We live on a farm in Alaska. There are many wild animals in the quiet countryside there. One winter night, when walking outside with my son, Joe, I heard a cry.
A young fox was hurt. Every time she wanted to stand up, she fell back to the ground. We took her home, and on the way home we named her Vicky.
After a few days, Vicky began to eat and looked better. We let her play in the house. Vicky stood, lost her balance and fell, and tried again. “Oh, Mom,” Joe said, “She’s so brave, and keeps trying.” After a few more tries, Vicky could stand, and later moved freely in the house.
One day I saw her walk to the door and take a breath(呼吸)of the outside air. I knew she wanted to go back to the wild. So we drove her to the forest.
“ Vicky ”, I said, stopping my car for a goodbye, “look after yourself.” She barked (叫)at me, the only time I heard her bark. Then she ran into the forest.

Andy just moved to a big city to start a new job. He had never lived in a big city before. It didn’t take long for the stress(压力)of city life to get to Andy. The people, the noise, his heavy work…it all weighed on him until he felt like giving up. He found no joy in anything—life just hurt.
But one day, on his way to work, Andy saw a homeless man on the street. He had never seen a homeless person before. He stopped and had a short chat with him. All of a sudden, he opened up about his life and complained about the problems he was facing. The man patiently listened the whole time. Then Andy asked him a question.
“I hope I won’t offend you, but I was wondering…how did you end up homeless?” Andy asked.

When my mom and I walked to the restaurant from our car, a girl about my age and her mother came up to us.
My mom said she had something to do, and after giving them a few dollars, we said goodbye.
About one hour later, my mom came. She said she went home and brought some food and clothes to the girl.
Until now, I still remember that night. On that night, my mom taught me one of the best lessons I ever learned.
A.They asked if we had any spare change (多余的零钱). |
B.It was a cold day, and the wind was blowing strongly. |
C.And I had my bedroom but she had to stay in an old car with 5 other people. |
D.I asked her why she helped those people. |
E.Then, my dad and I went to the restaurant. |
After a whole week of rain, we finally had a comfortable and beautiful summer day outside. My family and I were driving to a nearby town when my daughter found a yard sale (庭院拍卖). We saw old toys and a couple of guitars. We saw huge piles of clothes and even a piece of furniture or two for sale. Best of all, we saw lots of smiling people talking, laughing, sitting and standing in the sunshine.
Seeing all of this brought back memories of my childhood. Most of my clothes back then came from yard sales. My mom was a good yard sale shopper. I used to hate going there until one special day when I saw that they also sold old books there. After that, I always browsed (翻阅) the books until it was time to go and sometimes my mom would buy me one too. Soon a large part of my home library came from yard sale books. To me, they were more priceless than new ones.
Why do we have yard sales? We drop our old things and we buy “new” old things. But it certainly isn’t for the money. ▲ . We talk and catch up with old friends and new neighbors. We connect with kindness and our love for all the old stuff (物品).
I think yard sales teach us something about life too. We can’t really own anything here, after all. All we get is to have the stuff for a period of time. Then it is time to let it go and pass it on.
