I am Jim Hawkins and my story begins many years ago, when my father worked at the Admiral Benbow inn.
One day a tall man with a scar (疤痕) on his face arrived. He opened the door of the inn, singing the song I know so well:
“Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest-Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!”
“A glass of rum,” he said when he came inside.
“This is a pleasant inn,” he said, “Do you have many customers (顾客)?”
“Not many,” my father answered.
“Well, this is the place for me. You can call me ‘captain’.” he said. The he asked a man to carry his large sailor’s chest to his room. “I’m a simple man,” he told my father, “Rum and bacon and eggs is all I want. Here are four gold coins to start. Tell me when I have to pay more.”
During the day he went to the cliffs with his telescope (望远镜) and in the evening he sat by the fire drinking rum and water. He asked about sailors every day. We soon understood that he wanted to avoid them. When a sailor visited the inn, the captain was always very quiet. One day he asked me:
“If you see a sailor with one leg, tell me as soon as he arrives.”
When the captain drank too much rum, he sang sea-songs and told the other customers terrible stories about his violent life at sea.
He stayed month after month, but he didn’t give my father any more money. My poor father was too frightened to ask. Everyone was frightened of the captain and his stories. The only person who was not afraid of him was the local doctor and magistrate, Dr. Livesey.
“If you keep drinking rum like that, you will very soon be dead,” he warned the captain.

It tasted like nothing he had tried in England. Before he returned to England, he did his best to find out what the ingredients (原料) were. They included red onions, garlic (蒜), vinegar (醋) and salted fish.
Once home, he met with two chemists who owned a shop close to his home.
He gave them the list of the ingredients and asked them to make the sauce for him. The two chemists, John Wheeley Lea and William Henry Perrins found all the ingredients and mixed them together. They tasted it and described the sauce as terrible! It was poured into a barrel (桶). Mr. Lee and Mr. Perrins waited for Marcus to come and get the barrel, but he never did.
A couple of years later, the two chemists remembered the barrel. They decided to see what the mixture tasted like. They couldn’t believe it! It was delicious! They decided to sell it in their shop. They called their sauce Lea & Perrins.
It takes time to produce such a delicious product. The process begins with keeping red onions and garlic in vinegar for at least 18 months. During that time, the two vegetables soften. Fish called anchovies from Spain are placed in salt for a similar period of time. When ready, the red onions, garlic and anchovies are mixed together in a barrel. The mixture is kept there for six more weeks. In the end, it’s heated to kill bacteria (细菌).
Lea & Perrins can be found in most home kitchens and restaurants. It’s sold in over 130 countries worldwide now.

I grew up extremely shy and spent most of my time avoiding people looking at me. As for public speaking, it was always something that gave me high amounts of stress when I was in primary school. I didn’t have any friends and felt lonely, having no one to talk to.
After I became a junior high schooler. I decided that I was going to change that. At the end of a Monday, a poster of the school debate team caught my attention. I took a deep breath and walked the long hallway to the debate coach’s room, alone. Although I was scared to death, I introduced myself to the coach. Mrs. Brown. I was met with a warm smile and understanding of my fears. Little did I know, I was beginning one of the most important journeys of my life.
In the debate team, I met students from other classes. After several training classes, we became friends. It was the first time I made some friends. When the debates began, I didn’t want to lose friends I cared about, so I oflen pretended(假装)to agree with them or I just said “let’s agree to disagree”.
In another round, I only brought up some soft anguments. Mrs. Brown noticed this and she told me, “Alice, true friends have heated debates with each other and still remain friends after that. If a friendslip depends on winning or losing a debate about any subject, it isn’t much of a real friendship.” Then I started trying my best to prepare for all debates with my partners, coming up with arguments, and facing off against the opponents(对手). Surprisingly, it brought us closer and helped me form a connection not only with my partners but also with my opponents.
Six years later, I can say that my strongest friendships started from arguing with strangers. They stood by me when I was going through hard times, and those moments shaped me into the person I am today.
