Do you always focus on studying and getting “A” grades in school? Most Chinese students work really hard. But in the United States, you might be considered a bookworm (书呆子) if you cannot socialize (社交). Socializing is as important as your grades. If you just study all the time and don’t socialize, your life won’t be complete. So, how does one socialize with students in the US?
Lots of high schools often have soccer games during the autumn term. I didn’t know anything about soccer, but I joined some of the soccer games in order to have fun with my friends. I thought I could learn the rules from others. However, to my surprise, some American students don’t even know the rules but still go to the games in order to socialize. They cheer for the soccer players and have fun together.
The other common way to socialize is to join after-school clubs. You can choose clubs that you are interested in and make a lot of new friends. For example, one of my friends started a sketch (素描) club. I was interested, so I joined the club. There I met lots of students who were also interested in sketching. We soon became friends with each other. Socializing is an important thing in the US. But grades are still important, too. A complete student should have the ability to balance (平衡) his or her studying and socializing.

We take off our school uniforms and wear sports shoes. Though we still have classes, everyone should go to play sports too. After lunchtime, we run to the stadium (体育馆) together.
The stadium has two parts, indoor and outdoor. Because of the changing weather in summer, we usually use the indoor part. We can play basketball, badminton (羽毛球), table tennis and other ball games. There is professional equipment (专业器材) such as scoreboards (计分板) and nets. However, we don’t really use those things. When we have a test, teachers use them to keep the scores.
My friends and I like playing basketball most. We enjoy our time playing together. Sometimes our teachers join us too. It’s different from playing in competitions. We often play sports just for fun. We learn how interesting sports can be. And we take the time to relax. Most importantly, sports make us healthy and strong.

How are you these days?
The Eighth Student Art Festival starts in our middle school. Today is the first day. There is a photo show (展览). Students take many photos. All of them are great. I love one of the photos very much. It is a photo of a big family. It’s named (命名) “Happy Birthday, Grandma!” I think this student must have a happy family, just like us. In the next two weeks, we have other fun things—the talent (才艺) show, the Chinese painting show and the DIY show. The talent show is on the afternoon of December 19th. My classmate David and I will play the piano. Our parents will come and watch the show. I hope we can do well. Do you have time? Please come and watch our show. And ask Cindy to come with you. I miss her very much.
Yours,
Tina
