9.0 magnitude earthquake (九级地震) hit Japan on March 11, 2011
—www.bbc.com

I’m Adam. It was quite scary even in Tokyo. Most people at our office stayed under their desks. After the earthquake, we moved to the park in Shinjuku. It was filled with people. Some schoolgirls were crying. Some people were wearing helmets(头盔), which they probably took with them when they left the buildings.

The network went down and it took about two hours before I could e-mail my parents and my wife in England to tell them I was OK. I’ve lived in Tokyo since July last year, but even the Japanese people are saying this is the biggest earthquake they have ever experienced.

【推荐1】Welcome toWeather On The Go. We are going to find out what causes bushfires in Australia and how they influence local communities.

A bushfire is a large fire in the scrub(灌木) or forest that can quickly get out of control.    1

The hot, dry weather and some plants make Australia become the areas that most easily catch fire in the world.    2

However, in northern Australia, it’s during winter and spring.

Fire is a natural part of the Australian scene. Some plants like the Banksia bush actually get some help from bushfires because a bushfire helps their seed pods(种子荚) open so that new baby Banksia can grow.    3    Black Saturday is the name given to the day of the worst bushfire in modern Australian history. And the latest Australian bushfires in 2019 also shocked the whole world, which killed at least 33 people and more than 10 billion animals.

To warn people when bushfire conditions are bad, Government of Australia has the bushfire danger rating(评级) system.    4    If you live or travel in an area that’s at risk of bushfires, make sure you have a fire self-protection plan and discuss it with your family before the start of the fire season.    5    You can also get more information on what to do in a fire from your state fire station website.

B.Bushfires are often called “wild fires” in other parts of the world.
C.The bushfire season in southern Australia is during autumn and summer.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了闪电的形成,危害及躲避方法。

【推荐2】Lightning (闪电) is shocking, and it happens all over the world! Scientists think that there are more than three million lightning strikes (袭击) every day in the world—that’s thirty strikes every second.

Lightning can also be very dangerous. Every year, lightning kills people because it can start big fires or because it reaches temperatures up to 28,000 degrees centigrade. American Roy Sullivan, who worked in a park, holds the record for surviving the most lightning strikes. Between 1942 and 1983, he was hit seven times!

So, why does lightning strike? Lightning strikes happen when ice and water in clouds rub (摩擦) together, and cause atmospheric (大气层的) changes. When this happens, it creates a static charge (静电电荷). Lightning can strike inside the cloud, between two clouds and between a cloud and Earth. It’s the last type of strike that is the most dangerous for humans. About 1,000 people get struck by lightning every year in the United States, and about 100 of them die as a result.

Lightning is certainly not something to toy with. When lightning strikes, it’s best to stay inside a large building. To stay safe, do not stand under trees, on hills or near water. Trees attract lightning. Also, do not lie down on the ground, otherwise the electricity may go through you and cause a heart disease.

Floodwaters may not look all that dangerous on TV, especially if you’re a skilled swimmer. But flash floods, like what recently happened in Sichuan, are actually very dangerous. They can happen with almost no warning.     1

Prevention is always your best chance of living through a flash flood. Flash floods can happen without clear signs like clouds and heavy rain.     2     As soon as you receive words of a flash flood, head for higher ground at once.

If you see floodwaters, avoid all moving water, even if it seems to be very shallow.     3     You could hit your head, break a bone, or worse, get swept away into much deeper, faster-moving water. Any place where the water is above your foot is dangerous.

If you have no choice but to walk through water, go where the water is shallow and isn’t moving. If necessary use a stick to check the depth as you walk. As you make your way to higher ground, avoid touching or getting near electrical equipment.     4     And if flood waters have reached your home, do not use your home’s power.

If you get swept away by floodwaters, catch or climb onto something as soon as you are able.     5     It’s hard for rescue teams to find people stuck in the water, so anything you can do to make yourself more noticeable is a big help. Don’t give up keep shouting and waving until you’re rescued.

A.So be sure to check the local weather report.
B.Shout loudly for help and wave an arm if possible.
C.Just six inches of moving water can knock you over.
D.That is because you’re probably wet or standing in water.
E.Here is what you should do to save yourself in a flash flood.
