In Britain you may often hear “Drop in any time” or “Come to see me soon”, but you can’t really do that. People just say those things to make you feel welcome. It is better to telephone before visiting someone at home. If you receive a written invitation to an event that says “RSVP”. You should reply to let the person who sent the invitation know whether or not you plan to go.

You should never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may refuse by saying, “Thank you for inviting me, but I will not be able to come.” If, after accepting, you are unable to go, be sure to tell those who are expecting you as soon as possible that you will not be there.

Though it is not necessarily expected that you give a gift to your host, it is considered polite to do so, especially if you have been invited for a meal. Flowers, chocolate, or a small gift are all appropriate(合适的). A thank-you note or telephone call after the visit is also considered polite and is an appropriate way to express your appreciation for the invitation.

【推荐1】Texting while driving is against the law in 47 states. But what about texting while walking? A 2018 study reported that more than 2, 500 people in the US ended up in hospitals resulting from using a mobile device(设备) while walking.

Hawaii passed a law making it illegal to text or look down at a mobile device while crossing the street. It is the first state with a law like this. Do people think more places should accept such a law? The LA Times did a survey. Here are some replies they received.

Rena Jose, 2, New York

Which is more important, texting or safety? If you are looking at your phone while walking, you might not see a car come or traffic lights turn red. It can be very dangerous. For example, in Japan, one person fell into a lake and another got her leg stuck in a hole, because both had their mind on their phone. We should make texting while crossing the street illegal in more cities.

Andy Selvam, 55, California

People do many things that cause injury to themselves but are not illegal, such as climbing mountains, driving cars, swimming and so on. People might get hurt from texting and walking if they’re not paying attention. But I still think they should have a choice.

Bob Madigan, 45, Oregon

As humans, we can make our own decisions. I’m not saying it’s safe, but we don’t need the government to babysit us. If we want to learn to make smart decisions, the government needs to stop telling us what to do. After all, this is a free country.

Andrew Black, 34, Alaska

This law is a good idea—compare this protection with seat belts. If this law is passed all over US, people will be worried. But is there really a way to please everyone? This would not be for fun. It would be safe and good for all Americans.

You see people in movies celebrating a white Christmas in England or the United States. But Christmas in Australia is different.

The holiday, celebrated on Dec 25th, comes at the hottest time of the year in Australia. The temperature is usually about 30°C in most cities and can even be over 40°C. There is certainly no white Christmas in Australia.

When I first came to Australia on December 24th last year, I was so curious (好奇的 ) about how people here would celebrate this festival. It was so hot, so many Australians would swim together in the pool or beach. Most people had a one-week holiday during this time, so my friends told me that they would travel to meet their family for Christmas lunch at home. I was also invited to their big Christmas party. The Christmas lunch was usually a big meal of ham, turkey, salad and fresh seafood. Family members all cooked something different to bring to the big meal. I prepared some delicious cookies there to enjoy together. My friend’s aunt even made a delicious gingerbread house (姜饼屋) that we ate for dessert.

On Christmas in Australia, children get presents from Santa Claus and are always excited to play with them. Of course, Santa Claus doesn’t choose the sleigh (雪橇) to send gifts because of the hot weather. It is also a fun time to play or swim in the pool with the other members. I enjoyed playing cricket with my friends in the backyard, which is another tradition for Christmas. The Christmas in Australia is really so different and exciting!

1. In which season do people in Australia celebrate Christmas ?
A.Spring.B.Summer.C.Autumn.D.Winter.
2. Which is NOT the tradition in Australia for Christmas?
A.Making a snowman.B.Having a lunch together.
C.Swimming in the pool.D.Playing cricket with friends.
3. What can we learn about Christmas in Australia?
A.Australians would go to restaurants to have Christmas dinner.
B.Santa Claus usually takes the sleigh to send gifts to children.
C.People in Australia don’t get together during Christmas.
D.Special weather makes Christmas in Australia different.
