Each year several thousand people are killed on the road in Great Britain. Every year between one and two hundred thousand people are injured, or killed in road accidents.

If you are in England and if you listen to the eight o’clock news from BBC, you will often hear news of road accidents. You may hear something like this: “On last Monday evening, at about twenty minutes to ten, a cyclist was knocked down by a truck at crossing of Oak Road and High Street in Croydon. The cyclist had died from his injuries. Anyone who saw the accident please communicate with New Scotland Yard, telephone number Whitehall one, two, one, two.”

Accidents are often caused by carelessness. If everybody obeys the rules, the roads will be much safer. How can we make the road safer?

In Great Britain traffic keeps on to the left. Motor-cars, trucks, buses and cyclists must all keep to the left side of the road. In most other countries traffic keeps to the right.

Before crossing the road, stop and look both ways. Look right, look left, look right again. Then, if you are sure that the road is clear, and there is nothing coming, it is safe to cross the road. If you see small children, or very old people, or blind people waiting to cross the road, it is kind to help them to cross the road in safety.

We must teach young children to cross the road safely and set them a good example so that there will be fewer and fewer accidents and our life will be safer.

Last week was Road Safety Week at Jim’s school. All the students had to take part in a talk on road safety which was given by a police officer. The following is what the police officer said.

“Most traffic accidents shouldn’t happen. They happen because people are careless. A usual cause of traffic accidents is speed. Some people drive too quickly. You need to remember this when you are crossing the street or walking along the sidewalk, or you will be hurt, even lose your life.”

“It’s not only drivers who cause accidents but also walkers, and bicycle riders often cause accidents, too. Walkers sometimes walk out into the street without looking. You should always look on both sides before stepping into the street.”

“Do any of you ride a bike? Bicycle riders can cause accidents by changing directions suddenly or without warning other road users. Before you turn left, for example, you should check behind you to make sure there aren’t any cars, trucks or buses coming. You should show with your left hand to tell that you want to turn left. You should not turn until the street is clear.”

Road accidents keep happening in every city, on every road and at any time. Traffic rules are made to keep order on the road. They can also help to keep the pedestrians(行人) safe.

The pedestrian has as many rules to follow as the driver of a car. You should walk on the sidewalk or at the edge of the road. Always look carefully before you walk across the street. If you ride a bike, don’t ride in the middle of the road or look around to talk. If you drive, you should slow down at the traffic lights. You must always wear a seat belt(安全带). Without the belts, both the driver and the passengers may be badly hurt in a sudden accident.

Traffic rules are also called Road Safety rules. The maxim(格言) for all road users is “Thinking about others.”

One day, you open the fridge and find some moldy(发霉的) food. But before you can throw it away, your mother stops you. She doesn’t want to waste food. She cuts off the moldy part and eats the rest. Is it safe to do this?

Mold(霉菌) can grow on almost all kinds of food. Mold is usually green, white, black or gray. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Moldy food tastes quite bad—and it’s not safe to eat.

If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Bread, tomatoes and hot dogs are soft food. This kind of food allows mold to easily grow below its surface.

But it’s easy to remove mold from hard food. The mold can’t grow very deeply inside this kind of food. According to the BBC, you should cut about 2.5 cm around and below the mold and remove it. It’s OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is completely covered with mold, you should still throw it away.

Most kinds of mold are bad for us. But some kinds of mold can be used to make food. For example, penicillium(青霉菌) can be used to make many types of cheeses, such as blue cheese. These cheeses are safe to eat and they’re quite delicious as well.
