In Japan, young people come of age when they are 20. This event is celebrated in most areas of Japan with a special ceremony (A) _______ (call) Seijin no Hi or Coming of Age. On this important day in January, (B)young people go together to the local town hall, where the ceremony is held. They are from the same area and are all in the same school year.
The day often starts early for the girls, because they have to dress up for the ceremony. They wear a traditional Japanese dress (or kimono). These are extremely expensive, so most girls have to hire(租用) or borrow(C)one. Because the dress is very difficult to put on, some girls go to a special place where other women help them. They sometimes spend up to three hours getting dressed and doing their hair and make-up. Most boys wear suits, but some wear a traditional Japanese kimono for men.
When they are ready, the young people are photographed with their families. All the girls and boys then go to the local town hall or government office, where more photos are taken in the hall, and they listen to long speeches and sometimes sing songs. (D) Then the local government give a special certificate(证明书) to them. The boys and girls, now men and women, then go outside, where many more photos are taken. Finally, they leave and go out to celebrate together.

Many people know about endangered animals. However, do you know that there are also endangered cultures? The people of these cultures love their special ways of life. They are proud of their histories and their traditions. They want to continue living their own lifestyles. However, other stronger cultures are threatening(威胁)their cultures. Here are two examples.
The Nenet people live in the far north of Russia. They herd(放牧) and hunt(打猎) in the forests. Every spring small family groups meet to celebrate spring. Young men have competitions in sports to win brides(新娘)during this festival. However, under their land there is oil and gas. Now, many companies have rushed to their land to get the oil and gas. The companies polluted the land so seriously that the deer and fish on this land are killed, so some of the Nenet’s food is in danger.
The Haisla people live in the thick forests of Northwestern Canada. Their land used to have rich food, with deer and berries(浆果)in the forests and fish in the rivers. The Haisla have been under threat since the 19th century, when British settlers(殖民者) started taking their land. The settlers also brought illnesses. Recently, logging(伐木) companies have begun cutting trees on Haisla land. They drove away the deer and polluted the rivers, so no fish can be found.

Many English people would like to live in houses, not flats because most houses have gardens. They like growing vegetables and flowers when they have free time.
Most office workers start work at about nine in the morning and finish it at about five in
the afternoon, with an hour’s break at noon. They don’t go home for lunch. They just have quick meals near their offices. They usually have big meals at the weekend. After work, many English people like outdoor sports. They think sports are good for their health.
Children go to school at about 9:00 a.m. and go back home at about 3:30 p.m. Most
children have lunch at school. All children go to school when they are four or five years old.
Most shops open at about 9:00 a.m. and close at about 6:00 p.m. Usually they don’t close for lunch.
【推荐3】I have lived in France for nine years, but I cannot walk down the street without being recognized(认出) as an Englishman from 50 metres away before I open my mouth. Why?
In France, the quickest way to recognize an Englishman is that he’ll be the one with the belly(肚子) and the shirt hanging out. Englishmen often wear shapeless black T-shirts, either too big or too small. However, Frenchmen are more formal(正式的) in dressing. Their T-shirts have collars(领子). Shorts have buttons and zips rather than drawstrings(拉绳). Shoes look expensive.
Englishmen think of lunchtime as 1 p. m. , but for Frenchmen it is 12 o’clock, one hour earlier. This may explain the sad looks if an Englishman arrives at a local restaurant at 1:30 p. m. At that time most restaurants don’t have waiters. All the cooking and serving may be done by the boss and his wife. When you are shown to your table, just sit there and wait. Don’t wave your hands to the waiters. Englishmen think guests should do something to make the waiters pay attention to them. But in France some bread and water will come first, then the waiters will take your order according to the rhythm(节奏) of the restaurant. Have enough patience(耐心)!

Over 10 years ago, people had to leave their house to buy a train ticket. Now it can be done with a smart phone. Although the fast development of science and technology is making our life easier, it is creating problems for old people. For example, several months ago, an old man in Dalian was not allowed to travel by subway. At the station, he was asked to show his health QR code on the smart phone. He didn’t have a smart phone. In the end, he had to leave the station. Many old people worked hard for the world when they were young, but now it seems that the world has left them behind. What can be done to make a difference? Some volunteers are trying to help. They teach the elderly to use smart phones. However, it only helps to solve part of the problem.
Many old people have physical problems. They can’t see small screens clearly, and their fingers make it hard for them to use touch screens. To solve the problems, perhaps smart phone makers should make screens of the smart phones better so that the old can use them easily.
If you have grandparents or know some elderly people, lend a helping hand to them when they need it. Technologies that you think are easy to learn may be very difficult for them.

Your Internet experience makes you sad when the net speed is too slow. It ①________so long to open a web page, and the show that you’re watching stops every few minutes. That can be very annoying (令人气恼的) .But 5G can solve these problems.5G technology is used widely now. What influence will 5G really have on our lives?
The“G” in “5G”means the generations (代) of mobile network technologies. 1G means the first generation. It let us talk to each other. 2G let us send messages. 3G gave us mobile data and the Internet, and 4G made all of these things faster. With 5G you can download an HD movie in seconds, send and receive data almost without stopping.
5G is able to improve many advanced technologies, such as driver less cars. With a 5G network, almost no stopping in information exchange will allow driver less cars to run more safely, as they will be able to communicate in real time and avoid dangers. At the same time VR games (虚拟现实游戏) will become more popular with 5G because it can make games feel even more real.
②_________5G will make our lives more convenient, it will not be perfect. For one thing, 5G will not “travel” far. 5G will only cover about 300 meters. For ③__,we will have to buy new and expensive products only for 5G.

Cars powered by gasoline (汽油) were sold for many years before cars that use electricity. Car companies are now making cars that are fully powered by electricity only. How do these electric cars measure up to traditional gasoline cars?
Electric and gasoline cars look similar on the outside. They have very different parts under their hoods (引擎盖), though. Electric cars have one main moving part: the motor. But gasoline cars have hundreds of parts, often requiring frequent maintenance (保养). Having fewer parts makes the electric car cheaper to maintain and less likely to have mechanical (机械的) problems.
Electric cars are energy efficient (高效的), also making them cheaper to operate. It costs about $1.00 to travel 43 miles in an electric car. But it costs about $1.25 to go 18 miles in a gasoline car. Basically, an electric car can go twice as far as a gas car for the same price.
Electric cars do not have tailpipe emissions (尾气排放), making them more friendly to the environment, too.
While some details make electric cars seem attractive, other details aren’t as favourable. For example, some electric cars can travel only 60 to 120 miles on a full charge (充电). Most gas cars can drive hundreds of miles on a full tank (油箱).
There are certainly advantages to both electric cars and gasoline cars. It’s good to know that there is a choice.
