Imagine the world without bridges. How would people get across rivers? How about visiting someone in another city? Life without bridges would not be easy, as we know. Bridges are an important part of our transportation (交通) ways.
The first bridges were built as a result of a need to make life and travel easier. The first bridges were built in the form of trees falling across small rivers. The wood was strong enough to hold the weight of a person or two at a time.
Later, people made bridges by putting rope (绳子) lines across an open area. In China and other places, rope bridges are still used.
Then, people built arch bridges (拱桥) with large blocks of stones. Arch bridges are among the strongest and longest lasting. Some built more than 1,500 years ago are still used. Even today, people build arch bridges, but usually with wood or other things.
Another kind is the cantilever bridge (悬臂桥). Canada’s Quebec Bridge is one of the world’s longest, about 1,800 feet (549m) across the St. Lawrence River.
A suspension bridge (悬索桥) is over even more space. Probably the most famous suspension bridge is California’s Golden Gate, about 4,200 feet (1,280m) long. When finished in 1937, it was the world’s longest, but in 1964, New York’s Verrazano-Narrows Bridge beat that with about 4,260 feet (1,298m) long. Then in 1981, England’s Humber Bridge beat that with about 4,626 feet (1,410m) long. And since 1998, Japan’s Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge has held the record, about 6,532 feet (1,991m) long.

It's quick and students can do many things with their classmates on the bus. But the buses are often crowded and they don't run very late at night. Now a school in Panzhihua, Sichuan has new buses. They start from February 25th, 2019, and they are just for students. Students can take them after school, even in the late evening.
Parents and students welcome this new kind of buses a lot. Cao Yangrui, a student in Grade Eight, now takes a bus home every day. "There is no bus after 9:00 so we have to walk home after school. Most of us are afraid. So we always go with one or more friends. For me, it takes me 20 minutes or 25 minutes every night," he says. "It's not safe." Now things are different. Every day at school and after school, there are buses going into the schools on time. The buses run over 20 kilometers. Most students can take them home. It's convenient and safe. The koala could not live without a special kind of tree. The tree gives him both his home and his food. For most of the day the koala sleeps in the tree.

No one is glad to hear that his body has to be cut open by a surgeon(外科医生) and part of it is taken out. Today, however, we needn't worry about feeling pain during the operation. The sick person falls into a kind of sleep, and when he awakes, the operation is finished. But these happy conditions are fairly new. It is not many years since a man who had to have an operation felt all its pain.
Long ago, operations had usually to be done while the sick man could feel everything. The sick man had to be held down on a table by force while the doctors did their best for him. He could feel all the pain if his leg or arm was being cut off, and his fearful cries filled the room and the hearts of those who watched.
Soon after 1770, Josept Priestley discovered a gas which is now called "laughing gas". Laughing gas became known in America. Young men and women went to parties to try it. Most of them spent their time laughing, but one man at a party, Horace Wells, noticed that people didn't seem to feel pain when they were using this gas. He decided to make an experiment on himself. He asked a friend to help him.
Wells took some of the gas, and his friend pulled out one of Well's teeth. Wells felt no pain at all. As he didn't know enough about laughing gas, he gave a man less gas than he should have. The man cried out with pain when his tooth was being pulled out.
Wells tried again, but this time he gave too much of the gas, and the man died. Wells never forgot this terrible event.

Wearing armor(盔甲)and holding weapons, they look like ancient soldiers on door posters. But if you look closer—they are actually two cats instead of Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong.
These posters were designed(设计)by Liu Shuning and Lin Chen from Hangzhou, Zhejiang. They wanted to mix modern art and youth culture with traditional culture.
The posters use the style of woodblock New Year paintings, which are a form of intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产)in China. Called “nianhua” in Chinese, this style of art dates back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC—8 AD).
“We think woodblock New Year paintings are treasures—their colors and patterns are beautiful,” Liu said. “We want to show that young people are still interested in traditional culture. Protecting the cultural heritage requires to breathe new life into it. So I tried to add something that young people like. People love little cute animals, so Lin and I keep two cats.”
They used these cats as models. They designed a carpet(地毯)using the traditional “six children pattern”—six children making up a circle and sharing three heads, but the children were replaced with dogs and cats.
Their designs got hundreds of “likes” on the website LOFTER. “Their creative designs will help more young people become interested in traditional culture.” China Daily said. With our already busy lives, finding time to exercise can be impossible. So maybe it would help if there was “a best time” to exercise.
There are clear benefits to exercising in the morning. Many of us have more free time than later in the day, and it may be easier for us to keep a morning plan. A study found that people could sleep better when they exercised in the morning or had the physical activity during the whole day. Exercising on an empty stomach (空腹) before breakfast could also have less fat (脂肪) and keep healthier.
So, good news for early birds, but what if you’re not a morning person? Working out in the afternoon or evening is also good, but different. For example, your body’s ability reaches the highest level in the afternoon, according to a 2010 study. Also, in the afternoon and evening, your mind is the quickest, and your heart rate and blood (血) pressure are lowest, and you aren’t getting hurt (受伤) easily when exercising.
But can this happen? Deciding on if you are a man or a woman? Our bodies are different, after all, so the best time to exercise may be different too. Want to reduce (降低) your blood pressure and you are a woman? Exercise in the morning. Want to improve your heart health and you are a man? Evening is better for you. But, a 2022 study found that it’s both OK for them to exercise at either time of day.
So what time is best? It seems the answer is: whatever time is best for you!

Recently, while "sheltering in place" against Covid-19, I've started reading to my grand kids with Face Time.
Mostly, I read to them because I love doing it. But I also do it for their parents' mental health. Besides having to stay indoors, they have to home school the kids, who can't go to school or to the park or play with their friends.
As am other, I didn't do everything right. Far from it. But when my three children were small, most nights before bed, I would read to them. There is something important-something comforting and healing-about reading to each other. Sometimes the words we read are so powerful that they will never be forgotten. But hearing them read is a different experience.
When we read to ourselves, we see the words with our eyes. But when someone reads to us, we just need to be still and listen. Sometimes, the voice and the love it conveys (传播) mean far more than the words.
Today, I read a tale book my kids loved long ago. Randy, 9 and Wiley, 7, thought it was funny. Elle, who's 5, usually prefers to read to me, but this time she just wanted to talk. Next, Randy played a song for us on his guitar, the very first song he has written. Finally, I Face Timed with Jonah, who is almost a year old. I read a little poem. He liked it so much that he gave me kisses over the phone, then we said goodbye. Now, more than ever, while keeping a safe distance, we all need to hold on to each other.
1. As a grandmother, she started to read to her grand kids without using apps (软件) during the period of "sheltering in place" against Covid-19.2. The author reads to her grandchildren because she loves reading and wants to lower their parents' pressure of taking care of them.
