New research shows that office workers and other people who sit a lot must exercise for one hour a day. If they do that, they will increase their chances of living longer. Doctors have been telling us for a long time that sitting all day will shorten(缩短)our life.
Researchers now say that sitting in a chair all day is as dangerous as smoking or being overweight to our health. Research on over one million adults found that sitting for at least eight hours a day could increase the risk of dying early by up to 60 percent. However, there is good news for those who sit at a desk all day. An hour’s “brisk(轻快的)exercise” each day can cancel out(抵消)the risk of an early death linked to(与……有关联)sitting all day.
The research was published in time for people to read before the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Researchers hope this will encourage people to exercise more. They said being inactive increases the risk of getting heart disease, diabetes(糖尿病)and cancer. Watching TV all day is one of the worst things, because this means we get no exercise and are likely to eat unhealthy snacks. One researcher said office workers should find opportunities to get out of their seat more often. Professor UIf Eklund advised people to take a five-minute break every hour—go to the next office, go upstairs to the coffee machine or go to the printer. He added, “Build physical activity into your everyday life.”

【推荐3】If you like chocolate, you’re not alone. Millions of people around the world say they can’t live without chocolate. But have you wondered if chocolate is bad for your health? Let’s separate the truth from the facts about this popular food.
Chocolate makes you happy
There are over three hundred chemicals in chocolate, which make your brain active and help you feel happy. For example, the obromine (可可碱) can help produce feelings of happiness and make you feel less stressed. The caffeine (咖啡因) in chocolate can give you more energy and is also found in coffee and tea.
Chocolate makes you fat
Chocolate is commonly seen as a kind of fattening food. In fact, cocoa beans are full of antioxidants (抗氧化剂) that are good for health. However, a lot of antioxidants are removed during the process to clear up their bitterness (苦味). Most store-bought chocolates have high sugar and fat, and only a little cocoa. Eating these and other high-fat chocolate desserts, like cakes and cookies, can really increase your weight.
Chocolate causes bad teeth
It’s not chocolate itself that causes bad teeth, but the sugar in chocolate products and bad teeth-brushing habits! In fact, it’s believed that cocoa butter forms a coating over our teeth, and this might actually protect rather than hurt them.
As with most things, chocolate only becomes a danger when you eat it too much. It’s important to remember that most of the advantages of chocolate come from cocoa. That’s why dark chocolate is the healthiest choice. So choose your chocolate wisely, eat it properly, and you’ll get the best of both happiness and health.

People call Qin the “King of Breaststroke (蛙泳)” for his breaststroke achievements (成就) in 2023. He won all 23 gold medals (金牌) in breaststroke in the big competitions he took part in. At the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, the 24-year-old player became the first swimmer in history to win all three breaststroke golds at the event.
Breaststroke is not easy. It’s harder to swim fast because all the strokes (划水) in breaststroke happen under the water. This makes the water push back on the swimmer more, and it takes a lot of skills to swim well. “Even a small change in how you move your hands can make you swim faster or slower,” Qin said to Jimu News. “Some people say I’m fast because I save energy (能量) by using fewer strokes. When others might take one and a half strokes, I only need one to swim as far as they do.”
Even though Qin has won many awards, he doesn’t want people to call him the “King of Breaststroke”. He is a modest person. “Just call me a breaststroke swimmer,” Qin said after winning the men’s 50m breaststroke at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Some statistics (数据) from the survey done by the European Commission (欧盟委员会) showed that 62% of the British people only speak English. 38% speak at least one foreign language and 18% speak two or more. Compared with(与……相比) the British people, 56% of the people in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more. From this you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages and that they are not good language learners in Europe.
And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language. Many European people can have a conversation in English. That’s why my people don’t think it is necessary to learn a foreign language.
In Britain, students are not required to learn a foreign language. That means learning a foreign language is only an option at school. In UK schools it is common for children to start learning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don’t students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it is more difficult to get good marks in languages than in other subjects such as science or history.
To solve this situation, the British government is looking for different ways to improve language learning at school. One way is to start learning it at a much younger age. Another one is to give school children more choices.
Changing the British attitude (态度) to learning foreign languages may be a hard task but the government decides to try!

Students often want to practice their English outside class. One of the best ways to practice your English is to speak to a foreigner. This week’s question comes from a student who is eager (渴望) to start a conversation with the foreigners he sees every day. This student asks, “Is it okay to talk to foreigners I see in the street?”
The answer is yes and no, but probably no! If you see a foreigner who looks lost, it is polite to ask them, “May I help you?” But, otherwise (否则), you should probably let them get on with their business. Situations, however, do exist (存在) where it is quite all right to talk to foreigners. For example, if a foreigner enters your school, classroom, office, shop or restaurant, you can ask them:
-What is your name?
-Where do you come from?
-What do you think of Wudi?
-How long will you stay in Wudi?
There are also situations where it’s OK to talk to foreigners in public places. If you see a foreigner alone in a restaurant, bar or coffee shop, it may be appropriate (合适的) to ask him or her:
-Is this seat free?
-Do you mind if I talk to you in English?
You can probably help them if they are new to China and if they are alone, you may be able to make them feel more welcome.
After a few such questions, you should know whether this person wants to talk to you or not. If they ask you similar questions, or if they give long, informative answers, you’re in luck. If not, then give them their privacy (独处). Talking to strangers is fun if you choose the right time and place.
