At present, too much carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) makes the earth warmer and warmer and causes terrible effect to human beings. To save our planet, to save ourselves, a new lifestyle called low-carbon life(低碳生活) becomes popular. Low carbon means low energy and no waste. It is necessary for everybody to learn to live a low-carbon life.
To live a low-carbon life, we’d better save energy as possible. Turn off the lights and TV whenever they are not needed. If possible, use cold water to wash clothes or dishes. Take a short shower and try to take a cold one when the weather gets warm. Don’t do the cooking with electricity.
To live a low-carbon life, we should eat less meat. Everybody knows eating too much meat makes people fat and easy to have heart disease, but maybe you don’t know keeping animals for food produces even more carbon dioxide than all the cars in the world, and being a vegetarian can help reduce one and a half tons of carbon dioxide a year. Maybe it is a little difficult, but it’s really necessary.
To live a low-carbon life, we are supposed to do less shopping. When we go shopping, we may drive a car or take other transportation. On the one hand, these machines pollute the air and waste energy. On the other hand, most of us always buy some useless things because of some advertisements. It is not only a waste of money but also causes trouble to the earth, because as you know, making everything will produce carbon dioxide more or less.
There are many other ways to live low-carbon life, such as recycling things, planting trees and reusing textbooks. If we can keep it a habit in our daily life, the earth will become a safer planet for us to live on.

Paper was invented by a Chinese man called Cai Lun almost 2, 000 years ago. But it was not made in Europe until the year 1100. Four hundred years later, a German discovered that he could make the best paper from trees. After that, countries rich in forests, such as Canada, Sweden, America, Finland became the most important ones in paper making.
Paper can be used in many ways. The common uses include newspapers, magazines and books. But do you know that paper can be used for keeping warm? In Finland, the farmers wear paper boots(靴子) to keep their feet warm in the snow. And houses can be insulated(使绝缘)from heat or cold with paper.
However, we have to understand that paper still comes from trees now. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth some day in the near future. Every day people throw away about 2, 800 tons of paper in our city. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. So you can count how many trees we’re cutting down every day. The fact is that it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow.
So we must start saving paper right now. We can use both sides of every piece of paper. We can make useful things out of used paper. We can use china cups instead of paper ones. When shopping, we can use fewer paper bags and reuse them if we have some.
In short, we should keep a balance(平衡)between using paper and protecting trees, and do it now before it is too late.

In fact, many cartoon films draw adults’ attention. For example, Anomalisa, a film for adults, has been a huge success. And there is also the chance that adults will love a kid’s film more, for example, The Incredibles. So, what is the reason behind it?
First, a lot of cartoon films are really good. Plenty of gifted people join hands in making films like Toy Story and Ice Age. Screenwriters, programmers and musicians are all working together in order to bring the best result to the big screen. And usually, they succeed.
Also, they bring out the memories of our childhood. Remember the time when you were a child, it was a Saturday morning and you used to turn on the TV and enjoy cartoons? Well, cartoon films bring out that special feeling.
Cartoon films have well written roles facing difficult situations. For example, Woody has to deal with the fact that he may not be Andy’s favorite toy after all in Toy Story. Sometimes the stories are even better than those in adult films. So, it comes as no surprise that adults will fall in love with cartoon films.
Moreover, by watching a cartoon film, we forget the boring life and leave our problems behind for the moment. Who wouldn’t love to have his own personal Baymax (from Big Hero 6) that wouldn’t refuse to hare a hug every time there was sadness? If only our lives could be full of good-natured animals and brave children!

The Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, is one of the most famous buildings in the world. But although it’s widely known to the world, the tower has some secrets.
①__________
If you were in control of building the Eiffel Tower, where else would you live? Gustave Eiffel, who designed (设计) the tower, built himself a small apartment on the top level of the tower. Only a few VIPs were allowed to visit, such as superstar scientist Thomas Edison. Unused since the 1920s after Eiffel’s death, few knew about the apartment until 2015 when it opened for public visiting.
②__________
The top of the Eiffel Tower seems like the perfect place to study stars and weather. No wonder Eiffel set up two small laboratories on the third level where scientists studying the stars and weather could work. Eiffel carried out his own research as well. To learn more about how objects move against air, he dropped objects on ropes from the second level of the tower (about 380 feet above ground) and observed how they fell.
③__________
Maybe the Eiffel Tower should be renamed the Eco Tower. In 2015 workers gave the Iron Lady an environmentally friendly change by setting up two wind turbines (风力发电机) on the second level of the tower. They could turn wind into electricity for the tower’s shops and restaurants. A system was also set up to collect and lead rainwater into the tower’s toilets.
④__________
Some people visit the Eiffel Tower for the view (风景). Others come for more exciting activities. Soon after the tower was completed in 1898, a man walked up 704 of the tower’s steps on stilts (高跷). In 1952, three artists swung 400 feet above ground from ropes without protection. And in 2010, a man skated off a raised surface set up under the tower’s first level down a 90-foot-tall ramp (斜坡) to the ground.

Sometimes children need extra help to learn at school. In some schools in England, volunteer tutors work with children who are struggling to learn and write. The tutors spend time with them, away from their class, to help them learn to love books and enjoy school. These children can then become more confident about school and learning.
Lorna is six years old and struggling with her reading and writing. This is a report from her tutor, Mrs Snow, who has been visiting her at school.
When I first started working with Lorna, she was very shy and didn’t really enjoy reading.
Her class teacher told me she was very quiet in class. During our lessons together we spent lots of time reading books. We also played word games to help with her spelling and writing. As time went on, Lorna began to relax and became more confident. She realized that reading and writing could be lots of fun!
Lorna even wrote a book by herself about Beauty and the Beast. She also drew some lovely pictures to explain it. What great progress!
Her favorite reading book was called Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. She was very happy every time we sat down to read it!
Her class teacher is very pleased with how well Lorna is doing. Lorna proudly tells her classmates about what she has done in each lesson. I think they all want to join in as well!
I am very pleased that Lorna is also spending more time at home reading with her mom and dad. They are all enjoying reading together. Lorna tells me that they have bought her a special bookmark to use in her reading books.

My friend and I went outside to look for a pair of swimming glasses and saw someone at the bottom of the pool. We thought it was one of our friends playing but we quickly realised that it was a little boy who didn’t know how to swim. I knew something was wrong right away.
We looked around, but the adults(成年人) were talking far away in the backyard(后院) and there was no time to spare. I jumped in the pool, dove(潜) underwater, and came close to the little boy. I swam as hard as I could and pulled the little boy onto a step in the pool. As soon as I got him out of the water, my friend and I started shouting for help. Once the adults heard us, they ran over. The little boy wasn’t breathing(呼吸), which was really terrible. One neighbour did CPR(心肺复苏) and someone else called 120. Soon the doctors came and took the little boy to the hospital.
Luckily, the little boy is doing great now. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to get him out of the water quickly enough, but I did. I’ve been taking swimming lessons since I was three years old, and I’m thankful that I’m a strong swimmer.

The ABC song uses the same tune(曲调)as "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" No one knows who wrote it. The tune has been used by lots of music composers(作曲家). Even the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart used the tune.
When the ABC song first became popular, not very many children went to school. Most people never learned to read and write. Over time, it became more important to learn to read and write. So more and more children learned the song to help them to remember the letters of the alphabet.
Why do we sing the alphabet song at all? The answer is related to how we learn. Children have always learned from their parents and grandparents. Two hundred years ago, when most people didn't read or write, children had to remember what they were taught. Since they couldn't write things down, remembering was very important. Groups of people from all different places had their own songs that told stories. This was how people passed down their history from one generation to the next.
Because of the way our brains work, we can remember songs more easily than what we read. When we listen to music, we use more of our brain at one time. Because of that, we remember it better. So no one really knows exactly who wrote the ABC song. What we do know is that most children who learn to read and write in English now sing this song. We know it helps them remember the letters!
1. Why did children learn the ABC song?A.Because it was important to learn to read and write. |
B.Because the song helped them to learn the alphabet. |

D.Because people told stories by singing songs. |
A.Remembering played a very important role in children's learning. |
B.All of the children learned from their parents. |
C.People didn't learn to read or write 200 years ago. |
D.People from different places wrote the stories instead of songs. |
A.the ABC song | B.the music | C.the brain | D.the way |
A.who made the ABC song | B.why children sing the ABC song |
C.how the ABC song developed | D.what the ABC song is about |
