Our world is in danger. We must do something to protect the environment. But (A) ________ are the main problems we face?
The greenhouse effect
The atmosphere around the Earth is necessary for all living things. It is like the glass of a greenhouse, letting sunlight in and (B)keeping heat from getting out. Without it, the Earth would be the same (C) ________ the Moon-cold and lifeless.
When we burn fuels such as petrol and coal, we produce a gas called carbon dioxide (CO2). (D)Too much of this gas pollutes the atmosphere, and causes it to keep in too much heat. As a result of the greenhouse effect, the Earth’s temperature is increasing. This causes sea level to rise, and in the future may cause cities to disappear.
Cutting down forests
Every year, we destroy nature by cutting down huge areas of forests. This makes the greenhouse effect worse (E)因为树吸收二氧化碳 and produce oxygen. Cutting down trees also destroys the homes of the animals that live in our forests, and causes the surface of the soil to be easily destroyed by rain. This can (F)result in floods and even more damage to the environment.

One fresh sunny day, while I was swimming in the water, I felt something special going through my gills(鳃). It was a different kind of water. I also found many of my friends became sick. Some of them were dying. I was starting to worry because I didn’t want to get sick or die. I was also thinking about what I should do to save my friends, so I decided to do some research for my underwater life.
Then it started. At first, I noticed there were many bottles, cans and other kinds of rubbish in the water. I got closer and soon I tasted many different kinds of liquid(液体). Then I saw a man standing by the water. He was pouring(倾倒) some liquid into the water. I hated it! I wish I could have told him that it was killing us!
I think it is so stupid for people to do this to the earth that they are living on! I can’t understand why they are doing this. Humans should stop throwing waste into the lakes or rivers. I want to have a normal life with my friends. People should care about the environment. If they do that, everyone will be fine and will have nothing to worry about. In this way, we can live happily. Do you agree with me?

In fact, the Philippines is one of the world’s most deforested (滥伐的) countries with total forest cover dropping from 70% to just 20% during the 20th century. Luckily, a new law may help the country to solve the problem because it requires students to plant at least 10 trees each before they graduate.
Congressman (国会议员) Gary Alejano introduced the bill (议案) first and later the Philippine Congress passed it. The bill states that this requirement applies to (适用于) all students in order to graduate from primary school, high school and college. If the students want to graduate, each of them must plant no fewer than 10 trees. Every year, there are over 12 million students graduating from primary school, nearly 5 million students graduating from high school and almost 500, 000 students graduating from college in this country. If the law is carried out properly and completely, at least 175 million new trees will be planted each year. “Even if only 10% of all the planted trees are able to stay alive, it will still result in 525 million trees in the course of one generation (一代人).”
Mr. Alejano points out this law will do more than help make our earth a greener place. His main goal is to help bring environmental understanding to future generations.

If you are in Shanghai and want to throw a cup of milk tea, be careful. You need to follow these steps: first, pour out any leftover( 残留物) into a wet waste bin; second, put the paper wrapper into a recyclable waste bin; finally, throw the single-use cup and straw(吸管) into a dry waste bin.
Sound complex( 复 杂 的 ) ? You’ll have to get used to it. From July 1st,2019 on, people in Shanghai are required to sort(将…..分类) their garbage(垃圾) according to strict rules. Garbage is divided into wet garbage, toxic( 有 毒 的 )garbage and recyclable garbage. Many other cities in China are planning to create similar sorting rules.
Why should we sort our garbage? The answer lies in the increasing amount of waste we are producing. Chinese cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year, according to China Economic Net. Most of this waste is buried in landfills, which may pollute water and soil. Moreover, we are running out of space for new landfills.
In fact, more than half of our waste can be recycled. Recyclable garbage can be made into new materials, while wet garbage can be used to make gas, heat and fertilizer(肥料). But in order to recycle efficiently(有效地), we need to sort our garbage.
Can't garbage-processing companies do the sorting job for us? They can. But that requires a lot of work and costs lots of money. Things will become much easier if each of us can sort our own garbage. Besides, the troublesome task of sorting might encourage people to produce less waste. Do you still want to buy that milk tea?
1. How many steps should we follow to throw away a cup of milk tea in Shanghai?2. When are people in Shanghai required to sort their garbage?

But all those plastic (塑料) bottles use a lot of oil and pollute the environment. Americans buy more bottled water than any other nation in the world with 29 billion water bottles a year. To make all these bottles, 17 million barrels (桶) of oil will be used up. That’s enough oil to keep million cars going for twelve months.
Most people choose to throw the bottles away after having the bottled drinks. In fact, instead of going out with the trash, plastic bottles can be turned into carpeting or clothing. Remember this: Recycling one plastic bottle can save enough energy to power a 60-watt (瓦特) light bulb (灯泡) for six hours.
Unfortunately, for every six water bottles we use, only one is made recycling. The rest are sent as garbage. Or, even worse, they end up as trash on the land or in rivers, lakes, and oceans. Plastic bottles take many hundreds of years to disintegrate (分解).
So why don’t more people drink water from the kitchen? Some people drink bottled water because they think it is better for them, but that’s not true. The chemicals in the bottles themselves may get into the water which can do harm to people.
So next time when you have drinks or water, please try to use a glass at home or carry water in a steel bottle. And if you want to do something more, try to collect plastic bottles and send them for recycling.
Answer the questions according to the passage.
1. What are plastic bottles made from?
2. How many bottles of water do Americans buy every year?
3. What can recycling a plastic bottle do?
4. How long does it take to disintegrate plastic bottles?
5. Is bottled water better for us?
Oceans of Plastic: Time for Action
Plastic is useful. It’s in a lot of things we use every day, from clothes to pens, and bottles to toys. But there’s a problem. Most plastic is not biodegradable (可生物降解的), and a lot of it ends up in our oceans.
How big is the problem?
There are billions of bits of plastic in the world’s oceans! Every ocean and every beach has plastic, from large objects to tiny pieces called microplastics. Tons of plastic enter the ocean every year. Increasing like this, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans!
How does plastic harm animals?
Fish, sea turtles, and birds think plastic is food, and they eat it. The plastic stays in their stomachs. Dead seabirds are found with stomachs full of plastic. Whales, dolphins, and seals are caught by plastic bags or fishing nets. It’s said that millions of ocean animals die each year because of plastic rubbish in oceans around the world.
Is there any good news?
Yes! Scientists, schools, businesses, and people are taking action. In some countries, plastic bags aren’t allowed to use. Scientists are developing new biodegradable plastics. Many communities are trying to use less plastic and recycle more. Kids are playing their part, such as working to make their schools “zero plastic”.
What can you do?
Don’t use plastic bags.
Don’t buy plastic bottles.
...
One person can’t solve the problem alone, but together we will make a difference.

Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious(严重的)because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all the living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal(煤)in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in population at the same time.

For most people a picnic is a meal they eat outside the home, usually in a park, by a river, or even sitting in a car if the weather is cold and wet. At one time, however, people had picnics at home at their own dinner tables.
The word picnic comes from the French words piquer which means" to pick" or" take” and pique-nipue which means “a small coin". Everyone who came to a picnic brought something to eat. They took or picked small pieces of food from each plate. They had a pique-nique. This kind of meal was popular in Britain.
