People have talked about whether aliens(from another planet)have been to the Earth or not for thousands of years. Some pictures drawn over 50,000 years ago are thought to be the first pictures of spacecrafts. Alien spaceships are often called flying saucers(飞碟). The first person to use this name an American, Kenneth Arnold. On 24th June, 1947, he was flying a small plane in Washington State in the USA when he saw something strange. “I was looking out of the window, when I saw nine saucer—like things in front of me,” Arnold said.
Two other Americans, Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker, said that aliens took them into a flying saucer while they were fishing to the Mississippi River on the night of 11th October, 1973. It was a dark night. The two men were sitting in their fishing boat when they saw a bright light. It was hanging in the air over the water and it looked like a flying saucer. It pulled Hickson and Parjer into their spacecraft. In the spacecraft the aliens had a close look at the two men and then sent them back to their boat. “The aliens were in a pale colour and had very small eyes,” Hickson said. “But they didn’t hurt us.”
In 1983, Pioneer 10, an American spacecraft, went into space. On the outside of the spacecraft are 13 pictures of men and women and a map of space. If aliens find Pioneer 10, they will know how to get to the Earth.
1. What were Charles and Calvin doing when then met aliens?2. How did Kenneth feel when he saw the sauce—like things?
3. Will you be afraid if you meet aliens? Why or why not?

The Spirit of Giving
Terry Crossman is an American who lives in Beijing now. He is 64 years old and he is retired (退休). He has lived in Beijing for 24 years. Now he spends some of his time volunteering to help tourists find their way around the beautiful area of Xicheng District in Beijing. He can even give people directions in fluent (流利的) Chinese.
Things were not easy for him when he started volunteering in March 2017, since he was unfamiliar (不熟悉) with the neighborhood. At first, he walked around for a long time until he could give right directions. And he worked harder to study Chinese every night.
Being a foreigner speaking fluent Chinese and the only male in the volunteer group called “Aunties from Xicheng District”, Terry has been famous on the Internet. He has attracted many tourists who come just to take a photo with him. Some people ask him for directions, and a lot of time he is asked to take photos.
He says. “The spirit of volunteering is you get more than what you give in a way. I love volunteering because I love doing things for people. I also want to make people happy.” He thinks it’s like throwing a stone into the river and then you have little waves. Then happiness can be given to other people.
Volunteering is a sure sign of an advanced and civilized society. According to a survey, there are over 129,000 community voluntary groups, 10.72 million volunteers like Crossman. They have volunteered for 23.88 million hours. Volunteers are serving the world beyond borders (国界).

A vlogger is someone who makes and posts short videos on the Internet. Vloggers may share their opinions, interests and experiences with people to learn something or just watch for fun.
Chen Qiqi, from Deyang in Sichuan, is working as a plant science vlogger. In her account (账号) on Douyin, more than 100 videos explain different kinds of plants and they help her get 1, 000, 000 followers there.
Her love for plants can be easily seen in her well-prepared videos. They showed the beauty of each plant and the fun topics are welcomed— plants that can be used to wash hair, flowers that carry special meanings or fruits that taste good in childhood memories.
Chen surprised people last year by showing how to use red peppers to make lipstick (口红). The video had over 4, 000, 000 views on Douyin. In the video, Chen shared her real-time experience. Her followers asked if she could feel the spiciness (辛辣). “To be frank, I can feel it on my lips!” Chen said laughingly.
It usually takes Chen three to four days to make a mid-length video. She says the most difficult part is researching because she needs to check every piece of information many times. “I need to read a large number of books and double check everything I want to use in my videos on different websites,” Chen says. “Sometimes I also ask university teachers for advice.”
Speaking of her future plans, Chen says she wants to go on exploring the world of plants. “My job is valuable when people say they fall in love with those plants because of me,” Chen says. “I’d like to show the interesting side of plants. He just couldn’t refuse. His mother always told him, “Mike, you shouldn’t eat so many sweets. You will get toothaches.” His mother used to keep all the sweets in a glass jar. It had a narrow (狭窄的) mouth and a tight lid on it.
One day when his mother went to the market, Mike saw that his father was asleep. So he walked carefully and slowly to the kitchen and got the sweet jar (罐子). With great effort, he opened the tight lid and put his hand in the narrow mouth. Mike picked a fist (拳头) full of sweets. But when he tried to pull his hand out, it got stuck (卡) in the jar.
Mike’s father was awake and watching. He said to Mike, “You have picked up too many sweets in your fist. It’s more than your little hand can keep. Your fist cannot come out of the jar. Let go off the sweets and pick only one sweet in your two fingers and you can pull your hand out easily. Always take as much as you can control.”
Mike pulled out his hand from the jar easily and he learned a lesson for his life, too.

Peter was a carpenter of our village. Once I asked him to make a dining table for my wife. He made it just the right size to fill the space between the two windows. When I arrived home that evening, Peter was drinking a cup of tea and writing out his bill for his work.
My wife said to me, quietly, “That’s his ninth cup of tea today.” But she said loudly, “It’s a beautiful table, dear, isn’t it?”
“I won’t decide about that until I see that bill.” I said.
Peter laughed and gave me his bill for the work. It said:
BILL One dining table June 10, 2016 Cost of wood 27.00 Paint 5.50 Work, 8 hours (2 an hour) 16.00 Total 58.50 |
When I was looking at the bill, Peter said, “It’s been a fine day, hasn’t it? Quite sunny.”
“Yes,” I said. “I’m glad it is only the 10th of June.”
“Me too,” said Peter. “You wait—it’ll be a bit hotter by the end of the month.”
“Yes. Hotter and more expensive. Dining tables will be 20 more expensive on June 30th, won’t they, Peter?”
Peter looked hard at me for half a minute. There was a little smile in his two blue eyes. I gave his bill back to him.

My two little daughters and I usually go out and help others on Thankful Thursday. Last Thursday, we were going to buy lunch for the beggars in the street. Then we went to the nearest McDonald’s(麦当劳). I ordered 15 lunches from it and drove my car to hand them out.
We gave the lunches to the beggars. They were excited. We were happy to see that.
Then we noticed a small, old woman, asking for pocket money. We gave her our last lunch bag. Before we got into the car, she started to speak to us. “No one did anything like this for me before,” she said with a smile. “Well, I’m glad that we were the first,” I answered. “So, when will you eat your lunch?” I asked.
She just looked at me with her big tired brown eyes and said, “Oh, dear, I’m not going to eat this lunch. You see, I have a little daughter of my own. I usually can’t buy her favorite food. But today she will be so happy!”
I didn’t know if the kids noticed the tears in my eyes. I have asked many times whether our actions of kindness were too small to change anything. Yet at that moment, I realized(意识到) the truth of the words: We cannot do great things—only small things with great love.
