Baseball is one of the favorite sports in the U.S.A. Children play baseball in sports field or in parks.
At summer picnics, there is often an informal baseball game. Boys and girls, the young and the old, take turns to beat. Each team has 9 players.
The baseball season goes from April to September. During this time, baseball matches are on TV and members of the important baseball teams become America’s heroes. At the end of season, the two top teams play against each other. Many baseball fans go along to watch the game. Millions of others listen to the radio and watch television. People seem to talk only about the result and the players.
American football is perhaps the most popular sport in the U.S.A. The football season begins when the baseball season ends. More people are interested in football than baseball when there is an important game. Thousands of people sit beside the radio or in front of the television set to hear or watch the result.

Basketball is popular all over the world. But in Australia, people like to play netball(无挡板篮球), too. It is one of the most popular sports in Australia. The players are often girls. The sport is like basketball, but its rules are a little different. If a player gets the ball, she will only hold it for three seconds before shooting(投篮) or passing it to her teammates. There are seven players in each team. Each player has her own area to move in.
Girls at my school love the sport. We often had netball games this term. Something happened this month touched me deeply.
I was the defender(后卫). My job was to block the attacker(主攻手) from the other team. At the beginning, I wanted to win so much that I almost forgot my job. And it gave the other team a chance to get and pass the ball. During the break, our team leader gave me a serious talk, “If you really want to win, you should work with your teammates.”
And I did. In the second half of the game, I always stood in front of the attacker from the other team to block her sight. As a result, she missed the best time to attack. Our teammates got great long shots in. The score was 143 in the end. We won!
The game made me know the importance of teamwork and team spirit(精神). If everybody does what he or she likes and doesn't care about the whole team, the team will not work well.

They try to take it to the other end of the field. They have four chances to move the ball ten yards(码). They can carry it or throw it. If they move it to the end of the field, they receive six points. This is called a touchdown.
It is hard to move the ball. Eleven men in the team try to stop the man who has the ball. If the man does not move the ball ten yards, his team kicks the ball to the other team.
Each university wants its team to win. Thousands of people come to watch. They all yell(欢呼) for their favorite team. Young men and women called cheerleaders come on the field to help the people yell more. They dance and jump when they yell.
Each team plays ten or eleven games each season(赛季). The season begins in September and ends in November. If a team is very good, it may play another game after the season end. In his new book The Journeys of Trees, science writer Zach St. George explores an extremely slow migration, as forests move inch by inch to more pleasant places.
“The migration of n forest is just many trees sprouting(发芽) in the same direction,” St. George writes. “Through the fossils(化石) that ancient forests left behind, scientists can track(追踪) their movements over thousands of years. They move back and forth across lands, sometimes following the same route more than once, like migrating birds or whales.” This has happened over thousands of years, and climate change is likely to be the driving force. Take California for example: it’s getting hotter and dryer and scientists say that before too long. Sequoia National Park may not be able to keep “giant sequoias”—a kind of valuable ancient trees.
“The scientists there had never seen anything like it,” St. George says. “They are worried, and I think at some point we will lose these ancient trees and we will have to think about what we do with the places, and do we plant new trees where they are easy to grow?”
This is known as “assisted migration”—humans plant trees in other places where they’re more likely to grow. But this process carries risks—people can accidentally introduce insects and diseases to new places, where they may destroy the whole native populations completely. So, St. George writes, there’s a hot topic today: Should humans help the trees escape?
“There may be cases where people are probably going to step in and help trees move to places where they’ll be more suitable in the future,” St. George says. “And that is one kind of vision(构想) of the future that I hope to see.”

The Chengni inkstone first appeared during the Western Han Dynasty, but the skills of making it were lost during the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty. Thankfully, today the traditional skills have been revived (复习) with the help of Lin Yongmao and his son Lin Tao.
In 1984, Lin Yongmao began working at the museum in Xinjiang, Shanxi Province. There he read some books about the Xinjiang Chengni inkstone, and then decided to revive the lost skills.
It was easier said than done. It took the father and son two years to find proper materials to produce the Chengni inkstone. That was just the first step. After failing many times, they finally succeeded in making two Chengni inkstones in 1991. Three years later, their Chengni inkstones won a gold prize at an expo (博览会) on China’s famous inkstones.
But the father and son didn’t stop there. While improving the skills of making the Chengni inkstone, they set up a workshop in the hope of passing the skills on to young people. They also worked with universities and colleges to make the Chengni inkstone more popular. At the same time, Lin Tao has created special Chengni inkstone products and brought them to competitions at home and abroad to expand the influence of the Chengni inkstone.

Now think about how much time you spent indoors—on the Internet or playing video games or watching TV.
You may say, “I play inside more than outside and I like to play games on the computer.”
If so, it’s likely that you spent more time inside four walls than outside in fresh air. Kids today spend two fewer hours per week on sports and outdoor activities than kids did 20 years ago. That’s according to a University of Michigan study. Non-moving activities are more popular. The costs “include overweight, greater stress, higher rates of physical and emotional illness and less joy…,” says Richard Louv, writer of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder.
Play is important, even for adults.
Outdoor activity betters your senses. The next time you sit down to message your friends, take note of your senses during and after your texting. Then do the same experiment after you’ve done something outside. You will find being outdoors brings the senses to life. “Hiking, exploring, and fishing help hone all of your senses,” says Betsy Keller. She’s a professor of exercise and sports sciences at Ithaca College in New York. “Smell, sight... all of your senses are in use when you’re outside.”
Outdoor play frees your mind. Are you stressed out? Having trouble devoting your mind to what you’re doing? Too much time indoors — away from the natural world — may be a cause. Louv uses a term to describe the set of problems caused by too much time indoors: nature deficit disorder. He says, “I use it to describe the price we pay for being so separated from nature.”
Spending time outdoors brings you closer to the environment. When you’re out, breathe in fresh air, hear the leaves crackle underfoot and search cool birds and plants in the woods. It can help you feel more connected to the natural world. No woods nearby? Nature can be found right outside your back door or in your local park.
So the next time you sit down to spend quality time with a video game, consider treating yourself to a little outdoor play instead.
