Everyone bathes in a different way. Most Americans never take a bath. They soap and rinse (冲洗) off under the shower. The English always take a bath. First, they sit in a bathtub full of warm water. Then they soap themselves, and finally they rinse off the soap, all in the same water. The Japanese on the other hand, first wash with soap in the shower. Then they go and sit in a bathtub full of warm water for twenty minutes or more. Later, others in the family use the same water to sit and relax in. The Thai (泰国人) do not get into a shower or a bathtub.

They stand in a room or an area of a house where there is a big jar (罐子) full of water.   With a bowl they pour water from the jar on themselves so that other people do not see their bodies. The Thai always wear a long piece of cloth called a pasin around their bodies. They wear this when they are bathing.

Everyone gets clean in a different way. We know that washing is good and healthy for us.   But this was not true in the past. Up to 1800, most Americans did not bathe because they thought it was bad for them.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了美国和中国送礼的不同之处和背后的文化差异。

【推荐1】If your birthday is coming, what kind of gifts would you expect? Or what will you buy for your friends’ birthdays? Mostly the giving of gifts and the culture are connected closely. Coming from the US, I have found gift-giving to be quite different in China compared to my home country. One example is the timing of when to open a gift. In the US, the person who gives the gift (let’s call them the “gifter”) will often want to see the person who gets the gift (let’s call them the “giftee”) immediately open the present. They want to see their reaction (反应) of excitement and joy. In China, however, it’s more polite to open the gifts after they come back home later.

Another aspect (方面) I’ve found different is the openness and directness of giving money. Although people in the US might give money to their children, it is usually doing very secretly with the money put in a card and not discussed out loud. In China, the practice is much more open in a flashy red envelope. Finally, the monetary value (金钱观) of the gift can play a big role in China in ways that are different from the US. An expensive gift in the US is usually greeted with great excitement. But in China, it can make the giftee feel awkward (尴尬的) due to a sense of having to return the favor (恩惠) in the future to the gifter.

So, the next time you give a gift to somebody, remember that culture and meaning are part of every action we take.

When a thought has found words

Poetry is the forgotten child of literature. Few people read it for pleasure. In Western high schools, poetry is seldom taught because it is considered to be out of date and have little to do with the life of today’s students.

In China, however, poetry is still an important part of the curriculum (课程) . Recently, the Ministry of Education has increased the number of ancient Chinese poems for students to memorize and recite, from 14 to 72. Why is it important to learn poems?

First of all, poetry is a necessary part of learning traditional Chinese culture. It is a path to understanding your history and your society. It is also the key to understanding the thoughts and feelings that are common to everyone but we may be unable to express—the joy of Li Bai dancing with the moon, for example. Everyone has feelings of joy, love, loneliness, sadness and even anger, and a good poem can help us put those feelings into words and bring us self-understanding.

Poems can also express beauty. In a few short lines, even something common can become beautiful. Here is a poem called “Fog” by Carl Sandberg: The fog comes/on silent haunches (弓腰)/and then moves on. Yes, fog does move smoothly, silently and like a cat, and Sandberg catches that feeling and image, and makes it beautiful.

Of course, to really enjoy poetry, it has to be read aloud. After all, a poem is really just a song without music. Most ancient poetry, like Homer’s Epics and China’s Book of Songs, was spoken for hundreds of years before it was written.

The American poet Robert Frost said, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” You are lucky that you now have seventy-two poems to learn!
