I spent most of the one and a half year in Canada. My host family are a local family of five.
In the first half year, I felt like a fish out of water. Take food for an example, I had to bring my own lunch to school and my host family made cold sandwiches for me every day. Back in China, I always had warm meals. Another thing was about housing. They offer me a room on the first floor. At night or on weekends when I was ready to do my homework or go to bed, their sons would play with a ball, or jump up and down on the second floor.
After half a year, I couldn’t stand the different living habits anymore. I told my parents I wanted to change to a Chinese host family. However, it was refused by my father, for he thought it was no different from studying in China.
In the end, I chose to stay with that family, and I gradually(渐渐地) I learned to communicate more with them and told them how I felt. Gradually they also started to care for me, a stranger from China coming to study in their country. Sometimes they would prepare Chinese meals for me. When the kids were playing upstairs, the host mother would remind them not to make too much noise. Although there was still noise sometimes, I knew that there was no perfection in life. We need to understand each other.

There was once a man who built his own house. From top to bottom, he built it by himself. After a year, he had a beautiful house of his own. No other house looked like it and many of his neighbors liked it.
But as time went by, his house started to have some problems. One day, a neighbor said, “Friend, it looks like your garden is a bit overgrown.”
The man replied, “Yes, I know. But it’s OK. I’ll cut the grass tomorrow.”
A few days later, a mailman came by with a letter for the man. The mailman said, “Friend, it looks like your windows are a bit dirty.”
The man replied, “Yes, I know. But it’s OK. I’ll wash them tomorrow.”
Weeks passed by. Finally, the man’s brother came over. He looked at the house and couldn’t believe what he saw. The paint on the walls was falling down and the windows were covered with dirt. It seemed the house could fall at any second—all because the man put everything off until “tomorrow”.

There’s a school in Buchen Village, Anhui Province. The only teacher here is a 95-year-old man, Ye Lianping. He began to teach left-behind children (留守儿童) without getting any money in 2000.
Teaching is always an important part of Ye’s life. To help children learn more about the outside world and have their own dreams, he began to offer (提供) students English classes. He first set up a classroom in his own house. Later, the local government (当地政府) gave him another two classrooms, where more children can get education.
Ye lives a very simple life. As he has no children of his own, he lives with his wife in a small house built 30 years ago. Children far away from home can also spend the night there. Over the past years, Ye has helped more than 2,000 children, and Yang Hongyan is one of them. “Without Grandpa Ye’s help, I may have stopped learning.” says Yang.
“It must be a lie to say that I’m not tired. But I think the meaning of life is doing something for others, and that’s the most important thing of life.” says Ye. Today was the weekend and the weather was nice. I drove my son to the suburbs(郊外). My son was in the eighth grade this year. He was usually busy studying and he was very tired. So I wanted him to relax himself in his spare time. We came to the river and enjoyed the beautiful spring. My son also talked with me about the interesting things that happened at school.
Suddenly I heard someone shouting. So my son and I looked around. We saw a middle-aged man running along the bank of the river. He had a long pole(杆) in his hand. A little further away, a child about my son’s age was also running. At first I didn’t know what had happened to them. But I soon saw two little dogs in the river. And the man and the child wanted to save two little dogs. My son and I ran to them to help them. The man pushed one of the dogs up with a pole. After trying several times, he still failed.
But he suddenly took off his coat and jumped into the river. We all cared about the man’s safety. But luckily, the two dogs were soon saved by him. Fathers give us support. They are the shore(岸)we swim to when our arms and legs feel tired. ②They are the strength we rely on (依靠)as we take our first steps into the world. Fathers can be gentle and powerful, but they probably have the simplest love we ever know.
For sons, the father is their first hero and possibly the only man they will ever feel comfortable loving.
For daughters, the father is the first man they admire and the first man whose eyes shine with happiness when they look at them. He is the first man to fall in love with them.
For mothers, the father of our children is the person we can believe in to watch over the babies as closely as we would. We are protectedin the knowledge of their love. A father is the person on the planet with whom we can do whatever we want ... one who will be just as interested and never feel bored in the face of our devotion.

On Feb 25, the short film Bao( 《包宝宝》 ) won this year's Oscar for Best Animated Short (最佳动画短片奖) . The leading character is a small baozi, and it becomes the child of a Chinese woman in the movie.
Domee Shi, Pixar's first woman Chinese-Canadian director (导演), got the idea from her own mother and made the movie.
In the film, many parts show the way the Chinese woman loves her "son". She makes big meals, cleans up the house carefully and always wants to do everything for her son. These parts are true to the strong love or Chinese parents for their children.
But as Bao grows up, he wants to have his own life. He starts to stay with his friends and get home late, so his mom is often angry with him. He'd like to depend on (依靠) himself, but he can't get out of his mother's control (控制). In fact, many children like Bao in China also love their parents, but they have to work far away from their parents when they become adults.
