What do you do in a situation like this? You’re having dinner with friends at a nice restaurant. You’re having a great time when a phone rings at the table next to you. A man takes out his phone and starts talking loudly about problems he’s having with his girlfriend. He talks for almost ten minutes! This happens all the time-on buses, in restaurants, everywhere!
Many people find cell phones useful in their daily lives. But we’ve all sat next to someone talking too loudly on a cell phone. You may want to tell the loudmouth to end the conversation, but let the management take care of those noisy customers. You can only control your own behavior. Here are a few rules:
Off means off! Follow the rules of restaurants and other public places. If a sign says “turn off cell phones”, don’t use your phone. If you are allowed, speak softly for a short time and try to move away from other people.
Lights off, phone off! Never make calls in a theater or at the movies.
Pay attention! Talking on a cell phone while driving is dangerous. And watch where you’re going when you’re walking down the streets and talking on the phone.
As more people use cell phones, things are only going to get worse. So, the next time you’re getting ready to make a call, stop and consider the people around you.
1. How many rules are mentioned in the passage to control our behavior?2. What should we do if we’re allowed to use cell phones in public places?
3. Will you use cell phones in public places? Why?

My name is Bob. I am 16 years old now. I’ve felt lonely since I was 9. I didn’t like my classmates, my parents or anyone else. My classmates didn’t want to talk with me and my parents were always saying that other kids were better than me. One day I had a big fight with one of my classmates. I was so angry that I hit him on the face. Just at that moment, a boy stood up and stopped the fight. He was the monitor of our class.
After that, he often helped me and we became good friends. Whenever I got angry or sad, he would help me to cool down. We spent a lot of interesting days together and became best friends. As time goes by, I have become happier with people and things. And it seems that people around me have changed, too.

First, it is important that our neighbors respect our life. If we have a neighbor who tries to know more about our life, how will we feel? He or she may also talk with others about our life. Do you want to live with him or her? The answer is “no”. We will feel sad to have this kind of neighbor and we may want to move as quickly as we can.
Next, a good neighbor is always ready to give us a hand when we need him or her. For example, if we are not at home and someone tries to open our door, our neighbors will see it and call the police. It will help us a lot.
Finally, a good neighbor should protect the environment. He or she never throws rubbish everywhere and should keep the place clean. A good environment can make people comfortable and feel happy all the time.
I think we should learn to be a good neighbor. I also hope everyone will have good neighbors and live a happy life.

It is better to telephone before visiting someone at home. If you receive a written invitation to an event that says “RSVP”, you should reply to let the person who sent the invitation know whether or not you plan to go.
You should never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may refuse by saying “Thank you for inviting me, but I will not be able to come.” If, after accepting, you are unable to go, be sure to tell those who are expecting you as soon as possible that you will not be there. Although it is not expected that you give a gift to the host, it is polite to do so if you are invited for a meal. Common gifts are flowers. Chocolate is another choice as a gift. A thank-you note or a telephone call after the visit is also considered polite to express your thanks for the invitation.

On weekends, I don’t need to get up at half past six, but I have to clean my room and wash my clothes in the morning. Then in the afternoon, I have to go to the club to learn to dance. When I come back, I have to help my mother make dinner. I never have fun. What can I do?

Did you know that tea, the most popular drink in the world (after water), was invented by accident? Many people believe that tea was first drunk about 5,000 years ago. It is said that a Chinese ruler called Shen Nong was the first to discover tea as a drink. One day Shen Nong was boiling drinking water over an open fire. Some leaves from a tea plant fell into the water and remained there for some time. It produced a nice smell so he tasted the brown water. It was quite delicious, and so, one of the world’s favorite drinks was invented.
A few thousand years later, Lu Yu, “the saint of tea”, mentioned Shen Nong in his book Cha Jing. The book describes how tea plants were grown and used to make tea. It also discusses where the finest tea leaves were produced and what kinds of water were used.
It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. In England, tea didn’t appear until around 1660, but in less than 100 years, it had become the national drink. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 19th century. This helped to spread the popularity of tea and the tea plant to more places around the world. Even though many people now know about tea culture, the Chinese are without doubt the ones who best understand the nature of tea.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup had many historical firsts. Held in Qatar from Nov 20 to Dec. 18, it was the first World Cup to be held in the Middle East. It was also the first World Cup to be held in winter in the northern hemisphere (北半球) as well as the first held by a country that has never entered the World Cup finals. It was the last tournament (锦标赛) with 32 teams. The next World Cup in 2026 will have 48 teams playing.
The World Cup saw surprises too. European favorites, Portugal, Spain and Germany bowed out of the game early. But it was Argentina’s year to shine, winning the epic final against the last World Cup winner, France. It won 4—2 in penalties (点球大战) following a 3—3 tie after extra time. The victory stood for the achievement of Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi’s career and the rise of a new generation (一代人) like French player Kylian Mbappe. Online classes at home
Sun Jiayi, a student from Shanghai, has to take online classes at home. Her school is closed due to the novel coronavirus(新冠病毒). “Studying at home is not easy as there are some distraction(使人分心的事物)such as snack foods and the mobile phone. I usually put them away when I am having lessons,” she said.
Shanghai has chosen over 1000 teachers to pre-record online lessons. Wu Wentao is one of them. He is an English teacher. “We teachers are quite used to the physical environment of classrooms, but now we have to adapt to(适应)online teaching. In this situation, I can’t see how students react to my lessons. It seems like I am just talking to a camera, ” he said.
Besides, online teaching possibly needs more preparation time. Zhang Ju, a music teacher, said, “I need to prepare pictures, sounds and videos in advance to present my lessons. Teachers need more time to search and handle multimedia(多媒体)resources.”
Each of these online classes usually lasts for about 20 to 30 minutes. Students have five or six classes a day in order to limit(限制)screen time to about two hours a day.
While taking online classes might be easy for students from cities, it might not be easy for those from less-developed areas. Not all families in the rural areas can afford a computer and Internet connection needed for online lessons every day.
After such a long holiday, most students and teachers can’t wait to return to their classrooms. We just hope that the fight against the novel coronavirus ends soon and that life can go back to normal.
