Why does the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.

Most people know this joke. But recently, some people have been much more worried about how the grizzly bears(灰熊)and mountain lions can cross the road.

“Millions of animals die each year on US roads,” the Federal Highway Administration reports. In fact, only about 80 ocelots(豹猫)exist in the US today. The main reason? Road kill.

“Eco-passages(生态通道)” may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. They are paths(道路)both over and under roads. “These Eco-passages can be extremely useful, so that wildlife can avoid road accidents,” said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Protection Society.

But do animals actually use the Eco-passages? The answer is yes. Paul Beyer of Northern Arizona University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an Eco-passage that went under a highway. This showed that the lions used the passage.

Builders of Eco-passages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees on and around them. Animals seem to be catching on. Animals like grizzly bears are using the bridges and underpasses.

The next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around. You might see an animal overpass!

1. What does the example of “ocelots” show in the passage?
A.Wild animals become more dangerous.
B.The driving conditions improved greatly.
C.Many animals are killed in road accidents.
D.The measure for protecting wildlife fails to work.
2. How many kinds of animals are mentioned in the passage?
A.Two.B.Three.C.Four.D.Five.
3. What can we know about an “Eco-passage”?
A.An underground path for cars.B.A path for animals to cross the road.
C.A room built for the safety of the area.D.A bridge for animals to get over a river.
4. What does the writer mean by saying “Animals seem to be catching on”?
A.Animals are increasing in number.
B.Animals are crossing the road in groups.
C.Animals begin to learn to use Eco-passages.
D.Animals begin to realize the dangers on the road.
5. What is the best title for the passage?
A.No killing animals.B.Animals are endangered.
C.Cross the river safely.D.Special bridges for animals.

Shut up zoos, Not animals!

Many people believe that it is fun to visit zoos, but maybe they are wrong because zoos are just jails(监狱) for animals. The difference is that criminals get out after a certain period of time while animals cannot. Animals in cages are boring to look at. Everyone knows what a tiger looks like, and we’ve seen them on TV. So why make animals suffer (使痛苦) by shutting them up for people's fun? Shut the zoos instead!

* I partly agree. But some zoos aren't for our fun. I have just come back from a zoo in Chengdu, it saves pandas and breeds them because pandas are rare (稀有的) animal. So, I don’t think all the zoos are the same.

*Totally agree! Each time I go to visit the zoo, I never look at the poor animals’ eyes because they look so sad and lonely, living in the small and dirty cages. I hope they will all come back to nature in the near future, so they can live happily and freely with their families.

*In my opinion, I think zoos are amazing places for kids. They can play with animals and have fun there. At the same time, they can learn a lot about animals. Why shut up?

Bananas Might Go Away

It's hard to turn down a tasty banana. They taste good and you don't have to wash them before eating them. However, British scientists say that the fruit may disappear by 2050.

1    Scientists at the University of Exeter collected data from 27 countries and regions that produce 86 percent of the world’s bananas. They found that climate change has improved growing conditions in 21 of these countries. In the past 60 years, the average output has reached 1.37 tons of bananas per hectare.

2     Ten of the countries, including India, the world’s biggest producer of bananas, will produce fewer bananas. The higher the temperature is, the fewer bananas will be produced. By 2050, the fruit may die out.

3     In fact, the perfect temperature range for growing bananas is between 24 and 32℃. If temperatures get too high, they will stop growing.

4       Unlike other crops, the bananas we grow come from shoot cuttings rather than seeds. This means that all banana plants have the same genotype (基因型). In other words, if a disease is able to kill one plant, it could kill them all.

5     Caused by fungus(真菌)in the soil, it spreads easily. It has spread across South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. If one banana farm suffers from the disease, it will take 30 years until it is able to grow bananas again. Scientists have yet to find a cure for this disease.

A.Diseases are another danger to bananas.
B.One reason for this is climate change.
C.One serious disease is called Panama.
D.Bananas only grow well in proper temperatures.
E.Shouldn’t bananas grow more easily if it’s hotter outside?
F.However, if temperature keeps rising, this advantage will disappear.
