The traditional Chinese Longtaitou Festival, or Dragon-Head-Raising Festival, is on the second day of the second lunar(农历的) month every year, and shows the start of spring and farming. This year it is on February 24.
Ancient people believed that after this day, rainfall(降雨量) increases because the Dragon King has woken from his winter sleep. A well-known phrase goes. “Er yue er, long tai tou,” meaning, “On the second day of the second month, the dragon raises his head.”
The most famous tradition on this day is getting a haircut. People believe that it can help throw away bad luck.
During the festival, foods are quite special. People eat chengyao cakes, made with rice, during the festival in Suzhou, where a saying goes, “If you cat chengyao on Longtaitou, your waist(腰) won’t hurt all year.”
At the same time, other foods, like noodles, dumplings, and popcorn, get their names from dragon body parts. Noodles are dragon’s beard (long xu), dumplings are dragon’s ears (long er), and popcorn dragon seeds (long zi).

They can have different colors and shapes. They can be both red or green, round or sharp, big or small, and more importantly, loved or hated by someone. What can they be? Right, the answer is chilies (辣椒).
Many of us in China enjoy adding chilies to our food, but do you know that this spicy (辣的) vegetable could also be very dangerous? A 34-year-old US man lost his life in hospital after eating a Carolina Reaper, the spiciest chili. After taking just one bite, the man began to get serious headaches in the following days, reported by BBC News.
In fact, eating spicy food causes stomachache and headache. But if chilies are harmful, why do people eat this vegetable? What makes people love chilies so much? The human body is influenced (影响) by natural chemicals (化学物质) that produce “a sense of happiness”. That means chili makes them happy.
And chilies do good to people in another way. A study shows that the death rate (率) of those who eat spicy food once or twice a week is 10 percent lower than those who eat it less than once a week. The death rate is 14 percent lower for those who eat spicy food six to seven times a week. This makes people eat more spicy food to make their health better. So don’t worry if you love spicy food. Dads have Father’s Day. Moms have Mother’s Day. Kids have Children’s Day. Do our grandparents have a special holiday? Yes, they do!
The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for elderly people in China. The festival is on the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar (农历的) calendar. As the Chinese word for nine has the same sound as the word for long, people take the Double Ninth Festival to show their wishes of long life for elderly people. This year it falls on October 23rd.
There are many traditions for this festival. On that day, families get together and climb mountains for luck and in the hope that elderly people will live much longer. They also drink chrysanthemum wine (菊花酒) and wear a plant called “zhuyu” to celebrate it . Both chrysanthemum and “zhuyu” are considered as clean plants that can clean houses and treat (治疗) diseases.
It is a traditional virtue (美德) in China to respect elderly people. Respecting elderly people is shown not only on this special day but also in daily life. For example, when an older person enters a room, everyone stands up. When there are several guests at the table, the host usually introduces them from the oldest to the youngest. When a younger person is presenting something to an older person, two hands are used. On a crowded subway or bus, younger people always offer their seats to elderly people. “May we all be blessed with longevity. Though miles apart, we are still able to share the beauty of the moon together (但愿人长久,千里共婵娟),” wrote Su Shi, a poet during the Song Dynasty, in his well-known poem to his younger brother Su Zhe.
The moon is at its brightest on the 15thday of the eight month of the lunar calendar. On this day, people celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. It has been enjoying great popularity all over the country.
In ancient China, that day was a harvest festival because crops (庄稼) were harvested during that period. It was also a time for relaxation and celebration.
Just like Thanksgiving in Western countries, families also try to get together for the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy they are, people will try to return home for the celebration.
The Mid-Autumn Festival has its own special food. People eat mooncakes with fillings such as sugar and eggs. The round shape of the cake makes it look like the full moon. The full moon and mooncakes stand for family reunion (团聚).
With the beautiful moon up in the sky, people sit together, enjoy the full moon, eat mooncakes and fruits, share the stories, and express the best wishes to the family members and friends who live far away.
