus trees planted in Joshi’s hometown?

2. How does Joshi like planting new trees to replace native forests?

3. Why do some actions make things worse?
