English is difficult to learn because it is so different from our mother tongue (母语). On the other hand, we haven’t got enough chances (机会) to hear English and speak English to foreigners (外国人).
So the first important thing for us to do, I think, is to practice (练习) speaking English more both in and out of class. In class, I listen to the teacher carefully and try my best to answer the teacher’s questions. After class, I listen to the tapes of the texts again and again until I can understand every word of it. I often retell (复述) the text in my own words. I always work hard at English and never give it up (放弃).
Of course this is not enough. In the evening, I do my homework carefully. When I find something interesting, I will write it down in English. At first, I couldn’t write well, but with the help of my teacher, I have made great progress.

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not true, because everyone could be a better student if they want to. Here are my suggestions.
When planning your week, you should make a list of the things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make your own timetable. First, arrange your time for eating, sleeping, getting dressed and so on. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget the entertainment time. A weekly plan may not solve all your problems, but it will make you realize what is happening.
Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios or TV sets! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
It is the most important thing during your study. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. Listen carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher has mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss next day, preview (预习) the material. This will help you understand the next class better. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you can remember it longer.
The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. It helps you remember your new language. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over-worried.
There are many other ways that might help you with your study. You will probably discover many others after you try these.
A.Study regularly. |
B.Plan your time carefully. |
C.Study casually. |
D.Make good use of your time in class. |
E.Find a good place to study. |
F.Develop a good attitude towards tests. |
First, a dictionary will tell you the spelling of a world. If you are not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in alphabetical order—a,b,c and so on. For example, on a dictionary page the word “poor”—p,o,o,r – comes before “poverty”—p,o,v,e,r,t,y—and the word “poverty” comes before “ power”—p,o,w,e,r. The words are always given in an alphabetical order.
The second thing, a dictionary will tell you pronunciation. Most give phonetic, or sound, alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell you how a word is pronounced. There are a few different phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International Phonetic Alphabet to show pronunciation.
The third thing, a dictionary will tell you the meaning of words. You can look up a word and find out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary will tell you all of the word’s meaning. For example, in English the common word “get” has over 20 different meanings.

A hen raised her head and said, “Mr. Mouse, this mousetrap is only for you. I won’t be worried about it.” The mouse turned to a pig, “I am sorry, Mr. Mouse, but the mousetrap has nothing to do with me, either!” the pig said. Then the mouse turned to a cow, “It sounds like you have a problem, not me.” the cow said. The mouse came back to the house with head down and it was very sad because no one would help.
That night the farmer’s wife heard a loud sound and she rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness she could not see that it was a snake. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The wife caught a bad fever and the farmer thought the best way to treat a fever was chicken soup. So the farmer killed the hen for the soup. The wife got worse and her friends came to visit her. The farmer had to kill the pig to feed them. But the wife didn’t get better and died. Her friends came and the farmer had to kill the cow to feed all of them.
So remember when any one of us is in trouble, we may all be in trouble.

Great changes have taken place in your city these years. It’s really good news that you can travel by high speed rail in Weihai, though there’s only one line there. Here in London, we have so many lines. By the way, we don’t use the word "subway" here. It’s American English. We call it "the underground" instead.
The London underground is very famous. It’s famous for several reasons. First of all, part of the underground railway today is the oldest in the world, which opened in 1863. Secondly, the London underground is also the first line to have electric trains, in 1890. Thirdly, the London underground is the second largest metro system in the world, after the Shanghai Metro. There are 270 stations in the underground and it has 402 kilometers of tracks. What’s more, the city of London itself helps make the transportation system famous! I’ve got a few photos to help you build a clear picture of the underground in my city. They’re together with this mail.
In your e-mail, you also said workers were building more lines. I’m sure your city is developing fast. Maybe you can send me a few photos of your city today. I really want to see the changes taking place there. I’m happy for you to live there in a modern city with such a new look!
So much for now. I’ll write soon again. Best wishes.
