Like many other young boys, I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I was a middle school student. My mother advised me to be a teacher like her, but it seemed that was not interested in it. My father wanted me to be a pianist. However, I couldn’t stand spending all of my time in front of a piano.
I got my goal(目标)after I went to high school. I got a part-time job at the school radio station and I found it was interesting. I loved to discuss school life and my favorite music with my schoolmates on the radio. I kept doing this job during the next six years. When I left the university, I got full-time- job at our local(当地的)radio station. My career(事业)began. My program is successful and I have a lot of fans. I enjoy my job and my life now.

BusyKid that is an app did a study. The study showed American parents are being unfair. Parents pay boys more than girls for chores. They pay boys two times as much as girls.
Similar studies have been done. They look at how much adult men make. Then they compare it to women. The studies show men make more money than women. Men make more even for the same job. Work pay has been changing a little.
BusyKid tracked 10,000 American families. The study showed boys made $13.80 each week. Girls made $6.71. Boys are getting a lot more money. They are earning more than double.
Gregg Murset runs BusyKid. And he is also a father of boys and girls. He hopes the study might make parents change. They should pay girls the same as boys. Mr. Murset does not think parents mean to pay boys more. He thinks they just pay based on old ideas about work. They pay based on what they have come to know.
The study shows why boys made more money. Parents gave boys work they think is harder. Boys work outside more. Boys cut the grass. They cut bushes. Girls did more work inside the house. Girls cleaned dishes. They cleaned floors. Parents think this work is easier. They did not give them as much money.
Barbara Risman is a college teacher. She teaches about differences between men and women. She said people are changing how they think about boys and girls. The change is just very slow. Risman said people must talk more about unfair pay. Many people do not know they pay children differently. Without seeing this, they cannot change. They will keep paying boys and girls unfairly.

Whenever I tell people that I teach English at the Berlin(柏林) Zoo, I almost always get a questioning look because of my job. Behind it, the person is trying to find out who exactly I teach ... the animals?
Since June 2017, right before the arrival of the two new giant pandas, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, I have been helping the panda keepers at the zoo to feel more comfortable and confident speaking English. And why do they need English? Who do they speak English with?
Not the pandas, even though the language that is used for the medical training instructions is actually English. They talk to the crowd of international visitors and to visiting Chinese zookeepers who often come to check on the pandas, which are on loan (租借) from China. As you know, English is widely spoken in the world while German isn’t. They also need to be ready to give interviews in English with international reporters. This is why they need an English trainer.
So what are they learning? Basically, how to describe a panda’s life. And here’s what I’ve learned from them so far:
Note 1: Pandas eat bamboo, lots of bamboo! They can eat up to 30 kilograms a day, and when they’re not eating, they’re sleeping. Note 2: The two of them live in separate enclosures at the zoo because that is how they live in nature. Note 3: Giant pandas come from the cool, foggy mountains of south-western China. Note 4: They are endangered, with fewer than 2,000 of them living in the wild today. |
It’s been an honor to watch the panda program develop and to see the pandas get used to their new home. As a little girl, I wanted to be a zookeeper when I grew up. Now, I’m living out that dream indirectly by helping the panda keepers do their job in English.

That’s because he has helped them to build more than sixty schools, most for girls. But what first brought a white American man to this remote part of the world where tourists rarely go?
Greg Mortenson was born is the United States, but grew up in Africa. His hobby was mountain climbing. When his younger sister died suddenly, he decided to climb Pakistan’s K2 in memory of her. K2 is the second highest mountain in the world. He didn’t reach the top of K2 and after seventy-eight days at high altitude (海拔), he was very tired. On his way back he got lost and finally, unable to walk properly, he sturnbled into the tiny village of Korphe.
The villagers looked after him and nursed him back to health. He soon realized how poor these people were. So, he promised to return and build a school for them.
Back in America he started a program called Pennies for Pakistan. School children asked their friends and families to donate pennies and the pennies became dollars. After three years of money-raising (筹款), he went back to Korphe.
The villagers were amazed when he kept his promise and built Kprphe School for Girls. Most of the girls who go to the school will be the first literate women in their families. Their mothers never had the chance to learn to read and write. Greg Mortenson likes to use an African proverb: “If you educate a boy, you educate an individual.
