Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to make money for my schooling.
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (缝被子). I silently sat beside her.
“Mum, is there love between you and Dad?” I asked in a very low voice.
With surprise in her eyes, she stopped her work for a while. Then she said, “Susan, look at this thread. It can hardly be seen, but it’s really there. It makes the quilt strong. If life is a quilt, love should be a thread. Love is inside.”
I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month.
After they were back. My mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road every day. They were so kind to each other and it seemed they were the happiest couple.
After two months my father still couldn’t walk by himself.
“Dad, how are you feeling now? I asked him one day.
“Susan, don’t worry about me,” he said. “I just like walking with your mum. I like this kind of life.” Reading his eyes, I knew he loves my mother deeply.
Now I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

My father has just retired after 27 years as a manager for IBM. His job filled his day, his thoughts and his life. When he woke up and took a warm shower, I screamed under a freezing waterfall in Peru. When he tied a tie and put on the same Swiss watch, I rowed a boat across Lake of the Ozarks.
My father sees me drifting aimlessly, nothing to show for my 33 years but a passport full of funny stamps. He wants me to settle down, but now I want him to find an adventure.
He agrees to travel with me through the national parks. We meet four weeks later in Rapid City.
“What is our first stop?” asks my father.
“What time is it?”
“Still don’t have a watch?”
Less than an hour away is Mount Rushmore. As he stares up at the four Presidents carved in granite (花岗岩), his mouth and eyes open slowly, like those of a little boy.
“Unbelievable,” he says, “How was this done?”
A film in the information center shows sculptor Gutzon Borglum devoted 14 years to the sculpture(雕像) and then left the final touches to his son.
We stare up and I ask myself, “Would I ever devote my life to anything?”
No directions, no goals. I used to hear those words in my father’s voice. Now I hear them in my own.
The next day we’re at Yellowstone National Park, where we have a picnic.
“Have you ever travelled with your dad?” I ask.
“Only once,” he says. “I never spoke much with my father. We loved each other—but never said it. Whatever he could give me, he gave.”
The last sentence—it’s probably the same thing I’d say about my father. And what I’d want my child to say about me.
In Glacier National Park, my father says, “I’ve never seen water so blue.” I have, in several places of the world. I can keep traveling and I realize—maybe a regular job won’t be as dull as I feared.
Weeks after our trip, I call my father.
“The photos from the trip are wonderful,” he says. “We have got to take another trip like that sometime.”
I tell him I’ve decided to settle down, and I’m wearing a watch.

It was a transitional (过波的) time in Daniel’s life, a passage from college into the adult world. I wanted to leave him some words that would have some meaning, some importance beyond the moment. But nothing came from my lips. No sound broke the silence of my beachside home. I stood frozen and quiet, looking into the searching eyes of my son, which I knew was not the first time I had let such a moment pass.
When Daniel was five. I took him to the school bus stop on his first day of kindergarten. I felt the fear in my hand holding mine as the bus turned the corner. I saw his hot cheeks as the bus pulled up. He looked at me as he did now. “What is it going to be like, Dad? Can I do it? Will I be OK?” Then he walked up the bus steps and disappeared inside. The bus drove away, and I said nothing.
Ten years later, a similar scene played itself out. I drove him to college in Virginia. As I started to make the trip home, I tried to think of something to say to give him courage and confidence as he started this new period of life. I left, only mumbling, “Hope you feel better Dan.”
I once told Daniel about my great regret that I didn’t take a year off to travel. Daniel thought about this. After graduation, he worked as a waiter, a bike messenger, and a painter. Now he had enough money for Paris. The night before he left, I tossed and turned in bed. I was trying to figure out something to say. Nothing came. Maybe it wasn’t necessary to say anything.
How many times have we let such moments pass? What does it matter over the course of a lifetime if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him?

There were many old city walls in Xi’an in the past. But now there are only a few left. They are more than 700 years old. People pulled down lots of the walls in the 1960s. People thought them useless (无用的) and they made the traffic heavy and the streets crowded. Some of them were even dangerous. Today, the government is rebuilding some of the old city walls, because they have a lot of value (价值).
Second, I’m visiting Qin Shihuang’s Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses (秦始皇兵马俑). It’s very famous in China. And I will take the camera with me. I’m taking photos there.
I think my trip will be very interesting and I can’t wait for it.

“Welcome to China!” This simple greeting from volunteer Sun Zeyu warmed the heart of a US snowboarder (单板滑雪运动员) Tessa Maud at the Olympics opening ceremony (开幕式).
“That guy who had said ‘Welcome to China’ really just makes me tear up every time because they [volunteers] are so nice. We feel so welcomed, “said Maud in the video she shared on Tik Tok.
Sun, a junior student from Tsinghua University, is an example of how Generation Z (people born between 1995 and 2010) promoted cultural and people-to-people exchanges at the Beijing Winter Games. Active and open-minded, they bridge gaps in their own ways. Their pleasant personalities, global vision and new-age thinking made the Games even more fantastic.
Gen Z athletes shared their Chinese travels on social media. Some became big fans of Chinese food. Maud shared what she ate every day on Tik Tok-fried rice, Kung Pao chicken and Peking duck. What to eat each day was a hard choice for her. “Everything is so good,” she said.
Jenise Spiteri is a snowboarder from Malta. She became known as the “red bean bun girl” in China after she took a big bite while waiting for her score. “Goodbye to the amazing workers who served our food every day,” she wrote on social media when she left the Olympic Village. Gen Z volunteers served the event with heart and soul. Alexandra Pozhidaeva, 23, from Russia, had a heart-warming moment with her Chinese peers. When the stadium (体育馆) was very cold, they lent her their gloves. She said it was touching as they didn’t know each other.
Another volunteer, Yang Jinhe, 18, started to work on COVID-related matters in mid-December. He will also work at the Paralympic Games. Back in 2008, he was impressed by the song You and Me. I lately gave my adult class homework, which was to “go to someone you love and tell them you love them. It has to be someone you have never said those words to before or haven’t shared those words with for a long time”.
That doesn’t sound like a difficult task, but most of the men in that group were over 35 and were taught that expressing emotions is not “macho (男子汉的)”.
At the beginning of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to share what happened when they told someone they loved them. One of the men raised his hand. He appeared quite moved and a bit shaken.
He began by saying, “I didn’t feel that I had anyone to say those words to. But as I began driving home, I knew exactly who I needed to say ‘I love you’ to. Five years ago, my father and I had a quarrel (吵架) and never solved it. We hardly spoke to each other.”
“The next morning, I called my dad. When he answered the phone, I said, ‘Dad, can I come over tonight? I have something to tell you.’ I told him it wouldn’t take long, so he finally agreed.”
“At 5:30, I was at my parents’ house ringing the doorbell. As luck would have it, Dad answered the door.”
“I took one step in the door and said, ‘Dad, I just came over to tell you that I love you.’”
“His face softened, his wrinkles (皱纹) disappeared and he began to cry. He reached out and hugged me and said, ‘I love you too, son, but I’ve never been able to say it.’”
“Dad and I hugged for a moment longer. I hadn’t felt that great in a long time.”
“Two days after that visit, my dad had a heart attack and ended up unconscious (昏迷) in the hospital. I don’t know if he’ll make it.”
“My message to all of you is this: Don’t wait to do the things that need to be done. Take the time to do what you need to do and do it now!”
