In a country where 1. 3 billion people speak 22 officially-recognized languages and hundreds of dialects (方言), communication online can be a problem.
Although there is a rapid rise in the number of Indian internet users who don’t speak English as the first language, 60% won’t shop online because of language problems.
Niki, a voice-enabled e-business app, is trying to solve this. It helps people to use voice commands (指令) to do shopping online. Users speak to the app in their preferred language, ordering products. Niki then presents buying choices from its product providers.
The company’s goal market is people who don’t live in cities and do not speak English In the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, the app has been used for more than 10 million online transactions (交易) since 2018. Now Niki can offer people service in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and English. The company is planning to introduce seven more languages, and hopes to carry out its business in 10 more states.
Thanks to a machine learning algorithm (算法), Niki is able to understand languages better and better. When the app first appeared, the algorithm only had a 65% accuracy (准确) rate. Now, it can deal with voice commands with 95% accuracy because of a bank of over 250 million conversations, Jaiswal says.
The app differs from typical online marketplaces. It limits the number of buying choices. Rather than offering many similar products as the supermarkets do, Niki presents a few quality - controlled objects from providers. That is more like a la sore.
When users speak to Niki in their native language, the app speaks back in the way of neighborhood shopkeeper. This “culture of service” is popular with many Indian people.

Instead of burying your face in textbooks, newspapers, magazines and novels, you could find that the e-book readers(电子阅读器)fit all in one.
An e-book reader is a new device(装置)which can hold thousands of text files(文本文档)and display them as real text printed on a paper page. Sony and iRex Technologies are among the first to produce and sell e-book readers. The new device is expected to hit(冲击)stores this month.
In the same way that the iPod had changed the way people enjoy music, e-book readers could change the way that books are both bought and read.
The size of an e-book reader is the same as that of real books. Its screen is different from that of a computer. It is as thin as a piece of paper. The words on the e-book’s screen look exactly the same as words on real pages. But you can do more with an e-book reader than you can with an ordinary book. The reader can change the size of words and connect with the Internet to download new books.
The Sony Reader is also expected to have a function that makes you play MP3 music while you are reading.
Book publishers have begun to produce books that can be bought and downloaded to the new e-book devices. One of the publishers has already changed more than 3, 000 of different kinds of books into the digital format(数码格式). And there are already large numbers of books and stories on the devices.

Now, a similar technology, known as facial detection (探测), is entering a new field: the business of advertising (广告).
Such systems are going through tests in a small number of stores. One facial detection system can judge (判断) a person’s “happiness” or “fear” level. Another system can detect whether someone is wearing eyeglasses. If so, stores can send advertisements for new glasses to him.
Facial detection technology is also placed inside some large advertising boards. Cameras in those boards can detect (探测) information like people’s ages and five levels of feelings-from “very happy” to “very unhappy”.
Supporters of the technology say it could improve buyers’ experience by showing products they might like or by offering them products at lower prices.
Some are against the idea of using such systems. Pam Dixon, the head of a privacy (隐私) group, is one of them. She thinks the strange actions may cause something unfair. For example, a store could raise the price of a product according to a person’s age and feelings.
However, one store testing the technology explained people’s information like names or ages wouldn’t be stored. And the advertising board system maker said it didn’t keep any personal information or record any videos.

Some rode in school buses called “kid hacks.” Kid hacks were wooden horse-drawn carriages(马车). It had two long bench seats(长椅) with little space in the middle for people to pass. The carriages had a cover on the top to keep people from the strong sunshine. But they were open on the sides, so kids might still get wet on rainy days!
By the mid-1920s, more cars were on the roads, and some transport companies started to make buses out of steel. But buses still looked different from place to place.
That changed in 1939, when transportation officials(官员) from around the country met to come up with a set of standards for school buses. They wanted to make buses safer. Besides, if all school buses looked alike(相像), it would be easier for factories to build them quickly and more conveniently.
During the seven-day meeting, they also discussed about the color of the school bus. After trying 50 kinds of color on the wall, they settled on the orange-yellow. And that’s still what you see on buses today. National School Bus Glossy Yellow, as the color is officially(官方地) called, has advantages. The color was chosen because studies had shown yellow was the most eye-catching to human beings. What’s more, this kind of color could be seen clearly in the morning and evening light when school buses usually worked.
So the next time you step onto a school bus, you can feel good knowing that your ride now is much safer and drier than it would have been 100 years ago!

When was the last time that you dialed (拨) a phone number from memory? It probably depends on how long you’ve used technology like a cellphone. It seems that teenagers have never had to remember any telephone numbers. Smartphones offer quick and easy ways for keeping information. There is no need to memorize anything. But this isn’t without bad results.
As smartphones develop more and more, users’ heavily depending on them may cause terrible results. “Digital dementia”, is the words used by experts to describe some of these results. Some doctors like Jim, an expert in memory improvement, are taking a closer look at this result. Jim describes digital dementia like this, “... we’re offering our brains to our smart devices.” He continues, “We’re depending on our smartphones so heavily that our smartphones are making us stupid.” As medical studies show the drop in memory and learning skills among smartphone users, a connection is made between symptoms (症状) which are connected with dementia.
The seriousness of overuse becomes clear when you consider just how young smartphone users are becoming. Writer and speaker Simon points out that young minds “Are not ready for it! Their minds cannot deal with the problems”. So, smartphone screens and sounds lead to addiction (成瘾) more often than not. So now parents, teachers and managers should try to deal with the young people with this kind of addiction.
In fact, smartphones aren’t all bad. They’re really easy to use, and the connectivity (连接性) they create cannot be thought wrong. The key is finding out how to make a balance (平衡) between usage and uselessness. We should control our cellphone use, making sure when and where we can use cellphones.
