Taking care of pets can be a great way to teach children responsibility. If you’re interested in bringing an animal into your home and you’ve designed a plan for its proper care, here are some choices.

FISH

First-time owners should consider getting cold-water fish as no tank heater is required. They should research what kinds of fish get along in the same tank, and know that some goldfish can live up to 20 years.

RABBITS

Though rabbits may seem like a lovely choice, they can live up to ten years and require much care similar to that of a dog or cat. They have their special diet needs, and often don’t behave well around small children.

GUINEA PIGS

These small animals are suitable for starter pets. Their cages must be cleaned daily, and they require toys to keep their ever growing teeth in check. Once they’re used to the new way of life, guinea pigs need daily exercise in a small room without holes for escape.

BIRDS

Birds require feeding at the same time each day. Cages should be cleaned daily and disinfected weekly. Birds clean themselves by bathing in dishes of water and grow in cages big enough to spread their wings and fly a short time.

Quilts have a long history in different places. In Asia, the quilt appeared in the first century BC.     2     From then on, people in Europe wore quilted (夹层的) clothing under their heavy coats to keep warm.

Bed quilts had something to do with women in American history. When the earliest people in Europe came to America, there were few or no stores.     3     During the 1700s and 1800s, women made quilts. Quilting kept families from living in the cold environment. Women met at parties to help each other finish making quilts.

4     Some stories said that slaves (奴隶) put information into their quilts to show other slaves the way to freedom (自由).

Quilts are also a form of art. Every quilt is a way for the artist to show himself or herself. Each one uses different designs (设计图样) and colors. Each one also uses different skills for sewing the pieces together.     5     Later, people added some pictures, such as birds or flowers.

【推荐2】A butterfly is an insect(昆虫)with a thin body and four wings. Its front wings are big and its back wings are small. Most butterflies fly during the day. When a butterfly rests, it holds its wings up toward the sky. Most butterflies have brightly colored wings.

A moth looks like a butterfly. It also has two big front wings and two small back wings. Moths eat plants as most butterflies do. But there are also some differences between them. The body of a moth is often wider(更宽的)than the body of a butterfly. Most moths fly at night. When a moth rests, it makes its wings out. The wings of most moths do not have bright colors.

The life cycles of a butterfly and a moth are similar. However, their eggs are different in size and color. Some are so small that you can't see them. Most of their eggs are green or yellow. Some are red or orange. Butterflies and moths always lay their eggs on the plants which they like to eat. They want to make sure that when their babies are hatched(孵化), they will have food to eat. When the eggs are hatched, the moth or the butterfly caterpillars(毛虫)come out. Caterpillars can be almost any color. There are three pairs of legs near the front of their bodies. Caterpillars eat all the time. Most butterfly and moth caterpillars eat green plants. They can make cocoons(茧). These caterpillars grow inside their cocoons. After a period of time, they will become butterflies or moths.

【推荐3】Food for thought?

VEGANS

Vegans are vegetarians: they don’t eat fish or meat. However, most vegetarians eat eggs, cheese and other dairy products, but vegans don’t. In fact, they don’t eat any food from animals — eggs and honey, for example. Why do people become vegans? Usually, they believe that it’s wrong to kill animals for food or keep them for milk, eggs, and other products. They also believe that keeping animals is bad for the environment because it needs a lot of space. A small farm with animals can produce food for 20 people; but use the same land for vegetables and it can feed 240 people. Farm animals are also bad for the environment because they need a lot of water.

FRUITARIANS

Fruitarians are vegans: they don’t eat meat, fish or any other animal products. But there are other rules too. Fruitarians don’t cook their food and they don’t eat any vegetables, rice, bread or processed food. So what can they eat? Well, nuts(坚果) and seeds are OK. They can eat sweet fruit, like bananas and apples, and also olives, peppers and tomatoes because these are fruit too. Some people are fruitarians because they believe it is healthy. However, most doctors believe that fruitarians do not have a balanced diet(饮食). The human body needs something which isn’t in fruit or nuts.
