Typhoons(台风)in the northern part of the world have girls’ names. Sometimes they have very beautiful names. Rose is a pretty name but there was nothing pretty about Typhoon Rose. It was the worst typhoon to hit Hong Kong in more than thirty years.
It began to rain early on the morning of Monday, August 16th, 1971. At ten o’clock in the morning, Typhoon Rose was still 130 miles away but already the wind was blowing people’s umbrellas away. The wind became stronger and stronger. The typhoon shelters(避风港)were soon full of boats. Ships that were too big to go inside the shelters put down more anchors(锚). Some very big ships went out to sea. It is safer for a big ship to be at sea in a typhoon because then it cannot be blown onto rocks. Kai Tak Airport closed. No planes were able to take off or land. At 9:00 in the evening, all lights went out.
No one slept well that night. It is difficult to sleep in such bad weather.
In Typhoon Rose, more than one hundred people died. 229 people were injured(受伤)and 66 of these had to go to hospital. 1,500 people lost their homes. The people of Hong Kong will no quickly forget Typhoon Rose!

It came from the Gobi Desert areas of Mongolia. This year’s wind was very strong there. It is because the temperatures this spring are higher than before. There was also little rain. So the land was dry and it was difficult for plants to hold sand and dust.
China has been working for many years to fight against sandstorms. In the 1970s, China started the Three-North Shelter Forest Program. It planned to plant trees in northern China to stop sandstorms and improve the environment. More than 66 billion trees have been planted so far.
But it also needs the effort of many countries and international cooperation. For example, about 70 percent of the land in Mongolia is facing desertification(沙漠化). Sand in the country has become a source(来源)of sandstorms in China and other countries nearby.
How to protect yourself in sandstorms:
☆Stay in a room with the doors and windows closed.
☆If you’re outside, avoid riding a bike. Cover your face and wear special glasses.
☆Stay away from trees if you are outside.
☆Go to the hospital if you are coughing a lot.
☆Airports, highways, and ports should be closed.

Good afternoon!
Now I want to talk about what to do when an earthquake happens.
If we are in a car:
First, stop as quickly as we can. We should not stop near, or under buildings and trees. They can fall down on our car.
Second, stay in our car and wait until the earthquake is over. The car will protect us from most falling things.
Third, after the earthquake stops, we should move carefully. We’d better not drive on broken roads and bridges.
If we are in a building:
First, try to find a place to stay. It could be under a table or bed. Make sure the place can protect us from falling things.
Second, drop, cover and hold. It means we should get to the floor quickly. Then use our hands and arms to cover our heads and necks. And then hold something to stop us moving.
Third, don’t move until we are sure the earthquake stops. If it stops, we should carefully leave the building. Police and hospital help should be on the way soon.
Thank you all.

Many people think I am lazy, but it’s not true. I sleep so much because I have a strange (奇怪的) diet. As you can see, I only eat eucalyptus (桉树) leaves. Eucalyptus leaves are full of water. I can eat more than 0.5 kg of these leaves each day and I don’t often drink. My name means “no drink” in an Australian language. But there is one big problem: Eucalyptus leaves are not delicious and they are low in calories (卡路里). I get very little energy from them. Think about eating salad all day, you would look as sleepy as I do!
What’s more, the leaves are highly toxic! If other animals eat them, they will die. Luckily, I have a strong digestive system (消化系统). It works very hard to break down the toxins. So tiring! To save energy, I sleep nearly all day long. Now you know why I spend so much time in my tree. Don’t call me lazy any more.

Giving means offering something free to others. Choosing a thoughtful (认真考虑的) gift is one common way of giving during some festivals, but giving is about much more than presents. “Giving isn’t just about physical things; it can be something as simple as giving your time to people,” explains Georgina Bennett from the organization Action for Children. “For example, helping family with jobs around the house or helping an old neighbor cross the street is giving too.”
There are some advantages (优点) of giving. “Giving can increase our happiness(快乐),” explains Bennett. According to some scientists, people giving something to others can get greater happiness than those only treating themselves. Giving, can also help us feel more connected to other people.
“There are lots of things that you can do. They may not cost anything or the cost may be really low (低的),” says Bennett. “For example, you can give your time by playing with younger relatives or helping with the family pet. Writing letters to loved ones and giving away toys and clothes are other ways of giving during some festivals. Even simple things like giving food you no longer need to the food bank can make a difference.”

Building the ISS (国际空间站International Space Station) is the same. The difference is that the workers are astronauts. They walk in space and use robots’ arms and hands to do their work.
In the space station, astronauts are comfortable. The temperature there is about 21℃. But outside of the station, it can be too hot or cold for people. In the sunlight, it’s about 120℃. In the shadow of the station, it’s about -85℃. So when astronauts walk in space, they have to wear heavy clothes—spacesuits.
These suits also keep astronauts safe from flying rubbish in space. Each time people go into space, they leave rubbish there. So astronauts should be careful because there’s a lot of rubbish, and some rubbish goes many times as fast as a plane!
Space walking is not easy, and it can be dangerous. So getting ready for it takes a lot of time to learn. Astronauts will need to do 160 space walks to finish their work in the ISS. That will take about 1900 man-hour (工时(每人每小时的工作量) ) of work.
